The list begins with 'Miss Murray £263' and ends with 'Mr Simmons 101'. The penultimate entry is for 'Mr Wild Prompter 103'. It also includes 'Miss Millan 261' and 'Mr Mattocks 157'. ‎Theodore Martin Scottish poet and author. Autograph Letter Signed 'Theodore Martin' intended as a pass for the inspection of the Shakespeare bust and pictures of 'the old celebrities of the English stage' in the Garrick Club.‎

‎13 July 1871; 31 Onslow Square London. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition aged and worn but with slight water staining and damage to blank area at foot of second leaf. The male recipient is not named. The letter begins: 'My dear Sir If you present the enclosed to the porter of the Garrick Club I have no doubt all the Art Treasures of the Garrick will be open to your inspection. The Shakespeare bust of which Professor Owen spoke must I think be in the Entrance hall on the left hand side.' Were not Martin leaving for Wales the following morning he should have had great pleasure in 'acting as cicerone to the pictures of the old celebrities of the English stage.' In a postscript he suggests that there may be a 'rule as to showing the pictures only in the early part of the day' but thinks that there 'may be no prohibition' before three o'clock. 13 July 1871; 31 Onslow Square [London]. unknown‎

An unusually forthright document in the staid world of Georgian banking the letter begins: 'Sir We have received the favor of your Letter dated yesterday with much surprize not only as it informs us of a praemium being offer'd with an acceptance of your house but also as it seems to intimate that it has been done with our concurrence - we can assure you Sir that your Letter is the only information we have had upon this subject - the bill it is true is in our hands and we have Lord St John's directions to deliver it to a person who is to pay a Sum of money into his account but we are perfectly ignorant from what that money is to arise'. ‎Thomas Day Autograph Letter Signed 'Thos: Day' to Edmund Taylor inc. original unpublished forty-line manuscript poem by Day entitled 'Lines address'd to Windsor' in which he has 'spit his spite' on the town.‎

‎25 March 1810; Oxford Street. The work of a cultured and witty man but not by the author of 'Sandford and Merton' who died in 1789. While possible authors include the 'Mr. Thomas Day solicitor Woburn Bedfordshire' whose death at the age of 47 on 18 February 1824 was reported in The Times 5 March 1824 and the Thomas Day who lived around this time at Montague Street Russell Square the most likely candidate considering the references to 'Romney' and 'Wyatt' is the Thomas of 'DAY William and Thomas Day of No. 95 Gracechurch-street in the city of London oilmen' who went bankrupt in 1841. The item consists of a 4to bifolium letter: recto of first leaf; poem: verso of first and recto of second leaf; address: verso of second leaf. With postmark and fragment of red wax seal. Text clear and entire except for two words of the poem lost on the breaking open of the seal. Aged creased and ruckled with contemporary repairs including the highly unusual neat sewing of a 9 cm closed tear. Day writes that 'the reading of a letter from you cannot console me for the loss of you. - Thayer Street my Dear Sir has lost all its charms now - I would not give a pin for it - I should not care if it was burnt down. - I hate to go near it. - I hate Windsor too for decoying you away. I will come down & set fire to it ere long to drive you up to town again. I have spit my spite against it in a copy of Verses.' In a postscript he writes that 'Mr. Sewell Chandler Romney John Romney 1786-1863 engraver &c are all well. Mr. Wyatt Matthew Cotes Wyatt 1777-1862 painter and sculptor is removed from his late lodgings the people of the house say they dont know where to they believe into the Country'. The poem begins 'Oh! Windsor how shall I in language tell The Grief and Envy Thou hast in me raised; I hate Thee now tho' once I loved Thee well And often have Thy various beauties prais'd.' Describes the 'various charms' of Windsor 'a Royal castle's pride' 'A Terraced hight sic' 'Thy Forest's ample shade' and how these do not 'alleviate my loss . Since Thou hast stol'n my Valued Friend from me.' Concludes: 'May Fate torment You to the end of Time Or till you send my Valued Friend to me.' 25 March 1810; Oxford Street. unknown‎

