A very good copy only scattered foxing.</p><p>First Dutch translation. In 1609 king Philip III ordered the expulsion of the Spanish <em>Moriscos</em> Spanish Muslim´s converted into Christianity. The order was based on a multiplicity of factors: despite the conversion into Christianity the Moriscos were still an un-integrated social group of over 350000 people their religious practices were still alive although in secret overall they never assimilated into the Spanish communities; the moors from the kingdom of Valencia still kept their language; the repeated incursions from pirates of the Berberia; the fear of a possible collaboration between the Moors and the Ottoman Empire not only of an invasion but their security in the Mediterranean; furthermore this would mean the culmination of the homogenizer process began with the expulsion of the Jewish. The adoption of the order was gradual and not simultaneous first executed in Valencia then Andalucia and so forth. The measure would ultimately collaborate to the decline of the Spanish empire as the 12 Year's Truce turned their military contest with Spain into an economic one.</p><p>This is Van Linschoten's translation of the proclamation; it gives reasons for the decision and provides the Duke of Lerma free reign to carry out the expulsion by whatever means they see fit confiscate lands and goods and to set an example for all sympathetic to the Moors. </p><p>Tiele Pamfletten 790.</p>

Right upper edge a bit rough small split to one crease repaired with acid-free document repair tape small light stain to portion of first two lines but a fine example. As with all other Spanish royal signatures Philip has signed "Yo el Rey" I the King. With the words "El Rey" at the top this document grants permission to the town of Canical to withhold 20000 Maravedis coin of the time from the sum it owes in taxes in order to settle a municipal debt. Includes 18 lines in brown ink in a miniscule script. Next to the King's signature is a mounted printed paper woodcut seal with the emblem of the College of Notaries of Madrid. Countersigned in a bold dark script Jorge de Tovar. At the bottom are three lines by officials of the town of Canical acknowledging the permission granted. Philip III was King of Spain and King of Portugal from 1598 until his death. He inherited essentially a bankrupt nation with a disastrous economy. His father Philip II had drained Spain's resources with her wealth based on the silver mines of Latin America. Spain's internal economy was weak with little industry and a backward agriculture and large estates worked by peasants ruined by excessive taxation. Medina 5738 Fray Bernabe a Franciscan from the province of Buenos Aires and the cura of the reduction of San Fernando del Chacofrom Buenos Aires has appealed to the King on his own behalf and that of all regular clergy in the Americas serving as parish priest to the Indians. Stipends destined for these individuals have not been passed on to them by their Superiors and Provincials with the result that many such priests subsist in great material want; not only that but their Superiors are continually removing them from this post to that with the result that their parishioners are being harmed spiritually. The King orders these practices stopped. The Cedula is dated 5 August 1773 and this is a certified copy with holograph signature and rubric of Melchor de Peramas. Peramas was an important oficial being secretary to the Viceroy and served under Bucareli and Galvez. Fine. <br/><br/> NP unknown

Por quanto somos ynformado que no embargante lo que por leyes y pregmaticas cedulas y provisiones nuestras esta proveydo para que no se pueda sacar ni saque dinero oro ni plata destos reynos y de las penas en las otras leyes pregmaticas cartas y provisiones puestas contra los que los sacaren y llevasen en qualquier manera y lo que sobre esto esta proveydo y ordenado a los alcaldes … y justicias ordinarios destos reynos assi de los puertos de mar como de Tierra y la orden y recaudo que sobre esto se ha tenido y tiene todavÃa. Se ha sacado y saca cada dia gran suma y cantidad de nuestro Dinero oro y plata y especialmente al tiempo que las mas Armadas leales delas Indias. en los otros lugares y puertos de mar y tierra destos reynos para que … y cumpla fechado en S. A few foxing spots and short tears caused through oxidation of the ink else fine.</p><p>An interesting and rare manuscript of economic nature from Phillip II of Spain; ordering and stressing the prohibition of removing gold and silver from the colonies unless expressly allowed. These "cedulas" or edicts were sent to the different posts of administration of the Americas and Philippines for information purposes. Phillip II 1527 – 1598 had one of the vastest kingdoms known under his rule 1556 – 1598 as King of Spain Portugal Naples Sicily the Seventeen Provinces etc. This enormous empire was centralized thus every order came from mainland Spain and was to be executed by the colonial administration. The corruption was considerable as to some extent the Monarchy was unable to have absolute control being thousands of miles away; it had to trust the "adelantados" and locals "criollos". The manuscript continues: Resuelva Que en muy pocos dÃas se saca y desaparece la mayor parte dello lo qual según se ha hecho relación entre otras causas proceden principalmente de que algunas… que por cedulas mias tienen o vienen dice … mi para sacar alguna cantidad de dinero oro y plata usando de diversas cutelas y modos y soploz Y nombre de las otras licencias han sacado y sacan mucha mayor cantidad de la que en virtud dellos podrÃan sacar ansi su yo como de otros y como quiera que nos en las dichas cedulas y licencias paraescuzas de otro fraude desorden les aviamos mandado y ordenado las diligencias que habÃan de haber o haller aquello no se ha guardado mi guarda ni aun por lo que se ha visto por experiencia ha sido bastante… prevenir y obiar los otros fraudes y por que en tal manera es nuestra voluntad y queremos que las otras personas que de nos tienen las otras cedulas y licencias usen dellas que juntamente con esto se provea en tal forma que ellos no puedan exceder ni excedan de lo contenido en las otras cedulas y licencias y se escusen los fraudes y cautelas que hasta aquà ha avido y para que esto se pueda mejor haffer y se cumpla lo que con ellas esta tratado y se escuse el otro daño por la presente mandamos: a todas y quales quiera personas asi naturales como extranjeras destos reynos que tuvieron de nos las otras licencia y en curo poder aquellas estuvieren aunque sean das Y concedidas por asientos Y por qualquier otra ausa y razón que sea en qualquier forma y devaxo de quelesquier clausulasy condiciones que las ayan de presentar y presenten ante nos originalmente en el mio consejo… dentro de treinta dÃas. Spain: Illegible ca. 1890. Sight size of 21 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches with the original frame measuring 24 3/8 x 20 1/2 inches. Framed and glazed. Very good.The Gate of Justice is the largest of the entrances into the castle of Alhambra. The Arabic name for the gate was long believed to refer to Islamic justice or law - charia. But in fact this was a misinterpretation for a similar-sounding word and it has been shown that the translation should be Gate of the Esplanade. Its multiple arches are decorated with the Hand of Fatima Mohammed's daughter and the key to the Islamic paradise as well as a Virgin and Child placed there by the Catholic Monarchs to consecrate the gate for Christianity.
