The certificate is signed by the chairman deputy chairman and registrar the chairman being Joseph James Redding.The certificate reads: "The London Court of Arbitration. A the Annual Meeting of this Court held on the 11th day of June 1925 it was unanimously Resolved That the cordial thanks of the Members of the London Court of Arbitration be accorded to Mr. H. L. Symonds for the valuable services rendered by him as Deputy Chairman from June 1921 to June 1923 & as Chairman of the Court from June 1823 to June 1925. His high standard of conduct in the Chair and his invariable courtesy greatly assisted in the work of the Court & have endeared him to all its Members".The London Court of International Arbitration is the oldest arbitral body in the world dealing with international disputes founded in 1892.One issue of 'City Press' for October 10th 1925 is loosely inserted in which are references to the LCIA. In the original cloth binding. Externally smart with light marks to the cloth. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Spine is faded. Internally firmly bound. Boards heavily worn head and foot of spine chipped. Very minor scattered foxing. Good plus. In a brown half morocco and cloth slipcase. The county of Middlesex essentially London was the heart of radical politics in England at the time of the Revolution and the greatest pro-American feeling was found in the merchants and working classes of the metropolis. The colonists often appealed directly to Middlesex for support. These works contain petitions relating to the American colonies dating from June 1774 to March 1778 including petitions regarding the Quebec Act in which the people express their concern over the encroachment of Catholicism and French influence in the colony. Likewise it includes the text of a letter from John Hancock to the mayor of London dated September 1775 expressing a hope for peace between Britain and the colonies. Adams notes that these two titles are often found bound together sometimes with other publications of the Council. The petition of the freeholders of Middlesex County concerns the John Wilkes case. Wilkes ran for Parliament and was elected as a radical candidate for Middlesex but was arrested and imprisoned shortly thereafter for seditious libel. Wilkes spoke out against the British war against the American colonies and his opposition to the Crown was a rallying point for the American cause. ESTC T108621 T108605 T43921. Presumably the second printing having first been published in 1871. 8vo publisher's dark red cloth good copy with cloth restoration to spine light repairs to inner hinges mild general wear. Printed library slip on pastedown from the Paignton Spiritualist Church and with their old purple stamp a couple times. Quite a bit of light erasable pencil underlining and marginal marks. 402 pp plus index ads and "The Press versus Spiritualism by Investigator" 12 pp followed by a few more pages of ads. Includes correspondence some of it sceptical from T. H. Huxley George Henry Lewes Camille Flammarion Edwin Arnold T. Adolphus Trollope and other notable figures of the time. Six sub-committees had investigated the claims of spiritualism by attending séances and reported their findings. The report was heavily criticised by the scientific community as being of no scientific value. This was due to the fact that half of the committees "saw really nothing" and only the second committee had reported successful "presumably spiritualistic" phenomena. However this conclusion was criticised as being based on unsupported statements from unreliable witnesses. The report was dismissed by influential newspapers. For example The Times described the report as "nothing more than a farrago of impotent conclusions garnished by a mass of the most monstrous rubbish it has ever been our misfortune to sit judgement on." The fifth committee had investigated the medium Daniel Dunglas Home but "nothing occurred at any of the meetings which could be attributed to supernatural causes. J. Burns hardcover
