Bound in late 19th century half leather now disbound - very worn to the spine edges which are split the front board is detached. Lightly browned spotting and a few stains. Creasing towards the rear of the book. The plates all have some offsetting. The first plate has a tear in the upper section but is signed in ink to the foot - OW Serres 39 presumably by the author. The other two plates are not signed. Olivia Wilmot Serres went on to claim that she was the legitimate daughter of the Duke of Cumberland and was know as Princess Olive. Rev Wilmot and his niece lived at the Rectory at Barton on the Heath in south Warwickshire. Première édition française de l'ouvrage du publiciste anglais John Shebbeare, A fourth Letter to the People of England on the conduct of the Ministers in Alliances, fleets and armies, since the first differences on the Ohio to the taking of Minorca by the French, publiée la même année que l'originale. Le traducteur Edme-Jacques Genet avance la raison suivante à son travail : « Il m'a paru qu'un ouvrage de cette nature ne pourrait manquer d'être bien reçu en France, & que chacun y serait bien aise d'apprendre des Anglais mêmes quels moyens la Providence employe pour leur ouvrir les yeux sur leur malheureuse situation ». John Shebbeare (1709-1788) critique en effet sévèrement l'attitude du gouvernement de son pays tandis que débute la Guerre de Sept Ans mettant aux prises français et britanniques sur le sol américain ; le traducteur précise : « les Ministres du roi d'Angleterre sont représentés non seulement comme les auteurs de la guerre présente, mais aussi comme la cause de tous les malheurs qu'elle a attirés sur la Nation ». Poursuivi à cause de la virulence de ses attaques, Shebbeare fut condamné à trois ans de prison (1756-1758).
