La traduction est de J.F. Dauxion-Lavaisse.Ces mémoires firent grand bruit en Angleterre. Ils concernent Fréderick, duc d’York, second fils du roi Georges III, qui fut l’objet d’un grand scandale avec procès public en 1809. York avait fait carrière dans les armes comme commandant en chef de l’Armée anglaise. Il fut victorieux dans bien des batailles avant de capituler sur le Zyp. En 1809, l’administration de la guerre, livrée depuis longtemps à un système de corruption organisé par sa maîtresse, mistress Clarke, fut sévèrement condamnée par la Chambre des communes et le duc d’York dut démissionner. Son innocence fut cependant reconnue par une partie du Parlement et York fut réinstallé dans ses fonctions en 1811. Débauché, souvent saisi par les créanciers, peu aimé de ses soldats, il fut populaire pour ses opinions anti-catholiques. Les mémoires de la Clarke sont un réquisitoire par une persécutée “éprise de justice et de vérité.”

Edition originale de la traduction donnée par Duxion-Lavaisse de ces mémoires de la maîtresse du duc d'York, commandant en chef de l'armée et second fils du roi Georges III. L'auteure fut poursuivie pour ses écrits dans lesquels elle mettait sur la place publique l’histoire de sa liaison avec le prince et des commissions militaires occultes perçues par celui-ci pour régler les dettes qu’il avait contractées. Emprisonnée neuf mois pour diffamation, elle s'exila en France à sa sortie et mourut à Boulogne-sur-Mer en 1852. Quelques rousseurs et piqûres. Exemplaire entièrement non rogné.
