Ramsay was highly respected for his expertise in the historic geography and topography of Asia Minor and of its political, social, cultural and religious history. He travelled widely in Asia Minor and rapidly became the recognized authority on all matters relating to the districts associated with St Paul's missionary journeys and on Christianity in the early Roman Empire. This is Professor Ramsay's remarkable and extensive report on the geographical conditions determining the ancient almost primal history and religion in Asia Minor, primarily featuring the importance of the great mountain wall of Taurus, influences of Roman Empire on the prosperity of the cities, and the outcomes of Arab raids and Seljuk conquest, he further more illustrates the social customs of Anatolia. This is a fascinating report, astounding for its scope and consequential detail, contributing immensely to the history and geography of Asia Minor, accompanied by a spectacular large fold-out color map.‎

‎Notre ouvrage réunit le texte de deux publications au départ indépendantes : Lettres sur quelques cantons de la Suisse, écrites en 1819 (1820) et Lettres sur la Suisse, écrites en 1820, suivies d'un voyage à Chamony et au Simplon (1822). La "deuxième édition" parut également chez Nepveu en 1822, mais en deux volumes in-8 et avec 35 gravures seulement. Notre troisième édition est à la première de ce format. Évidemment, elle ne comprend pas la suite (Lettres sur la Suisse, écrites en 1824 et 1825), qui ne parut qu'en 1826. L'ouvrage fut constamment revu et refaçonné jusqu'en 1828.La plupart des lettres sont adressées à la femme de l'auteur, Claudine Houdon (la fille du sculpteur Houdon), mais on en trouve aussi beaucoup pour Abel-Rémusat, pour Nicollet, etc. Le dernier volume concerne la région de Chamonix, et le Simplon.I.
