Recounted are such obscure events as the Earthquake of London notorious executions spectacular masques etc. Phillips brings an academic rigor to his subject yet never fails to entertain or make the lively canvas as vivid as a Fielding or Richardson novel to which this history should be an indispensable supplement. This copy would be fine on all points but for some light fox marks on the rear side foreedge which is why I describe it as near fine. DJ is fine and now protected with mylar. First Edition with lithographed frontispiece map and 35 lithographed engraved plate one finely coloured by hand some mild age-staining to plates; original coarse-grained green cloth sides with multiple frame border in blind enclosing title lettered in gilt expertly rebacked in cloth to style uncut a very good bright clean crisp copy. With the errata slip often missing tipped-in at p.291 and 16pp publisher's catalogue dated November 1862 bound in at end. The plates are by Bevan after sketches by the author and engraved by Monkhouse of York. The work includes topographical and personal indexes. This work is often described wrongly as possessing 35 plates for the plates themselves are numbered 1-35. The true complement is 36 as called for on title and list of plates for plate 27 is present in two forms. 'This work professedly on geology contains much antiquarian and topographical information. The learned Professor from his position in the Geological Survey undertaken by the Government was personally enabled to collect his information from every part of the County' Boyne. With the addenda and errata leaf sometimes missing and a bookseller's blind stamp on blank preliminary . VERY SCARCE. A second edition was published in 1851.
