The photograph is of the group of four singers with an inscription on the top third. The inscription reads To Don--Thanks for your wonderful hospitality. Luck Always. Jimmy Sacca The Hilltoppers also signed Jimmy Sacca by his head. The reverse side is a listing of The Hipptoppers records that were available exclusively on London Records. Sacca was the lead singer of the Hilltoppers a vocal quartet that notched 29 hit singles from 1952 to 1957. Born James W. Sacca Jr. he earned a football scholarship to Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green where he and two fellow students Seymour Spiegelman and Don McGuire formed a vocal trio that sang at local gathering spots. In 1952 Billy Vaughn a local piano player wrote a ballad called "Tryin'" and joined the group to make a record of the song which was sent to a local radio station. Listener response was so good that Randy Wood owner of the Dot Records label signed the group which was then named the Hilltoppers. The song became a hit eventually reaching No. 7 in the Billboard magazine charts and No. 5 in the Cashbox Magazine listings and the group traveled to New York City to appear on 'The Ed Sullivan Show'. Appearances on many other TV variety shows followed. The group’s rising popularity was interrupted when Sacca was drafted in 1953 and was stationed in Okinawa for two years. In 1956 the Hilltoppers toured Great Britain. In 1965 he formed a new Hilltoppers group and recorded until 1973. Sacca who performed with the group for the last time in 1976. The Hilltoppers were an American popular music singing group. Originally the group was a trio formed at Western Kentucky State College now Western Kentucky University Bowling Green Kentucky. The original members were three students; Jimmy Sacca born July 26 1929 Lockport New York died March 7 2015 in Lexington Kentucky; Donald McGuire born October 7 1931 Hazard Kentucky died September 7 2018 in Lexington; and Seymour Spiegelman October 1 1930 – February 13 1987. Spiegelman was born in Seneca Falls New York and died in New York City. They took their name from the nickname of the Western Kentucky athletic teams. They later added a pianist Billy Vaughn April 12 1919 – September 26 1991. Vaughn was born in Glasgow Kentucky. Vaughn was eventually to become famous in his own right as an orchestra leader. In 1952 they recorded a song "Trying" written by Vaughn. A local disc jockey sent a copy to Randy Wood at Dot and he agreed to distribute the record. It became a top 10 hit single. They went on to record a number of additional hits until their break-up. Their 1953 release "P.S. I Love You" sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc. They continued to record and became a popular act appearing on the Ed Sullivan show dressed as they always were wearing their beanies and college sweaters. The group had 18 hit songs from 1952 to 1957 the biggest of which was Gordon Jenkins and Johnny Mercer's P.S. I Love You. Other top ten hits for the Hilltoppers included Only You And You Alone in 1955 and Marianne in 1957. Billy Vaughn who sang baritone for the group went on to a long and illustrious career in the music business. First he became music director for Dot and came up with the hit Melody of Love. He was the arranger/conductor for many records released on the Dot label by artists such as Pat Boone The Fontane Sisters Gale Storm and others. He also recorded hits of his own with The Shifting Whispering Sands Parts 1 & 2 Raunchy and Sail Along Silvery Moon. Vaughn eventually had more hits on the pop charts than any orchestra leader in the rock era. Other members of the Hilltoppers continued to work in the music business with Dot Records in one capacity or another. Jimmy Sacca was a distributor for Dot in New York City before going on to perform in clubs starting in 1967. Wood moved the Dot label to Hollywood in 1956 before he sold it nine years later and formed a new label called Ranwood. London Recordings or London Records and London Music Stream is a British record label that marketed records in the United States Canada and Latin America for Decca Records from 1947 to 1980 before becoming semi-independent. The London name – as London American Recordings often shortened to London American – was also used by British Decca in the UK market for releases taken from American labels which British Decca licensed.
