‎1913. New York: The Century Company 1913. 1 page undated ads. Original light green cloth decorated in dark green and black with dust jacket. First Edition of London's prizefighting tale about "a white backwoods giant who would rather read Browning than slug his opponents" Sinclair prompted by his coverage of the Johnson-Jeffries fight in Reno. The very title of this book indicates London's preoccupation with the concept of the "brute" which underlies the social behavior of men and animals alike. London had recently left Macmillan in a dispute over royalties but would find Century to be much less patient or understanding; he ultimately had to beg his former publisher to take him back. THE ABYSMAL BRUTE includes a frontispiece by Gordon Grant. This copy is in the second binding state which is identical to the first except for color and is in fine condition. The three-color pictorial dust jacket shows a man carrying a rifle with a buck slung over his shoulder; this jacket is near-fine with a couple of small chips at the top corners of the spine not affecting print. With 18 full-page color illustrations by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. Association copy inscribed by the author on the half-title page "To Elinor Glyn:- My most popular but my own heart goes out to some <span class="match">of</span> my sociological screeds. Jack London Mar. 1 1911." The recipient Elinor Glyn was a British novelist and scriptwriter who specialized in romantic fiction which was considered scandalous for its time. Her first book The Visits of Elizabeth was published the same year as London's first book. She later moved to California and became one of the first female writers of movie screenplays. She popularized the concept of the It-girl and had tremendous influence on early 20th-century popular culture and possibly on the careers of notable Hollywood stars such as Rudolph Valentino Gloria Swanson and especially Clara Bow. In near fine condition with light shelfwear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Signed first editions of this classic title are scarce. The Call of the Wild is "one of the first American novels to examine the quest of the pioneering individual who breaks away from the sheltered environment of civilization and is romantically compelled to find freedom in nature. The distinctive cover bears the description "Armed Services Edition: This is the Complete Book—Not a Digest." Includes dedication to Charmian London wife of Jack London the mate of the Snark on title page. Scarce copy not found in this solid condition nor available. <br />Editions for the Armed Services Inc. was a non-profit established by the Council on Books in Wartime. The small reprints were handpicked by American publishers of General Trade Books librarians and booksellers specifically for American soldiers abroad during World War 2. The compact size was specifically designed and printed for soldiers because they fit easily into a cargo pocket of a uniform. Easy to carry easy to read. Normally the paperbacks were passed around and shared between individuals and units so much so they commonly were tattered ripped in half or destroyed. According to London Cloudesley Johns was the first person who ever wrote him about his work offering praise of the stories "To the Man on Trail" and "The White Silence" in the January and February 1899 issues of the Overland. The resulting friendship lasted until London's death see The Book of Jack London 1899 p. 277ff. "If Jack had no mentor but himself Cloudesley had Jack London - a pugnacious mentor who seldom pulled his punches. Jack's advice was born of his own experience and to Johns as to many other aspiring writers he gave of it freely. They met on several occasions. During London's writing of The Sea Wolf in 1903 Johns came up to Piedmont and the two men sailed up to the mouth of the Sacramento River on Jack's sloop Spray. There they played chess swam shot ducks and mudhens fished talked and wrote. 'The more I see of Cloudesley the more I like him' Jack wrote. 'He is honest and loyal young and fresh understands the discipline of a boat and is a good cook to say nothing of being a good-natured and genial companion'" Walker and Reesman p. 15. First Edition which consisted of 26420 copies. In this prizefighting tale Joe Fleming tries to convince his fiancée to accept his career by inviting her to watch him box a precursor to the "Rocky" movies: the fight blow-by-blow occupies almost the entire second half of the book. Jack had long cherished a cult of the perfect male body. He had pictures taken of himself in bathing costume flexing his muscles and shadowboxing. He took snapshots of George Sterling posing on the beach wearing nothing. Obsessive descriptions of male Anglo-Saxon strength grace and sexuality began to creep into his novels particularly THE GAME written in the summer of 1904. In that romance of prizefighting the hero expressed Jack's vanity about his own body -- his skin was fair as a woman's his face like a Greek cameo his stance a perfection of line and strength yet with a deep smooth chest and "muscles under their satin sheaths -- crypts of energy wherein lurked the chemistry of destruction." Sinclair This is a handsomely but oddly bound book with symbols of death and of fate on the binding on the endpapers and throughout the text. This copy has on the copyright page a hand-stamped two-line notice in type that is 3/32" tall some copies have it in smaller type and a few have no such notice -- precedence unknown though S&M speculates that copies with no stamp were first.
