Dabei sehen wir noch nicht einmal den Süden des Landes, Andalusien, das von der Sonne ausgedörrte Land, das noch ärmer ist und doch die größten Dichter hervorbrachte, die Europäisches mit Arabischem zu höchster Glut und großer. Menschlichkeit vereinigten. Vielmehr beschränkt sich die Darstellung auf den Norden des weiten Landes und da wieder im wesentlichen auf den Westen. In Barcelona sind die Taxis oben schwarz und unten gelb lackiert, so daß man sie schon von weitem sehr leicht von den anderen Fahrzeugen unterscheiden kann. Außerdem gibt es hier Bars, Läden aller Art, Kinos und vor allem Menschen. Die südlichen Menschen des Mittelmeers, lebhafte, interessante Menschen, die kommen und gehen, schreien, lachen, klagen, Menschen in der verschiedenartigsten Kleidung. Soldaten, Matrosen, Mädchen mit roten Blumen im schwarzen Haar, junge Männer, die den Mädchen im Abstand von einigen Metern folgen und ihnen Komplimente machen, z. B.: "Oh, Kind meiner Träume, wer doch von deinen roten Lippen naschen könnte!" Und die Mädchen schauen sich verstohlen um und lächeln geschmeichelt, ohne zu antworten. Menschen, Menschen und überall Menschen! Die Ramblas sind ein einziger Menschenstrom zwischen Blumenständen und Zeitungskiosken. Es ist deshalb nichts Außergewöhnliches, daß Barcelona dem Proletariat, das aus den ärmlichen Dörfern im Inneren des Landes in diese reiche Stadt kommt, als ein wahres Paradies erscheint. In den Augen des katalanischen Bürgertums bildet dieses halbanalphabetische Proletariat eine Art niederen Menschentums, auf das man mit einer vollkommen ungerechtfertigten Geringschätzung herabschaut. Denn Barcelona ist das, was es jetzt ist, nicht allein durch den unbestrittenen Fleiß und die kaufmännische Geschicklichkeit der katalanischen Händler geworden, sondern vielmehr noch durch Millionen kräftiger und harter Hände von Menschen, die aus allen Richtungen der Windrose hierher kamen, um Arbeit zu suchen und - ohne es zu wissen - Reichtum hervorzuzaubern. ?
