‎Il y a cent ans, le 22 janvier 1901, s'éteignait Alexandrina Victoria de Grande-Bretagne, plus connue sous le nom de Victoria Ière. Au cours d'un règne qui fût le plus long de la monarchie britannique, l'Angleterre se hissa au premier rang des nations par sa puissance économique et l'étendue d'un empire que seul Rome, avant elle, avait égalé. Dans le même temps, alors que l'Europe était en proie aux convulsions et que la France s'épuisait à changer de régimes politiques, les Anglais, pragmatiques, conservaient la monarchie en lui ôtant tout pouvoir de nuisance et bâtissaient une démocratie parlementaire exemplaire. Bien que de tempérament autoritaire et capricieux, Victoria fut convaincue par le prince Albert, son mari, que la royauté, s'appuyant sur les classes moyennes entreprenantes, devait accompagner l'évolution démocratique et non la freiner. Elle devint ainsi le symbole vivant – et presque divinisé à la fin de son règne – d'une nation britannique persuadée que Dieu lui avait donné mission de dominer le monde.
