Pierre-Samuel DUPONT DE NEMOURS. Konrad Engelbert OELSNER. Notice sur la vie et les écrits de M. Joël Barlow, Ministre Plénipotentiaire des États-Unis d'Amérique auprès de S.M. l'Empereur des Français. 1813, imprimerie de Smith. 1 vol. in-4 (25,1 x 20,3 cm) relié de 31 pages. Reliure demi basane, dos lisse orné de filets, et du titre, frappés à l'or fin. Premier plat taché, dos avec frottements, intérieur frais. Rare édition originale, exemplaire avec un envoi autographe signé de Joël Barlow, et quelques légères corrections et annotations en marge, de ce dernier. Joel Barlow, né le 24 mars 1754 à Redding dans le Connecticut et mort le 26 décembre 1812 en Pologne, est un poète et diplomate américain. Il prend part à la guerre d'indépendance où il est aumônier de régiment et compose des chants nationaux. Puis Il devient à la fois ministre presbytérien, avocat et agent de la compagnie de l'Ohio. À Paris, il se lie d'amitié avec les Girondins, spécule sur les assignats, occupe le poste de consul à Alger et à Tripoli et ne retourne aux États-Unis qu'en 1805. Nommé ministre plénipotentiaire à Paris en 1811, il meurt en Pologne où il s'était rendu pour négocier avec Napoléon Ier. Il s'est fait un nom en littérature avec un poème en 10 chants, la Colombiade, 1781 (réimprimé avec luxe en 1807 à Philadelphie). Source : wikipédia. Assez bon

Si trattava del terzo ufficiale di una nave da carico polacca, il quale, non volendo tornare nella propria patria, era riuscito, durante il viaggio, a farsi scivolare nell'acqua, a cavallo di quella botte, fiducioso nel proprio destino.
