Davois I, 66. - II. ‎London HMSO; Harrison and Sons 1878-1881. . First editions; two volumes containing fifteen works 4to 33 x 21.5 cm; bookplates to pastedowns a occasional small chips to upper margin otherwise internally fine; first volume in half red morocco cloth boards gilt lettering to flat spine minor wear to extremities but otherwise a very good copy; second volume in half blue calf cloth boards gilt spine with gilt morocco lettering piece all edges gilt slight wear a little chipping to head and foot of spine shelf mark to spine otherwise a very good copy; vi 266; ii 27; 17; 37; 6; 9; 87; 14; 8; 31; 4; 14; iv 107; 87; v 165pp.
A collection of fifteen works of government correspondence and dispatches charting the British relationship with Afghanistan and by extension Russia from 1863 to 1881 culminating in the Second Anglo-Afghan War. The 'Central Asian Question' the Great Game saw its denouement play out in the Second Second Anglo-Afghan War and following boundary negotiations in the 1880s and 90s.

The letters and despatches contained in these works contain an enormous amount of detail about the politics economics and diplomacy of Britain and Afghanistan in this period in particular the war years of 1879-1881. Important figures such as James Bruce Sir Henry Rawlinson John Lawrence Henry Marion Durand Lord Mayo Robert Napier Edward Bulwer-Lytton Granville Leveson-Gower and Spencer Cavendish all penned or put their name to the letters and despatches in these volumes and reveal the attitudes of the British government at the time. What perhaps stands out the most is the fragility of the British temperament in regards to either real or imagined Russian influence in Afghanistan and the constant shuffling of Amirs in a vain attempt to turn Afghanistan into a puppet state. Although the military actions of the Second Anglo-Afghan War were considered successful by the British Government deposing Yaqub Khan and his brother Ayub Khan from the throne it was also vastly expensive to the tune of nearly 20 million pounds and did not result in any territorial gains or subjugation of the region.

The owner who bound the first volume titled the spine 'Afghanistan Betrayed by Lord Beaconsfield to Russia'. This is a strong statement considering Afghanistan preserved its independence and status as a buffer zone following the evacuation of Kandahar and Afghanistan by the British Army. It is an even stronger statement given that the trigger of the conflict Britain's retaliation to Afghanistan hospitality to Russian envoys is widely understood to have been the Viceroy of India Lord Lytton's doing and in direct opposition to orders from Disraeli himself. Perhaps the accusation speaks most to the accentuated fears around Russia and the decline of the influence of the British Empire.
London, HMSO; Harrison and Sons, 1878-1881. hardcover‎

‎[Great Britain, Ireland, Civil Wars] By an Impartiall Pen‎

‎THE CIVIL WARRES OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND Containing an Exact History of their Occasion Originall Progress and Happy End.```‎

‎London: Printed by R.W. for Philiip Chetwind 1661. First Edition. Folio 11" x 7.25" bound in contemporary polished calf the spine with raised bands one compartment with morocco lettering label gilt. xx 384 pp. A copy with some wear due to age and use text lightly mellowed the front hinge starting the rear hinge sound some wear to the extremities still a well preserved copy of a rare book. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE WORK.
The English Civil Wars comprised three wars which were fought between Charles I and Parliament between 1642 and 1651. The wars were part of a wider conflict involving Wales Scotland and Ireland known as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. The struggle consisted of the First English Civil War and the Second English Civil War. The Anglo-Scottish War of 1650 to 1652 is sometimes referred to as the Third English Civil War. The human cost of the wars was devastating. Up to 200000 people lost their lives or 4.5% of the population. This was as great a loss proportionally as during the First World War.
The causes of the wars were complex and many-layered. At the centre of the conflict were disagreements about religion and discontent over the king’s use of power and his economic policies. While the conflicts in the three kingdoms of England Scotland and Ireland had similarities each had their own specific issues and objectives. The First English Civil War was fought primarily over the correct balance of power between Parliament and Charles I. It ended in June 1646 with Royalist defeat and the king in custody. In 1649 the victorious Parliamentarians sentenced Charles I to death. His execution resulted in the only period of republican rule in British history during which military leader Oliver Cromwell ruled as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth. This period is known as the Interregnum and lasted for 11 years until 1660 when Charles’s son Charles II was restored to the throne.
The Civil Wars saw the beginning of the modern British Army tradition with the creation of the New Model Army – the country’s first national army comprised of trained professional soldiers. Many castles were besieged during the wars resulting in severe damage. Others were deliberately destroyed or ‘slighted’ after the fighting.
However victory exposed Parliamentarian divisions over the nature of the political settlement. The vast majority went to war in 1642 to assert Parliament's right to participate in government not abolish the monarchy which meant Charles' refusal to make concessions led to a stalemate. Concern over the political influence of radicals within the New Model Army like Oliver Cromwell led to an alliance between moderate Parliamentarians and Royalists supported by the Covenanter Scots. Royalist defeat in the 1648 Second English Civil War resulted in the execution of Charles I in January 1649 and establishment of the Commonwealth of England.
In 1650 Charles II was crowned King of Scotland in return for agreeing to create a Presbyterian church in both England and Scotland. The subsequent Anglo-Scottish war ended with Parliamentarian victory at Worcester on 3 September 1651. Both Ireland and Scotland were incorporated into the Commonwealth and the British Isles became a unitary state. This arrangement ultimately proved both unpopular and unviable in the long term and was dissolved upon the Stuart Restoration in 1660. The outcome of the civil wars effectively set England and Scotland on course towards a parliamentary monarchy form of government. wiki
Printed by R.W. for Philiip Chetwind hardcover‎

‎[GREAT BRITAIN - IRON]‎

‎The State of the Trade and Manufactory of Iron in Great-Britain considered‎

‎London 1750. 8vo. 6 7/8 x 4 1/4 inches. 15 pp. An abridgement of the Interest of Great Britain in supplying herself with Iron circa 1747. Half red morocco and marble paper boards. Marginal notes trimmed

A conflicted call for economic protectionism on the eve of industrial transformation and a snapshot of British iron trade policy in 1750 caught between timber tariffs and transatlantic competition.

An important and revealing mid-eighteenth-century pamphlet addressing the British iron industry at a moment of significant economic and technological transition. This work is considered an abridged version of The Interest of Great Britain in Supplying Herself with Iron published circa 1747 and offers a pointed critique of foreign and colonial competition in iron production. The anonymous author provides a rare quantitative estimate of domestic iron output 18000 tons annually and laments the numerous challenges facing British ironmasters including the rising cost and increasing scarcity of timber then still the primary fuel used in smelting. In a notably conflicted argument the tract decries the influx of Swedish iron while expressing even greater alarm over the growth of ironworks in Britain's North American colonies viewing both as threats to the domestic market. Strikingly the pamphlet makes no mention of the use of pit coal i.e. mineral coal in iron manufacturing a technological development that would prove pivotal. This omission is particularly curious given that Lord Dudley had patented the process in 1619 and that Abraham Darby's pioneering use of coke at Coalbrookdale had been underway for over a decade by the time of this publication. The absence of such a reference suggests either a conservative industrial perspective or a lack of awareness of emergent metallurgical practices that would soon transform the industry and pave the way for Britain's dominance during the Industrial Revolution. Referenced by J.R. McCulloch in his A Select Collection of Scarce and Valuable Tracts on Commerce 1859 who found it "curious" for its data and omissions alike this tract provides not only valuable insight into 18th-century economic policy and protectionist sentiment but also a fascinating snapshot of the iron trade on the cusp of technological upheaval.

ESTC T76989; Sabin 90635.

Collation : I.
