For Sale by Auction by Messrs. Debenham Tewson Farmer and Bridgewater At the Mart Tokenhouse Yard near the Bank of England in the City of London. On Tuesday the 28th day of June 1898. Two unbound bifoliums stapled together. Eight pages on four leaves each roughly seventeen inches by eleven wide. A corrected proof stamped at head of first page 'PROOF NO.' A frail survival of a significant document in London topographical history. Aged and worn with several closed tears. A few manuscript emendations notes and additions in different hands. For example concerning a right of way 'Messrs. Debenham can ascertain this from Mr. Pinder Simpson 20 Old Burlington St. W. the Collector'. 'CB' who comments on another note 'Is this wanted' can be identified from another note: 'I have <> these Particulars. C. Bramley 13 Old Square May 24th. 1898'. Sir Thomas Spencer Wells 1818-97 was surgeon to the queen's household. According to the Victoria County History of Middlesex Golders Hill House was built between 1754 and 1796 and was enlarged for Wells in 1875 to the designs of E. F. Clarke. It was acquired by the London County Council in 1898. After its destruction during the Second World War the grounds were preserved as Golders Hill Park. For Sale by Auction by Messrs. The letter begins by drawing the recipient's attention to an 'enclosed statement relating to Emanuel Hospital. The principals involved are of great public interest and apply to every educational endowment throughout the kingdom They involve: - The confiscation of property The arbitrary removal of Governors against whom no complaint is alleged. Entire disregard of the charter of foundation The absolute prohibition of the gratuitous education of the poor except as the result of competitive examination'. 21 September 1955; on letterhead of Victor Gollancz Ltd. 4to 2 pp. Postscript ends abruptly 'I have read innumerable books on Italy <.>' suggesting a page lacking. Good on lightly aged and creased paper. An interesting letter shedding light on Gollancz's attitude to the practice of sending out advance copies of books for review. Addressed to 'My dear Daniel'. Further to a report he has received from 'Hilary' his nephew Hilary Rubinstein regarding a conversation with George 'at John Coates's party' Gollancz assures him that there is no 'personal reason' why he is no longer receiving 'a stream of advance copies'. 'I have never known how people regard the receipt of personal copies: and I am always torn between the desire to send them and the feeling that the recipient will be bored or even misinterpret the reason for which they are sent.' He has been 'specifically and somewhat sharply asked . to drop the practice' by 'at least two people of influence . during the last year'. 'My reluctance is based on the uneasy feeling that the recipient may feel a sort of obligation to write something favourable about a book he doesn't like'. He will resume sending advance copies 'everything except highly specialised books' 'immediately'. Postscript expresses surpise that 'apparently you didn't care for Kubly's book on Italy. 13 February 1897; on Adam and Charles Black 'Survey of London' letterhead. 12mo 2 pp. Seventeen lines of text. On lightly aged and creased paper. Attractive arts and crafts letterhead. Sending his 'mosts profound sympathy in the danger which threatens Chelsea'. He will sign 'the paper . with the greatest of pleasure' although he anticipates 'very little good as a possible result'. Suggests a time at which the paper can be sent to him. He doubts whether it will be 'any consolation' but 'the London County Council are at this moment allowing the most beautiful suburb in London namely Frognal to be ruined by the erection of hideous barracks that they call flats. Their architect says that he can do nothing in the matter.' Besant's signature has a diagonal line through it apparently in the same ink and it is not clear whether this is a stylistic flourish or a cancellation by Besant possibly on the letter being returned to him with the papers referred to in the letter. First TLS: 3 January 1928. Second TLS: 11 December 1928. Both on letterheads of Cassell & co. Ltd. La Belle Sauvage London EC4. ALS: 18 December 1928 on letterhead of Idlehurst Sevenoaks. Publishing history does not get more vivid than this. See Flower’s obituary in The Times and Wells’s in the New York Times. The three items in good condition lightly aged. All three folded once and signed ‘Newman Flower’. First TLS 3 January 1928: 1p 12mo. He writes that although ‘a very apologetic letter from Mr. Wells of Harpers’ has ‘cleared the air entirely’ ‘a reply from Holt’ received at the same time is not very satisfactory’ and ‘in view of the fact that Cassell’s and Harpers will be coming together again it would perhaps be as well not to do anything at present’. Second TLS 11 December 1928: Headed ‘CONFIDENTIAL’. He regrets to inform Marchant that he ‘had a very aggressive interview with Mr. Wells of Harper’s in my Club this afternoon . he as good as called me a liar and was so abominably rude that I have decided that I will have no further dealings whatever with Harper’s’. Deleted sentence follows: ‘I have to-day written and cancelled the arrangement with them over “The Real Hellâ€â€™. There are no books ‘coming along in which Harper’s and ourselves are sharing but if so I want to make it clear that I am not prepared to proceed with them’. He does not think this will ‘hamper’ Marchant but asks him not to bring Cassell’s ‘any books in which we must be associated with Harper’s and that you will not offer Harper’s any book of Cassell’s’. He concludes: ‘It takes a great deal really to put me out of temper but I will not be subjected again to such rudeness as I had to put up with from Mr. Wells this afternoon in my own Club.’ ALS 18 December 1928: Begins: ‘Dear Sir James / Have sent you a brace of birds from the chase. Shot on Saturday.’ He wishes the Marchants ‘better health in 1929’ hoping that it will be one of Marchant’s ‘Years of good fortune’. An interesting item casting light on the way business was conducted in the world of nineteenth-century newspaper proprietorship. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage. The recipient evidently a fellow newspaper proprietor is not named and the letter is signed ‘William Ingram’. Begins: ‘My dear Sir / I have talked over the matter of purchase of your papers with my brother and he is of the opinion that our deal ought to include the 3d gardener’s paper as the two have always been worked together - he thinks ten years purchase less 10% would be a fair price - the 10% would cover all commission and cost of audit examination etc - this would give you a clear 9 years’ purchase’. In Ingram’s opinion the recipient ‘would do well to realise as in these days of never ending competition the older one gets the more difficult it is to tackle the worry of these incessant attacks’. At the time of writing Molesworth was serving as First Commissioner of Works in Lord Aberdeen's coalition government. In the year of his death Aberdeen would appoint him Colonial Secretary. The letter begins: 'My dear Merivale Last November I moved for the enclosed return and since then I have spoken to Pal i.e. Viscount Palmerston about it who promised that it should be made. Do you know any thing about it' Molesworth asks when the return will be ready and whether Merivale author of "Lectures on Colonization and Colonies" 1841 has 'in the Library of the Colonial Office a Report by Dr Andrew Smith see Wikipedia of the expedition for exploring Central Africa from the Cape of Good Hope in 1834. Whitehall Place London. 25 July 1848. 2pp 12mo. In fair condition on aged paper with slight damage at head repaired with archival tape and thin strip from stub of mount adhering to one edge. He asks Owen to 'alter or add to the paper sent herewith in any way you please so that it may harmonize with the report you have drawn up & represent the meaning you may intend to convey'. He will 'call at the College in the course of the day & affix my signature to the completed document'. Until 1856 when he became Superintendent of the Natural History Department of the British Museum Owen was conservator and Hunterian professor in the Royal College of Surgeons. From the distinguished autograph collection of Richard Hunter son of Ida Macalpine whose collection of 7000 books relating to psychiatry is in Cambridge University Library. Macalpine and Hunter had a particular interest in the illness of King George III and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' 1969 suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'. He explains that in the previous year these were 'framed by Dr. Smith' and that her application 'came just too late'. What he does in the following year 'depends upon many considerations' but he will not forget her if there is an opening.
