The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping rubbing and wear along with some beginning fraying. There is a small tear and nicking to both spine ends. The text pages are clean and bright. "In 1910 when the story was written London had become a famous writer but he was worried that he had exhausted his ideas. The Abysmal Brute was based on one of several plot outlines he bought from Sinclair Lewis an admirer of London who was at the beginning of his career. Original light green cloth decorated in dark green and black with dust jacket.<br/> <br/> First Edition of London's prizefighting tale about "a white backwoods giant who would rather read Browning than slug his opponents" Sinclair prompted by his coverage of the Johnson-Jeffries fight in Reno. The very title of this book indicates London's preoccupation with the concept of the "brute" which underlies the social behavior of men and animals alike. London had recently left Macmillan in a dispute over royalties but would find Century to be much less patient or understanding; he ultimately had to beg his former publisher to take him back. THE ABYSMAL BRUTE includes a frontispiece by Gordon Grant. This copy is in the second binding state which is identical to the first except for color and is in fine condition. The three-color pictorial dust jacket shows a man carrying a rifle with a buck slung over his shoulder; this jacket is near-fine with a couple of small chips at the top corners of the spine not affecting print. Regretfully most of the films have been lost as no prints are known to have survived except his excellent adaptation of Burning Daylight 1914 in which Jack London himself made an appearance. Laid into this copy are two first edition pamphlets promoting two of Hobart Bosworth’s London films. The first pamphlet is entitled Bosworth Inc. Presents The Sea Wolf by Jack London in Seven Reels. Los Angeles: Bosworth Inc.: 1913 8 pp. Illustrated with scenes from the movie. 8vo single sheet folded to form 8 pp. Light horizontal creases where folded and tiny chips at spine fold. Includes a plot synopsis and Cast of Characters: the second pamphlet is entitled Bosworth Inc. Presents John Barleycorn by Jack London. Directed by Hobart Bosworth. Progressive Motion Picture Co. 1914 4 pp. Illustrated with scenes from the movie. 8vo single sheet folded to form 4 pages. Light horizontal creases where folded; otherwise fine. With decorations by Chas. Edw. Hooper and illustrations by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. This copy's last date imprint is June 1907 making it a 14th printing. This book is in Very Good- condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have edge wear bumping rubbing and wear. The front cover includes a rectangular pictorial pastedown which has noticeable wear and several chips missing. There are spots of ground-in dirt and discoloration to the book covers. The text pages are clean though somewhat toned due to the acid content of the paper. There is a previous owner's ink stamped name and address on the front endpaper. . This copy has been illustrated throughout by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. A previous owner's inked gift notation a dated 1914 and an inked number 20. There is an ink stamped former name and address on the front pastedown page as well. "The story opens at a ranch in Santa Clara Valley California when Buck is stolen from his home and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. He becomes progressively more primitive and wild in the harsh environment where he is forced to fight to survive and dominate other dogs. By the end he sheds the veneer of civilization and relies on primordial instinct and learned experience to emerge as a leader in the wild. London spent almost a year in the Yukon and his observations form much of the material for the book. The story was serialized in The Saturday Evening Post in the summer of 1903 and was published later that year in book form. The book's great popularity and success made a reputation in London.
