This is the first Russian-language collection of works by the great Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca published in Moscow in 1944 during the final years of World War II. The publication of this volume featuring a preface by F. V. Kelin was a significant cultural event introducing the Soviet reader to Lorca's poignant poetry and drama. The modest softcover format and small size are typical of wartime publications. Its contents span Lorca's key creative periods from early poems to his mature masterpieces like "Gypsy Ballads" and "Lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías" making it a foundational text for understanding his reception in the Russian-speaking world. ‎Ode à Salvador Dalí.‎

‎Paris: GLM 1938. Poulenc's copy inscribed to him by both translators First edition first printing inscribed by both translators on the front free endpaper "à Francis Poulenc hommage des traducteurs Paul Éluard Louis Parrot" one of the few hors commerce copies unnumbered as issued from a total edition of 515 copies. This copy brings together a nexus of Franco-Spanish network of friendships and affairs between some of the greatest artists of the time. The translators Louis Parrot 1906-1948 a French writer and poet and Paul Éluard 1895-1952 a French poet and one of the founders of the surrealist movement met in Madrid. Éluard was married to Elena Daikonova 1894-1982 nicknamed Gala with whom he had a daughter. In 1928 ten year prior to the publication of this Ode the Éluards met Dalí at a sanatorium and visited him in Spain the following summer. Gala soon left Éluard to marry Dalí. However they had always led a rather libertine marriage notably living for several years with German artist Max Ernst 1891-1976 in a ménage à trois and there seem to have been no hard feelings over Gala's marriage as evidenced by Éluard involvement in this publication. The Éluards' daughter reminisced in a 2014 interview for The Guardian: "I married and divorced easily. There was no drama we met and parted amicably. My father was the same and each time we had a party". The recipient of this copy Poulenc 1899-1963 was an accomplished French composer and pianist. A frequenter of "La Maison des amis des livres" he met with avant-garde poets including Éluard Cocteau and Apollinaire and turned many of their works into music. The frontispiece features a photo of Dalí and Lorca in 1927. They too met in Madrid and the two men quickly became friends. More than a friendship their relationship begrudged by Gala was "an erotic tragic love out of the fact of not being able to share it" as described by Dali in 1986. "The relationship between both geniuses lasted with all its ups and downs from 1923 to 1936 the year of Lorca's execution at the onset of the Spanish Civil War. Besides the artistic partnership the link gave rise to an intense exchange of letters compiled by the journalist Víctor Fernández. Lorca wrote Ode to Salvador Dalí published in the journal Revista de Occidente. 'Lorca never did anything like that for anyone else' the journalist notes" El Pais. Their imbroglio spawned the 2008 film Little Ashes directed by Paul Morrison. Quarto pp. 26. Photographic portrait frontispiece of Lorca and Dali. Original orange printed wrappers untrimmed. Light wear to extremities slight staining and discolouration to wrappers very occasional faint foxing; a near-fine copy. OCLC 248431052; Agnès Poirier "Watching boxing with Picasso and a ménage-à-trois at home: my life with the surrealist elite" online article in The Guardian 13 April 2014; Carles Geli "Dalí and Lorca's games of seduction" in El Pais 20 June 2013. unknown‎

‎Poem of the Deep Song/Poema Del Cante Jondo‎

‎San Francisco. 1987. City Lights Books. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. 0872862046. Bilingual. Translated from the Spanish by Carlos Bauer. 134 pages. hardcover. keywords: Europe Spain Literature Poetry Translated World Literature. DESCRIPTION - The magic of Andalusia is crystallized in Federico Garcia Lorca's first major work Poem of the Deep Song written in 1921 when the poet was twenty-three years old and published a decade later. In this group of poems based on saetas soleares and siguiriyas Lorca captures the passionate flamenco cosmos of Andalusia's Gypsies 'those mysterious wandering folk who gave deep song its definitive form. Cante jondo deep song comes from a musical tradition that developed among peoples who fled into the mountains in the 15th century to escape the Spanish Inquisition. With roots in Arabic instruments Sephardic ritual Byzantine liturgy native folk songs and above all the rhythms of Gypsy life deep song is characterized by intense and profound emotion. Fearing that the priceless heritage of deep song might vanish from Spain Lorca along with Manuel de Falla and other young artists hoped to preserve 'the artistic treasure of an entire race.' In Poem of the Deep Song the poet's own lyric genius gives cante jondo a special kind of immortality. Carlos Baur is the translator of Garca Lorca's The Public and Play Without a Title: Two Posthumous Plays and of Cries from a Wounded Madrid: Poetry of the Spanish Civil War. He has also translated the work of Henry Miller and other contemporary American writers into Spanish. inventory #9840 hardcover‎