‎Letter One: on letterhead of the Gallery of Illustration 14 Regent Street London. 24 December 1863. Letter Two: 'Sat. S. C.'. Letter One: 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. With decorative letterhead in red. Very good on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear Old DD' and 'E. D. Davis'. He realises that Davis is in 'a precious state of mind' and will only send 'a few lines to exchange domestic greetings of kindliness & good fellowship from the circle of Balham to the Square in N'Castle - the waters of the Thames mingle with those of the Tyne'. A few words put to music follow with a lighthearted quotation from the novel 'Valentine Vox': 'Mynheer Vandunk who never got drunk - sipped brandy & water gaily "cold without" Railly!' He concludes: '"Cold Without & Warm within" Wishing you & yours all the enjoyment due at this festive demise of the old year 1863 & continued prosperity with the birth of the New Year 1864'. Postscript: 'Have you or Mrs D. been robbing Noah's Ark We'll try to consume it - the contents I mean. Not the ark or hamper. signed T G R'. The words 'Business Bad' alone on reverse of second leaf. Letter Two: 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. Diagonal section cut away from both leaves with loss of text; otherwise good on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear Old DD'. He begins by discussing 'a great big chesnut mare' which has been 'placed at my disposal for paying her keep': 'I don't know anything of her fencing qualities but shall find out in a day or so - al about it'. He is 'waiting till the end of the hunting season' before writing: 'I don't consider this a letter only an intermezzo or parenthesis'. He has been 'suffering from pains in the back beginning with lumbago & in the legs to such an extent that I can scarcely walk erect - Whats the remedy My Northern Esculapius - Eh' He concludes: 'When are you coming to town You'll miss all the parts if you don't come soon - We must! We shall! We Will! have one more run. And become gay. And become gay become gay to make our vitals good!!!' He ends with a few bars setting these final words to music and signs 'T'. An outstanding copy of one of the most important studies of London's Underground prior to WWII. Written by the Operating Manager of London's Undergound, it presents a comprehensive and highly detailed account, with valuable illustrations of early equipment, procedures and scenes. ‎Edinburgh / London: Printed by J. Robertson and H.D. Symonds; and volume 2 printed for W. Skirving by J. Robertson 1793. Hardcover. Good. 8vo. TWO WORKS IN ONE VOLUME. Robertson's Edition containing 2 volumes within this one edition: "An Account of the Trial of Thomas Muir Esq. Younger of Huntershill before the High Court of Justiciary at Edinburgh on the 30th and 31s days of August 1793" with an appendix; and "The Trial of the Rev. Thomas Fyshe Palmer Before the Circuit Court of Justiciary Held at Perth on the 12th and 13th September 1793 on an Indictment for Seditious Practices" also with an appendix. Thomas Muir the Younger of Huntershill 1765 - 1799 was a Scottish political reformer and the first political prisoner transported to Australia. Muir was sentenced to 14 years transportation for the the crime of sedition; for campaigning for parliamentary reform and for distributing copies of Thomas Paine's 'The Rights of Man'. His trial became one of the great sensations of the day; he was one of the group known as the 'Scottish Martyrs' who were sentenced in Scotland in 1793-4. Antipodean Books Maps & Prints ABAA; Thomas Fyshe Palmer 1747–1802 was an English Unitarian minister political reformer and convict. When agitation for political reform began in 1792 Dundee became one of its centres in Scotland. A society called the 'Friends of Liberty' was formed in 1793. One evening in June 1793 Palmer attended a meeting when George Mealmaker weaver in Dundee brought a draft of an address to the public which he purposed circulating as a handbill. Palmer revised it modifying it to a complaint against the government for war taxation and a claim for universal suffrage and short parliaments. The address was sent to be printed in Edinburgh in July 1793. The authorities were alarmed and decided to meet an anticipated revolution in time; and in the belief that they were attacking a revolutionary leader Palmer was arrested in Edinburgh on 2 August on a charge of sedition as the author of the document. Wikipedia Hardcover in good condition. 8vo. Marbled blue black red and off-white paper boards show wear with tears and scuffs to the edges and parts of the cover. Most of the red has worn away. Quarter leather binding is also worn with rubbing and scratches and chips in the leather. Leather spine bears gilt bands and raised peach-color label with gilt lettering and decorative border. Ex-libre label at bottom of spine. Pages are yellowed with some foxing throughout. Bookworm tracks and tunnels are present from the front pastedown to page 12 of the first volume and from page 155 through the back of the back paste-down of the second volume. Worm holes are burrowed through some of the words but the content is still mostly understandable except possibly for the last number of pages. Binding solid and pages are complete as no leaves are loose. Frontispiece is missing. There is a crack on the inner front hinge however exposing the binding thread. Though secure pages show the three specific indentations of where the thread binds the leaves to the spine and can be seen plainly within the gutter. Some leaves bear minor creasing and staining though the print remains legible. Volume 1 is 160 pages with appendix. Volume II is 195 pages and also includes an appendix. There is also a small hand-written note in ink approximately 3.5" x 2.75" circa late 1700's believed to possibly be written in French laid in. An intriguing piece of history. ‎Napoleon 'Copy of the Transparency exhibited at Ackermann's Repository of Arts During the Illuminations of the 5th and 6th of November 1813 In Honour of the Splendid Victories obtained by The Allies over the Armies of France at Leipsic‎

‎Date place and publisher not stated. London: R. Ackermann 1813. On a piece of good wove paper roughly 415 x 260 mm. Dimensions of engraving 180 x 220 mm. On aged paper and with the margins of the leaf trimmed. Laid down along the right hand margin runs a strip of blue paper 30 x 410 mm which it may be possible for a professional restorer to remove. This edges the border of the print which is clear and entire and overlaps a few letters of the text. Neatly coloured in sombre tones. Beneath the print is the title which ends 'at Leipsic and its environs.' and beneath the title is an eleven-line section of text headed 'THE TWO KINGS OF TERROR.' beginning 'THIS Subject representing the two Tyrants viz. the Tyrant BONAPARTE and the Tyrant DEATH sitting together on the Field of Battle'. Death is seated on a cannon with one foot on a pile of cannonballs and the other on a broken French eagle facing a dejected Bonaparte seated on a drum. In the background the massed ranks of the allies their four flags flying drive the retreating French from the field. The final four-line paragraph reads 'The above description of the subject appeared in the Sun of Saturday the 6th of November. These pointed comments arose from the picture being transparent and from a Circle indicative of the strength and brotherly union of the Allies which surmounted the same composed of gas of brilliant brightness.'
