This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.Contains: Volumes 3-7 Volume 8 No. 30 15-16 23-27; printed in 1902-1910. "The Connoisseur originally subtitled 'An Illustrated Magazine for Collectors' was born in September 1901. It survived nearly the entire course of the twentieth century before passing away in February 1992. It was a British magazine but it was also published in America. As the first editor acknowledged in the first edition a magazine 'devoted to any and every object that is or can be collected' was a new thing. The editor's mother also contributed to first edition helping to create an image of The Connoisseur as a real person with her poem L'Envoi. In this she images the connoisseur as a child on the beach searching for beautiful shells and explains the function of the magazine by paraphrasing Keats' Endymion 1818: 'Things of beauty Joys for ever'. The editor himself J. T. Hebert Bailey 1864-1914 was sure that his new enterprise would be a success due to the significant 'increase in the interest in and desire for things old and beautiful and rare.' Five items the first four printed and the fifth an ALS. Four of them in good condition with light signs of age; the fifth Item Two below somewhat aged and worn. An account of this abortive scheme – first proposed in 1758 – is to be found on pp.424-427 of Joseph Priestley's 'Historical Account of the Navigable Rivers Canals and Railways of Great Britain' 1831. The scheme finally failed in 1832 when the bank of Sir George Duckett see Item Five below failed and he became bankrupt. Only the Stort Navigation was completed. ONE: 'London and Cambridge Junction Canal. Data upon which the Company have founded their Calculations. June 1813.' Printed by 'S. Goswell Printer Little Queen Street London.' 7 1pp. 8vo. On two loose bifoliums. Most of the first page is taken up with a 'Rough Sketch of the London and Cambridge Junction Canal. The dotted Line represents the intended Canal and Branch. The black Lines are the present Navigations.' The text is divided into seven sections: 'I. - Length of the Canal' 'II. - Tolls' 'III – Present Trade' 'IV. - Expense of Conveyance' 'V. - Estimate' 'VI. - Profits' 'VII. Future Profits'. Four lines have been scored through though still legible in the final section. TWO: 'Plan Explanatory of the London and Cambridge Junction Canal.' Undated circa 1811. Bifolium the central two pages of which carry a 31 x 30 cm. map 'Engraved by G. Mills 51 Nelson Sqr. FIVE: Autograph Letter in the third person from 'Mr Duckett' i.e. Sir George Duckett 1777-1856 MP for Plympton Erle the 'Lieut. Col. Duckett M.P.' of Item Three above to 'Sir John Harrington sic'. From Upper Grosvenor Street London; 24 June 1813. 2pp. 12mo. Duckett has 'consented to act as Treasurer pro tempore with a view to take the concern out of the former Solicitor's hands and to put it upon a better footing'. The person he sent 'to collect percentages and distribute information' was 'told by Sir John he has already paid 1 Per Cent' but since Duckett 'cannot find any memorandum amongst his papers of Sir John having paid Mr Duckett would feel most obliged to Sir John if at his earliest convenience he would acqiuaint Mr D. To whom & when he paid it that it may be regularly credited to his Acct.' Harington has docketed the document: '26 Jun. 1812. Pd. by Messrs. Birch L Chambers'. London and India Docks original documents 1889 - 1898
London: Port of London 1889. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. This is a bound collection of original documents concerning the staff and workings of the London and India Docks during the period 1889 to 1898. The booklets are bound in a folder which is title by hand to the front cover "General Staff Regulations and Superannuation Deed" and has "The Chief Clark Manager's Office" in pen to the ffep. Below this is "Presented by Digby Davies Esq" in a later pencil annotation. One of the booklets is stamped "Port of London Authority Library" to the rear cover. The folder measures 24 × 16cm and is half leather. Five booklets are bound in and five are loosely inserted. The booklets form an interesting collection of the network of docks in East London used to import and export goods all over the empire. The collection consists of: 1. London and India Docks Joint Committee: General regulations for the Guidance of Staff with an Appendix containing the Rules of the Superannuation and Guarantee Funds 1889. 12pp 11pp. Printed on one side only to allow for additions and amendments there are a couple of handwritten notes. 2. Part II of the above "being the instructions of the Directors to the Superior Staff". 9pp. 3. Instruction Book for the Guidance of the Police 1889. A smaller 23 page booklet instructing the dock police in their duties courts prisoners saluting the Marshall Hall Method in Drowning etc. 4. Instructions for Messengers 1891. 4pp. Must be smart punctual uniformed etc. If caught accepting a gratuity or smoking then dismissal. 5. Rules and Regulations for the Labour Staff. 7pp. Qualifications scales of pensions etc. Then there are five loosely inserted booklets: 1 & 2. Two copies of Supperannuation for the London and St Katherine Docks Company dated 1886. 3. Another copy of the General Regulations for 1889. 4 & 5. Further copies of the no 3 for 1895 and 1898. Two of the booklets are signed by an F H Habben believed to be an author on the history of London street names. Condition: Generally good for age. The documents themselves remain in strong readable condition some tanning to the pages and wear where they are bound in. The folder is rather bumped and rubbed. <br/> <br/> Port of London hardcover
