In fine condition. A very well kept copy. ~ First edition. Very rare. The identity of the POW "British Officer" remained a mystery and it is just as well a fictitious personality. In any event the source for the book is an article in the German magazine "Unterhaltungsblätter für Welt- und Menschenkunde" which the publisher, Gerrit Portielje, saw sometime in 1826 and translated into Dutch. No further biographical details were provided or could be found.

Small octavo. Pp. 249, (1) publisher's catalogue. Hardcover, bound in the original full marbled calf by F. Remnant, with his stamp, publisher's blind stamp within oval garland to upper board, spine lettered direct and gilt ruled, a little worn and restored, gilt turn-ins, corner-tips rubbed, lower inner hinge cracked but firm, upper inner hinge restored, all edges sprinkled. Overall fine internal condition. ~ First edition thus. Robert Southey (1774-1843) was an English poet of the Romantic school, and one of the so-called "Lake Poets". Although his fame tends to be eclipsed by that of his contemporaries such as William Wordsworth, Southey's verse enjoys enduring popularity. Born in Bristol, he was educated at Westminster School (from which he was expelled for writing a magazine article condemning flogging) and Balliol College, Oxford. (Of his time at Oxford, Southey was later to say "All I learnt was a little swimming (.) and a little boating") He published his first collection of poems in 1794, and continued publishing over 20 major works throughout his life.

Two Plays bound together: 162 p. Continuous pagination. Early ownership of J. Waldier, 1774, on first title page. Bottom margin of The Funeral title page clipped. 12 mo. 155mm. Virtually disbound. This perhaps should best be considered a candidate for rebinding. Sir Richard Steele (ca. 1672-1729), was a famed english author and politician. The Funeral (first produced in 1702), with its patriotic motifs, apparently attracted the favourable attention of the King himself. The Tender Husband, a comedy, had a brief initial run in April 1705. It returned to Drury Lane for performances later in the year and remained a staple of the London stage repertory for many decades, without remuneration for the author. It is significant that Steele did not have another new play produced until many years later when he was a partner in the Drury Lane management and thus able to reap rewards both as author and as manager - DNB. Harmondsworth Middlesex England: Penguin Books. Complete series of 9 books various editions published 1960-1972 covers history of England from Roman times until 1965. All are sound with square spines and pages firmly attached. All have faintly to moderately toned pages. Most have either an inkstamp or previous owner's name to first page and most covers show mild to moderate edgewear. Several have price sticker or remains of it on cover. Volume 5 has sparse underlining of single words in pencil and owner's name marked out in pen Volume 6 and 8 have ruled underlining in red ink. Volume 7 has pen writing to front cover. Volume 9 is entirely unmarked but spine is creased no effect to integrity of binding and there is a corner tip crease to front cover and very short tear to edge of back cover. Overall most volumes are in vg condition while 6 8 & 9 are g to vg-. I also have available several odd volumes of the set: please enquire if interested. Soft Cover.
