Handsome device to title-page. Half-title, dedication leaf. Set in double columns. Hardcover, bound in contemporary half calf, spine restored with original gilt-decorated spine laid-down, this bit dried-out and chipped at end, lower joint and head of spine reinforced with matching cloth, corners chafed. Moderate binding but a very good and clean interior, with all the wonderful plates in a very good condition. ~ New edition in its rare 1840 first appearance. The charming plates here are coloured by contemporary hand with rich, dense dyes, and are delicately heightened with fine touches of shellac, adding richness and elegance to the darker tones. Joachim Marie Jean Jacques Alexandre Jules Ambert (1804-1890), son of a General, became a soldier himself, serving from 1824 until 1870, rising to become a Dragoon officer, later a General of the Cavalry.
