The second page continues with two more columns of similar books. The third page also in two columns is headed 'Shelf of Books. - left hand of fire-place'. A triangular section to the upper right blank margin lost & supplied no text affected. Some expected age-toning & soiling. A Good copy. Large headpiece 4.3 cm x 15 cm. Large initial capital letter 'W'. 30.3 cm x 22 cm. <br/><br/>Charles best known today as the instigator/leader of the unsuccessful Jacobite uprising of 1745 in his effort to restore an absolute monarchy to the United Kingdom which culminated in defeat at the Battle of Culloden essentially signaling the end of the Jacobite cause. This broadside issued at the apex of the rebellion highlights the extent of Charles' belief in his claim to the throne for in it he declares the parliament at London to lack legitimacy; next he brands traitor & rebel all who attend said parliament; and finally he declares the "pretended union of these Kingdoms now at an End." A very rare survivor of this tumultous time of British history this broadside is known in only 6 copies per ESTC none on this side of the pond. unknown books

17 May 1911; on letterhead of 14 Waverton Street Berkeley Square W. London. Chambers is not mentioned in Dame Nellie Melba’s entry in the Oxford DNB. She met him in London in 1895 and their affair ended for unknown reasons in 1904. It is clearly the ‘notorious’ affair in whose fame Chambers ‘rejoiced to the last’ according to Somerset Maugham’s devastating assessment of the man in ‘A Writer’s Notebook’ 1946. Harry de Windt gives a markedly kinder account of Chambers in his ‘My Note-Book at Home and Abroad’ 1923. The recipient of this letter is Osma Mary Dorothy Allhusen 1877-1965 wife of Conservative MP Augustus Henry Eden Allhusen 1867-1825 of Stoke Court Buckinghamshire. 2pp 12mo. Nineteen lines of text. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once. Signed ‘C Haddon Chambers’. His reply has been delayed by absence from town. ‘It is extremely kind of you to invite me to Stoke Court & I should so much like to come to you - but alas! I shant be in England on 8th July according to present arrangements.’ He suggests a visit ‘sometime in the Autumn’. Large Thick Folio 14" x 9.25" handsomely bound in the original contempoaray polished speckled calf the spine with raised bands over cords double ruled in gilt red morocco lettering label bgilt central gilt ornamental devices in the compartments. 2 frontispiece and engraved title xii 120 2 458 2; viii 733 4 Table plates pp. An unusually fine survival still retaining its original binding. The text-block and illustrations all crisp and clean and unpressed the binding still strong and in a a very pleasing state of preservation. An especially pleasing copy. FIRST EDITION OF THE MOST COMPLETE OF ALL WORKS ON KING CHARLES I OF ENGLAND AND THE KINGDOM. Charles I 1600 – 1649 was King of England Scotland and Ireland from 27 March 1625 until his execution in 1649.<br />Charles was born into the House of Stuart as the second son of King James VI of Scotland. After his father inherited the English throne in 1603 he moved to England where he spent much of the rest of his life. He became heir apparent to the kingdoms of England Scotland and Ireland in 1612 upon the death of his elder brother Henry Frederick Prince of Wales.<br />After his accession in 1625 Charles quarreled with the English Parliament which sought to curb his royal prerogative. He believed in the divine right of kings and was determined to govern according to his own conscience. Many of his subjects opposed his policies in particular the levying of taxes without Parliamentary consent and perceived his actions as those of a tyrannical absolute monarch. His religious policies coupled with his marriage to a Catholic generated antipathy and mistrust from Reformed religious groups such as the English Puritans and Scottish Covenanters who thought his views too Catholic. He supported high church Anglican ecclesiastics and failed to aid continental Protestant forces successfully during the Thirty Years' War. His attempts to force the Church of Scotland to adopt high Anglican practices led to the Bishops' Wars strengthened the position of the English and Scottish parliaments and helped precipitate his own downfall.<br />From 1642 Charles fought the armies of the English and Scottish parliaments in the English Civil War. After his defeat in 1645 at the hands of the Parliamentarian New Model Army he fled north from his base at Oxford. Charles surrendered to a Scottish force and after lengthy negotiations between the English and Scottish parliaments was handed over to the Long Parliament in London. Charles refused to accept his captors' demands for a constitutional monarchy and temporarily escaped captivity in November 1647. Re-imprisoned on the Isle of Wight he forged an alliance with Scotland but by the end of 1648 the New Model Army had consolidated its control over England. Charles was tried convicted and executed for high treason in January 1649. The monarchy was abolished and the Commonwealth of England was established as a republic. The monarchy was restored in 1660 with Charles's son Charles II as king.<br />Archbishop William Laud whom Parliament beheaded during the war called Charles a "mild and gracious prince who knew not how to be or how to be made great." Charles was more sober and refined than his father but he was intransigent. He deliberately pursued unpopular policies that brought ruin on himself. Both Charles and James were advocates of the divine right of kings but while James's ambitions concerning absolute prerogative were tempered by compromise and consensus with his subjects Charles believed he had no need to compromise or even to explain his actions. Withal a handsome VG copy of this title. 