‎LORCA, Federico Garcia‎

‎Poeta en Nueva York‎

‎Mexico D. F. Mexico City: Editorial Seneca 1940. First Spanish language edition. Softcover. Very good. 187pp. illustrated with four plates by Lorca himself two in color. Very good in the publisher's white wraps with yapped edges. Some very light foxing to extremities the contents clean and minor bumping rather inevitably to the bottom edges. Most pages unopened. In the original glassine which is age-toned and has some mild tears and small chips to the extremities most notably at the spine ends. Despite the noted flaws a well-preserved copy of this fragile book. This is the second edition of the book to appear on the market; the first was bilingual. Lorca had spent nearly two years in New York in 1929 and 1930 where he witnessed firsthand the fallout from the Wall Street crash along with the Harlem Renaissance and other exciting happenings in the city which evolved into this accomplished volume. Lorca was murdered by Fascists in Spain in 1936 and the collection was published posthumously. Editorial Seneca unknown‎

‎LORCA, FEDERICO GARCIA and TERRY FROST‎

‎Selected poems of Federico Garcia Lorca. Prints by Terry Frost Eleven Poems by Federico Garcia Lorca illustrated with Eleven Etchings by Terry Frost‎

‎London: Austin/Desmond Contemporary Books October 1989 1989. Printer's proof limitation page marked "pp" and signed in pencil by Terry Frost. Eleven poems printed in Spanish and English on Velin Arches Blanc 270gsm paper folders 575x385mm. The title page is designed by Frost and printed by lithography. The colour etchings which are loosely inserted into the folders are printed on Somerset Satin 300gsm paper some hand-coloured by Frost. All are signed in pencil by Frost and marked "pp". Housed in a black cloth covered Solander box designed by the artist. Issued in an edition of seventy-five. Printed in collaboration with Terry Frost at the Print Centre London. Production and typography coordination by Gordon House and Hugh Stoneman. There was an hors de commerce edition of a further fifteen copies. A set of artist's proofs 4/10 is at the Tate. Some very slight marking to the box but otherwise this is a very good set in excellent condition. Terry Frost's etchings for this collection of Lorca's poems are a personal response to the poetry. Frost started to read Lorca in the 1970s and immediately he "was inspired by the poet's powerful visual imagery particularly his emotive descriptions of colour". Later Frost said of this discovery: "Lorca is so simple and so direct and so full of colour and ideas". And in the year Frost made these images he wrote: "I've been in love with Lorca's poetry for fifteen years". This beautiful vibrant collection represents a perfect intertwining of word and image. Also included in this collection is a single sheet from an artist's sketchbook 400x300mm of pen and ink and watercolour sketches of twelve human figures. On the verso an inscription reads "Nous sommes heureux de commencer cette nouvelle annee avec vous. affectueusement Menarl Chantil ". It is unsigned but the work is of a high standard with a true artist's feeling for the movement of the body. Ten of the figures are shown standing with two sitting on stools and they are gesticulating and posing as though acting or public speaking. The faces are indistinct and the heads are drawn using a spiral motif which appears elsewhere on the sheet presumably where the artist intended to draw other figures. We have not been able to establish the artist although there is the possibility that it is Terry Frost himself. Although he is best known as an abstract artist he was an accomplished draughtsman and the spiral appears frequently in his work. This book was sold with the sheet of drawings by an art dealer in Cornwall which was where Frost spent much of his life and career as a central figure in the St Ives School. London: Austin/Desmond Contemporary Books October 1989 hardcover‎
