Titelrückseiten, etwas braunfleckig; ohne Band 3 des England-Teiles).‎ ‎Aus der maßgeblichen, gegenüber der Erstausgabe um 2 Bände vermehrten Auflage einer der "meistgelesenen Reisebeschreibungen der Zeit" (NDB), die seinerzeit sehr umstritten war und meistens missverstanden wurde. Vor allem begeisterte Italienreisende wie Goethe, Jagemann u.a. haben Archenholz sein "verachtendes" Italienbild (vollständig in Band 4 - 5!) vorgeworfen. Dabei war das Hauptanliegen des Historikers Joh. Wilh. v. Archenholz (1743 - 1812) gar nicht die "romantische" Reisebeschreibung, obwohl sein Werk eine Fülle hervorragender, kulturhistorisch wertvoller Beobachtungen enthält, sondern der gelungene Vergleich zwischen einem modernen republikanischen Regierungssystem, das Archenholz am besten in England verwirklicht sah und auch für Deutschland empfiehlt, und dem überholten, feudalen System, dessen negativstes Beispiel für ihn das "unwissende und sklavische" Italien darstellte. Band 5 enthält als Abschluß Archenholz' notwendige "Rechtfertigung gegen die Beschuldigungen des Herrn Bibliothekar Jagemann" aus Weimar.- Goed. April 1888 in Liverpool) war ein englischer Dichter und Kulturkritiker. 1849 hatte Matthew Arnold seinen ersten Gedichtband veröffentlicht, 1852 folgte mit Empedocles on Etna der zweite Band. Erst seit 1853 publizierte er Lyrik unter seinem wirklichen Namen und übte strenge Selbstkritik an seinen früheren Arbeiten, denen es stellenweise an klassisch-antiker Ausgewogenheit gemangelt habe. Der Dichter Arnold wurde nun bekannt. Es folgten noch die akademische klassische Tragödie Merope (1858) sowie die New Poems (1867) mit Elegien für den verstorbenen Vater und einen Freund. Unterdessen hatte sich der Autor immer mehr der Kulturkritik zugewandt. 1857 war Arnold Professor für Dichtung in seinem geliebten Oxford geworden. Er war einer der ersten Dozenten, die ihre Vorlesungen nicht mehr in Latein hielten. Aus seinen Vorträgen gingen die Bücher On Translating Homer (1861, 1862) und On the Study of Celtic Literature (1867) hervor. The book requires the use of an edition (such, for example, as the 'Globe'), in which the poems are arranged'in the order in which Arnold left them. The reader will find many passages-and even single lines -here discussed in some detail, though space could not be spared to print the text of the poem of which they are a part; moreover the notes provided by the poet himself (who was fond of annotating his work) are not here reprinted, since they will be included in the forthcoming volumes, together with his prefaces and appendices. In discussing the various poems no attempt has been made to achieve uniformity of treatment, save for a certain general procedure which will be obvious to the reader. The commentaries naturally vary in length, as well as in interest and importance. Disappointingly little has been discovered as to the exact date of composition of many of Arnold's poems; what might be learned, therefore, from an exact chronology of the poems, we are unable to provide. Nor have we attempted to produce a 'handbook' with full annotation of matters which may be settled by easy recourse to books of reference.
