COLLINS WW W W
Rambles beyond Railways; or Notes in Cornwall taken a-foot. With Illustrations by Henry C. Brandling.
Richard Bentley 1851. 8vo. First Edition with a tinted lithographed frontispiece skilfully mounted on pale cartridge and 11 tinted lithographed plates; late-nineteenth century half calf neatly rebacked with new endpapers to style old blind-tooled backstrip laid down original gilt-ruled morocco labels preserved title-label with two gilt letters reinforced sprinkled edges an unusually bright clean and carefully restored copy with virtually no trace of the usual foxing. The plates were engraved by M & N Hanhart from illustrations by Brandling. This is the scarce original edition of Collins' third book following his biography of his father 'Memoirs of the Life of William Collins' 2v 1848 and his first novel 'Antonina' 3v. 1850. It is arguably his best-remembered work together with his two later novels 'The Woman in White' 1860 and 'The Moonstone' 1868. Very nice copy of an uncommon and notable account and a mainstay of any Cornish collection. Sadleir 'Excursions' p.137 gives the date of publication from the Bentley Catalogue as 30 January 1851; Anderson p.70; CBEL III p.481; Parrish pp.14-16; Wolff 1374. Richard Bentley, unknown

Comber, Thomas (1645-1699)
An Historical Vindication of the Divine Right of Tithes from Scripture Reason and the Opinion and Practice of Jews gentiles and Christians in all Ages. Designed to Supply the Omissions Answer the Objections and Rectifie the Mistakes of Mr. Selden’s
<p><b>his is a rare publication and has been rebacked to preserve the original period boards. The pages are clean with only occasional foxing to the first and last few leaves and a slight browning to the title-page. There is an interesting ex libris plate from James Harrop Dransfield on the front paste-down. It shows a head in profile impaled upon a sword with the motto: Cutta Cavat Lapidem Non Vi Sed Saepe Cadendol. Also contains the bookplate of James Harrop Dransfield with the quotation "Gutta Cavat Lapidem No Vi Sed Saepe Cadendo." or "</b>A drop of water hollows a stone not by force but by continuously dripping." and it has a Head impaled on a Standing Sword. <b>This is an extremely rare book sold by Calixbooks online. NO Copies of the First Edition are present in ANY library. All libraries have the 1685 edition. No copies of the 1685 edition are available online. Only one library around the world has a copy of the book. <br /></b></p><p><b><br /></b></p><p>Thomas Comber:</p><p><b>'I have reason to believe many have been encouraged to commit by that current and commonly received Error That Tithes are not due by Divine right but only by humane positive Constitutions. For in the days of our Fathers while the Divine right was generally maintained and believed it was thought a matter of Conscience to pay Tithes justly. But now they that are either so cunning to avoid discovery or so great to despise the punishments of the Law do without scrupple in part or in whole subtract or detain their Tithes and by this false Principle are perswaded it is no Sin that they need to repent of so that the same Error that encourages them to do this great injury to the Church causeth them to do a greater to their own Souls.' Comber's Epistle Dedicatory. Comber blames the common occurrence of this error on Selden's work on tithes from whom the argument is borrowed. Comber seeks to straighten out this legal mess and get the believers back to giving every Sunday. A rare and unusual book sold online. Wing C-5472. </b></p> Roycroft, S. for Clavel, Robert hardcover
