Il volume frutto di pazienti ricerche condotte nel corso di diversi anni descrive la vita e la carriera di Orazio Silvestri docente dell'Universit� di Catania e innovatore nel campo degli studi di vulcanologia in Italia; da Firenze a Catania passando per Napoli e Torino Silvestri si � dedicato essenzialmente allo studio dei fenomeni eruttivi dell'Etna. Grazie ai numerosi documenti inediti presentati si � tentato di ricostruire in particolare il ruolo del disegno nell'attivit� scientifica di Silvestri quale procedimento privilegiato per lo studio del territorio etneo e soprattutto per la documentazione dei fenomeni connessi alle sue modificazioni sotto l'azione dei processi vulcanici. Nei saggi proposti ci si sofferma inoltre sulla rappresentazione grafica delle eruzioni e della composizione mineralogica delle rocce con la camera lucida e si sottolinea il contributo apportato al disegno dai radicali cambiamenti nel sistema delle tecniche. L'opera di Silvestri dimostra infatti che proprio nel momento in cui la fotografia tenta di sostituire il disegno inteso come documento maggiore � l'interesse per la rappresentazione grafica quale strumento esplorativo. Le illustrazioni del libro rappresentano dei documenti di rara bellezza in cui l'arte si fonda con la scienza per descrivere mirabilmente lungo la seconda met� dell'Ottocento la storia eruttiva dell'Etna il vulcano che l'Unesco ha recentemente inserito nel patrimonio mondiale dell'umanit� definendolo come uno dei "pi� emblematici e attivi del mondo". Albert I 13 November 1848 - 26 June 1922 was Prince of Monaco and Duke of Valentinois from 10 September 1889 until his death. He devoted much of his life to oceanography. Alongside his expeditions Albert I made reforms on political economic and social levels bestowing a constitution on the Principality in 1911. Born Albert Honor� Charles Grimaldi on 13 November 1848 in Paris France the son of Prince Charles III 1818-1889 and Countess Antoinette de M�rode-Westerloo 1828-1864 a Belgian noblewoman maternal aunt of Donna Maria Vittoria dal Pozzo Princess della Cisterna Duchess consort of Aosta and Queen consort of Spain. As a young man Prince Albert served in the Spanish Navy during the Franco-Prussian War he joined the French Navy where he was awarded the Legion of Honor. In addition to his interest in oceanographic studies Albert had a keen interest in the origins of man and in Paris he founded the "Institute for Human Paleontology" that was responsible for a number of archeological digs. The "Grimaldi Man" found in the Baousse-Rousse cave was named in his honour. Albert's intellectual achievements gained him worldwide recognition and in 1909 the British Academy of Science made him a member. Bertha Felicitas Sophie Freifrau von Suttner Baroness Bertha von Suttner n�e Countess Kinsky Gr�fin Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau; 9 June 1843 - 21 June 1914 was an Austrian-Bohemian pacifist and novelist. In 1905 she became the second female Nobel laureate after Marie Curie in 1903 the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the first Austrian laureate. Suttner was born on 9 June 1843 at Kinsk� Palace in the Obecn� dvur district of Prague. Her parents were the Austrian Lieutenant general German: Feldmarschall-Leutnant Franz de Paula Josef Graf Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau recently deceased at the age of 75 and his wife Sophie Wilhelmine von K�rner who was fifty years his junior. Her father was a member of the Czech House of Kinsky via descent from Vil�m Kinsk�. Suttner's mother came from a family that belonged to untitled nobility of significantly lower status being the daughter of Joseph von K�rner a cavalry officer and a distant relative of the poet Theodor K�rner. For the rest of her life Suttner faced exclusion from the Austrian high aristocracy due to her mixed descent; for instance only those with unblemished aristocratic pedigree back to their great-great-grandparents were eligible to be presented at court. She was additionally disadvantaged because her father as a third son had no great estates or other financial resources to be inherited.