4 302 16 pp. Numerous mispaginations throughout. Double-page engraved frontispiece by William Marshall "designed for this edition". So controversial was it that Parliament commissioned an answer with John Milton's Eikonoklastes. Early 20th-century half calf marbled boards all edges gilt by Zaehnsdorf. Light wear to extremities; a few occasional pale stains lacks terminal blank generally fresh. FIRST EDITION third state with correct pagination in quire G. Originally attributed to Charles I the bibliographer Falconer Madan believes it was written by John Gauden who probably included some authentic writings of the king. Though the title-page reads 1648 it was published on 9 February 1649 ten days after the king was beheaded in the aftermath of the English Civil War. The famous allegorical frontispiece by William Marshall depicts Charles I as a Christian martyr. The work was so successful in its portrayal of the king that at the Restoration a special commemoration of the king on 30 January was added to the Book of Common Prayer. pp. [2], 55. Signatures: A^(4)(-A1) B-G^(4) H2. There are two settings of this same edition known (no priority as to first issue, and many copies contain mixed formes). This setting has the title page with a small version of the royal arms; and on the verso a large, full page, engraved version; and the last line of D4v begins: as ever'. **Short contemporary Ms. note on title: 'This p'lament began Apr. 16, 1640 & was dissolved May 5 folowing.' Small 4to. 190 mm. Later blue boards binding; leather title strip lettered in gilt. Clean and attractive copy. Charles I (1600-1649), King of Great Britain and Ireland. In his early disputes, arguments, and battles with the Scots, tried a new tool. He resolved to call an English parliament, and to ask for means to enable him to make war effectually upon Scotland. The discovery of an attempt made by the Scottish leaders to open negotiations with the king of France led him to hope that the national English feeling would be touched. In the meanwhile the English privy councillors offered him a loan which would enable him at least to gather an army without parliamentary aid. The Short parliament of 1640 was opened by the King on 13 April with a few words indicative of the gravity of the situation, the task of more fully setting forth the royal wishes and intentions being devolved upon the Lord Keeper (Baron Finch). Under Pym's leadership the Parliament showed itself disposed to ask for redress of grievances as a condition of a grant of supply, and it subsequently refused to give money unless peace were made with the Scots. On 5 May Charles dissolved parliament by means of this Declaration. Getting money by irregular means, he proceeded to push on the war, and formed an Irish army to join the mutinous and un-warlike Royal army. Terrified and exasperated Englishmen, believed that this army would be used in England to crush their liberties. The Scots knew that the opinion in England was in their favour, and they had already entered into communication with the parliamentary leaders. On 20 Aug. they crossed the Tweed, defeated part of the royal army at Newburn on the 28th, and soon afterwards occupied Newcastle and Durham. Charles's money was by this time almost exhausted, and he was obliged to summon the English peers to meet him in a great council at York, as there was no time to get together a full parliament. The great council met on 24 Sept. It at once insisted on opening negotiations with the Scots, and sent some of its members to London to obtain a loan to support the army during the progress of the treaty. Charles had now agreed to summon another parliament, and the negotiations opened at Ripon were adjourned to London. Armorial bookplate of Franciscus Antonius Comes de Stürgkh 18th-century Austrian Graf to front pastedown period inscription on front flyleaf. <br/><br/>Defensio Regia pro Carolo I Defense of the Reign of Charles I which was published anonymously in November 1649 was probably sponsored by Charles II who is thought to have paid a hundred pounds for its printing. The work called for European rulers to unite against the new English republic and place Prince Charles on the throne. This work represents a reversal of Salmasius earlier views since it supported the divine origin of kingship defended the powers of a king and blamed the attacks of the Revolution on the English people. Salmasius studied at Paris 1604-06 and at Heidelberg 1606-09. During his years at Heidelberg he discovered the Palatine manuscript of the Greek Anthology. In 1610 his commentary on Solinus Polyhistor was published. His enormous learning especially in ancient languages- he was fluent in Hebrew Arabic Syriac Persian and Coptic as well as Greek and Latin- led to offers from several universities. In 1631 he became professor at Leiden and stayed there for the remainder of his life except for one year 1650-51 at the Swedish court where he was a guest due to the fame his Defensio Regia pro Carolo I had brought him. He returned to Leiden soon after the publication of Miltons reply Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio in 1651. [B. & A. Elzevir] hardcover

Originally attributed to Charles I but according to Madan composed by John Gauden Bishop of Worcester who probably included some authentic writings of the King and may even have collaborated with him. The first edition was in print on the day of Charles I's execution on 30 January 1649 followed by many editions with various erroneous dates and publishing details. The Eikon reviews the course of the civil wars from the calling of the Long Parliament in 1640 to Charles's imprisonment at Carisbrooke Castle in 1647 and defends the King's policies. It is part political memoir and part spiritual autobiography presenting Charles as the defender of both Church and State. Written in a moving straightforward style in diary form the Eikon combines irenic prayers urging forgiveness of Charles's executioners with a justification of royalism. The poem "Majesty in Misery" said to have been written by the King at Carisbrooke first appeared in the 1676 edition of Perinchief's Life of King Charles but this is the first edition of the Eikon in which it was printed. B correctly paged except for B4 which has "21" instead of "12" D4v last line begins "as"; tiny piece torn from the upper margin of the last leaf just touching the line border. An excellent copy in modern glazed blue boards spine with a gilt label. Title-page with an early inscription "This pliamt sic. i.e. "parliament" began April 13. 1640 & was dissolved May 30 following." First edition widely circulated and possibly written by John Finch Baron Finch of Fordwich; variations in the type settings appear. Charles was constrained by a shortage of funds in his campaign against the Scottish covenanters in 1639-1640; he convened the "Short Parliament" in hopes of obtaining additional taxes asserting among other things "how dangerous it was to lose the least minute of time lest thereby those of Scotland should frame their parties with forraign States." The plain spine with raised bands and the title in later gilt in the second panel. The binding is rather worn on the edges corners and joints but the boards are still firmly attached. Front free endpaper removed. Early signature of Edw. Roberts on the top margin of the frontispiece. Book stamp of J.H. Rudemare at the foot of the titlepage possibly the Abbé Rudemare.
