‎* Very rare ! ----- William Pinnock (3 February 1782 in Alton, Hampshire ? 21 October 1843 in London) was a British publisher and educational writer. He was at first a schoolmaster, then a bookseller. In 1817 he went to London and, in partnership with Samuel Maunder, began to publish cheap educational works. The firm's first productions were a series of Catechisms, planned by Pinnock, consisting of short popular manuals, arranged in the form of question and answer, of the different departments of knowledge. This style was later copied by Fanny Umphelby.[2] The dialogues were followed by abridged editions of Goldsmith's histories of England, Greece and Rome, and a series of county histories which were no less profitable. Pinnock lost nearly all his money in outside speculation. Pinnock is mentioned, as a depressing set of texts, in contrast to Washington Irving's stories, in George Eliot's novel The Mill on the Floss (1860): Maggie, speaking about her 'gloomy fancy' to her cousin Lucy says: "Perhaps it comes from the school diet ? watery rice-pudding spiced with Pinnock. Let us hope it will give way before my mother's custards and this charming Geoffrey Crayon.". Pinnock's son, William Henry Pinnock (1813?1885), a clergyman, was the editor and author of several elementary textbooks and scriptural manuals, and of various works on ecclesiastical law and usage. ‎19th Century. . Very good. - A one-and-a-half page letter consisting of over 35 words penned on 4-7/8 inch high by 4 inch wide creamy white paper. Responding to Miss Thompson's request the actor Henry Maeder Pitt is enclosing his autograph and mentions that he is also enclosing "a letter of Charles Keen's and one by H.J. Byron the playwrite" neither of which are here present. Signed in full "Henry Maeder Pitt" on the attached integral leaf. There is a small piece out from the bottom corner of the second leaf. Glue and paper remnants at the corners of the blank verso of the second page would indicate that the letter was once mounted in an album. Very good. <p>The 19th century actor Henry Maeder Pitt was born in Albany New York in 1850. He was active in England and America and joined the Augustin Daly Company in 1882. His death in NYC from poison on March 7 1898 was believed to be a suicide. 19th Century. unknown‎

He served as Chief Justice of Pennsylvania (1851-1854), Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice (1851-1856), Attorney General (1857-1860) and the U.S. Secretary of State (1860-1861) under President James Buchanan. He denied the constitutionality of secession, and urged that Fort Sumter be properly reinforced and defended. However, he also argued that a state could not be legally coerced by the Federal government. Black was also briefly Counsel for President Johnson in his Impeachment trial before the United States Senate, and for William W. Belknap; United States Secretary of War from 1869 to 1876, who in 1876 was impeached on a charge of corruption; he also represented Samuel J.
