Carlyle, Thomas
Past and Present
Book shows very light wear to covers only with blue cloth hardback boards with green and red print and embossed edging. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind with age-toned paper, 403 pages. Publication date is estimated. From Wikipedia: In 1843, Carlyle published his anti-democratic Past and Present, with its doctrine of ordered work. In it, he influentially called attention to what he termed the "Condition of England" saying "England is full of wealth...supply for human want in every kind; yet England is dying of inanition". Past and Present combines medieval history with criticism of 19th-century British society. Carlyle wrote it in seven weeks as a respite from the harassing labour of writing Cromwell. He was inspired by the recently published Chronicles of the Abbey of Saint Edmund's Bury, which had been written by Jocelin of Brakelond at the close of the 12th century. This account of a medieval monastery had taken Carlyle's fancy, and he drew upon it in order to contrast the monks' reverence for work and heroism with the sham leadership of his own day.

Carmichael, John Wilson (1799-1868), After; Printed by Robor limited, Lancing, England
Merchant Shipping by J.W. Carmichael. Limited edition print.
Marine Collectors prints. . Color reproduction. Initialed and numbered in pencil. 56 x 86.3cm. 22 x 34 inches. .J.W. Carmichael's natural affinity for the sea and his skill in depicting fine architectural detail combine perfectly in this marine view of multiple ships at sea.John Wilson Carmichael was born at Ouseburn Newcastle upon Tyne on 9 June 1799 the eldest of the three children of the shipwright William Carmichael and his wife Mary née Johnson the daughter of a mariner. During his teens he spent three years at sea working on a ship that sailed between Spanish and Portuguese ports. He then followed his father’s trade and was apprenticed to the ship builder Richard Farrington & Brothers of North Shore Newcastle. The Farringtons were also cabinet makers upholsterers gilders and carvers and were engaged in the cultural life of the town. As a result they recognised and encouraged Carmichael’s artistic talent Joseph Farrington buying him his first box of watercolours. In time he also became a friend and pupil – however informally – of Thomas Miles Richardson Senior the leading artist in Newcastle at the time. From the early 1820s he collaborated closely with the architect and developer of Newcastle John Dobson working up his perspective drawings into arresting watercolours complete with figures. His work is represented in numerous public collections including the National Maritime Museum Greenwich and the V&A; and Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre Hartlepool Museums and Heritage Service Laing Art Gallery Newcastle Shipley Art Gallery Gateshead Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens and York Art Gallery.
