Previous owner's collection label another owner's penciled name a 1.5 x 1.5 in store label to the rear endpaper. 18mo black and gilt pebbled leather all edges gilt four raised bands to spine which is titled in gilt Sunday Lessons on spine and front cover. Lessons-237 pages; New Testament-260 pages. From the collection of a collector of prayer books who wrote extensively on the field. The penciled name is that of Arthur William Goodwin Hudson who was a coadjutor bishop in the Anglican Diocese of Sydney. He studied at the London College of Divinity and was ordained in 1941. He began his career as a Curate at St Paul Chatham after which he became Vicar of Good Easter. From 1945 to 1948 he was Headmaster at Windsor School Santiago and then the incumbent at St James Holloway until 1955. After a similar post at Woodford Wells he was consecrated to serve the Sydney diocese as coadjutor bishop on 25 March 1960. After four years based in Point Piper New South Wales he returned to England and became Vicar of St Pauls Portman Square. <p><strong>1640 Thomas Cranmer 1ed 39 Articles Henry VIII English Reformation Legum RARE</strong></p><p>An extremely important first edition of '<em>Reformatio Legum Ecclesiasticarum'</em> a work on ecclesiastical law when Henry VIII initiated the English Reformation and separation of the Church of England from the Catholic Church and papal rule. Thomas Cranmer was closely tied to the king both politically and as a friend and was an important figure in the development of this work. This work established laws and regulations for the church including prayer music testimony excommunication judicial cases and political ties to the church. Other topics covered in this work involved domestic disputes such as divorce as well as more controversial topics including calling nonconformity to the church 'superstitions and idolatrous'. Hawkins II 537.</p><p>This 1640 reworking of the '<em>Thirty Nine Articles'</em> was translated out of the original English and into Latin by John Cheke and in 1553 was reportedly published in the name of King Henry VIII. This translation was the beginning of what would lead to Thomas Cranmer's being burned alive. Much of the contents of this compilation was used by John Foxe in his portrayal of Cranmer in his '<em>Book of Martyrs'</em>.</p><p>According to the British Museum Catalogue this work is</p><p>"A code of ecclesiastical law intended for use in the Church of England but never ratified by Parliament. Drawn up in 1552 by Commissioners headed by Thomas Cranmer. Interestingly three of the plates are of a more political nature being the "Gun-Powder Treason" the "Martyrdom of King Charles I" and the "Restoration of King Charles II." Red ruling to the borders of the double-columned text title pages and plates. The Whole Book of Psalms Collected into English Metre by Thomas Sternhold John Hopkins and others . 'Printed by J. Neither text is paginated; the final leaf of the Book of Common Prayer is R4; the final leaf of The Whole Book of Psalms is I6. Front hinge reinforced with Japanese tissue.
