London, Jack
A JACK LONDON TYPED LETTER SIGNED to FELLOW SOCIALIST H.C. TUCK proposing a PUBLIC READING of his SOCIALIST-THEMED STORY "THE STRENGTH OF THE STRONG".

Sonoma County December 22 1910. 1910. Very good. - Typed letter signed by Jack London. More than 200 words typed on his 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch personalized "Saxon Bond" watermarked paper with his stamp in the top left corner "Jack London / Glen Ellen / Sonoma Co. Cal.". Jack London writes to his friend fellow Socialist H.C. Tuck proposing a future lecture in defense of Socialism. His Socialist themed short story "The Strength of the Strong" is about to be published in Harper's Magazine. The story London writes is "a reply" to "Kipling's attack in parable upon Socialism. The Bee-Hive parable". He suggests that he can read his story "at Dietz Opera House and throw myself open to questions afterwards. This could make an evening". He says that his preference would be to hold the event on Sunday January 1st. "Of course and as a matter of course there will be no charges on my part." Signed boldly in a large hand "Jack London". There are very short tears to the edges of a few folds one of which has been reinforced with clear archival document tape. There are a couple of tiny faint holes at the intersection of the folds. Very good.

1910 was a significant year for Jack London 1876-1916. In 1910 he began work on his mansion on his ranch called the Wolf House. The house was destroyed by fire in 1913. Jack London's daughter Joy was born to him and his second wife Charmian London on June 19 1910. Tragically the infant died only 38 hours later due to birth complications. His novel "Burning Daylight" was published in that year.

H.C. Tuck was the editor of "The World" which was owned and published by the Oakland California branch of the Socialist Party. In September 1911 he was jailed for allegedly libeling the Oakland police chief by suggesting he was responsible for the killing of a young girl while she was in prison. A demonstration was held in support of Tuck.
Sonoma County, December 22, 1910.
