LORCA Federico Garcia.
Ode à Salvador Dali.
Paris: GLM 1938. Poulenc's copy inscribed to him by both translators Quarto pp. 26. Original orange printed wrappers untrimmed. Photographic portrait frontispiece of Lorca and Dali. Light wear to extremities slight staining and discolouration to wrappers very occasional faint foxing; a near-fine copy. First edition first printing inscribed by both translators on the front free endpaper "à Francis Poulenc hommage des traducteurs Paul Éluard Louis Parrot" one of the few hors commerce copies unnumbered as issued from a total edition of 515 copies. This copy brings together a nexus of Franco-Spanish network of friendships and affairs between some of the greatest artists of the time. The translators Louis Parrot 1906-1948 a French writer and poet and Paul Éluard 1895-1952 a French poet and one of the founders of the surrealist movement met in Madrid. Éluard was married to Elena Daikonova 1894-1982 nicknamed Gala with whom he had a daughter. In 1928 ten year prior to the publication of this Ode the Éluards met Dalà at a sanatorium and visited him in Spain the following summer. Gala soon left Éluard to marry DalÃ. However they had always led a rather libertine marriage notably living for several years with German artist Max Ernst 1891-1976 in a ménage à trois and there seem to have been no hard feelings over Gala's marriage as evidenced by Éluard involvement in this publication. The Éluards' daughter reminisced in a 2014 interview with The Guardian: "I married and divorced easily. There was no drama we met and parted amicably. My father was the same and each time we had a party". The recipient of this copy Poulenc 1899-1963 was an accomplished French composer and pianist. A frequenter of "La Maison des amis des livres" he met with avant-garde poets including Éluard Cocteau and Apollinaire and turned many of their works into music. The frontispiece features a photo of Dalà and Lorca in 1927. They too met in Madrid and the two men quickly became friends. More than a friendship their relationship begrudged by Gala was "an erotic tragic love out of the fact of not being able to share it" as described by Dali in 1986. "The relationship between both geniuses lasted with all its ups and downs from 1923 to 1936 the year of Lorca's execution at the onset of the Spanish Civil War. Besides the artistic partnership the link gave rise to an intense exchange of letters compiled by the journalist VÃctor Fernández. Lorca wrote Ode to Salvador Dalà published in the journal Revista de Occidente. 'Lorca never did anything like that for anyone else' the journalist notes" El Pais. Their imbroglio spawned the 2008 film Little Ashes directed by Paul Morrison. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Mariana Pineda achieved immediate critical success on its first performance in Barcelona in 1927. Lorca Federico Garcia
Poemes Posthumos: Canciones Musicales Divan Del Tamarit
Mexico: Ediciones Mexicanas S. en P. 1945. Spanish text. Paperback. 104pp. Octavo 21 cm White red and black printed wraps with a worn glassine wrapper that has numerous losses from the edges. The book is in very good condition. The edges of the covers are lightly bumped and the edges of the text block are subtly foxed. There is a tiny chip in the paper at the head of the spine. Much of García Lorca's work was filled with popular themes such as Flamenco and Gypsy culture. In 1922 García Lorca organized the first "Cante Jondo" festival in which Spain's most famous "deep song" singers and guitarists performed. The deep song style permeated his poems of the early 1920s. During this period García Lorca became part of a group of artists known as Generación del 27 which included Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel who introduced the young poet to surrealism. In 1928 his book of verse Romancero Gitano "The Gypsy Ballads" brought Lorca much fame and it was reprinted seven times during his lifetime. Ediciones Mexicanas, S. en P. paperback

Penguin 2002. 5th or later Printing. Soft cover. Very Good. Lower edge slightly scuffed otherwise a bright VG paperback. From the blurb: "Lorca lived in New York as a student between 1929 and 1930. His reaction to the sprawling city with its crowds skyscrapers brutality and loneliness was violent. It produced his most daring and explosive poetry expressing feelings of dislocation and alienation in brilliant verse and turning New York into a city of his imagination."
