Edited by the great 'Republican' Thomas Hollis, with additions and corrections by Joseph Robertson, this edition includes: Memoirs of the Life of Algernon Sydney; Discourses Concerning Government; Letters of Algernon Sydney, taken from Thurloe's State Papers; The Protector's Advice to Algernon Sydney; Letters of Algernon Sydney, taken from the Sydney papers; Letters of A. Sydney to Henry Savile, Ambassador in France; The Trial of A. Sydney; The Apology of A. Sydney in the Day of his Death; and A General view of Government in Europe. This is an important book in the history of the ideas that founded the American republic, but what is perhaps most interesting about this copy are the manuscript notes and annotations written, in a careful small hand, in America, during the Civil War (1863). A few of these struck our eye, and we're glad to reproduce a few selections here: "I have lately undertaking to read Algernon Sydney on government. There is great difference in reading a book at four and twenty and at eighty eight. As often as I have read it and fumbled it over, it now excites fresh admiration that this work has excited so little interest in the literary world. As splendid an edition of it as the art of printing can produce, as well as for the intrinsic merits of the work, as for the proof it brings of the bitter sufferings of the advocates of liberty from that time to this, and to show the slow progress of moral, philosophical, political illumination in the world, ought to now be published in America" - John Adams to Thomas Jefferson 17 September, 1823. ".the danger in America. arises from (1) the indifference of the people to the character of their deputies; (2) the disinclination of good men to go as deputies; (3) and the inclination of bad men to go as such. The rottenness of our law making bodies has reached such a point that if it shall not soon be cured it can not longer endure." - 1863. "Among the causes, which have brought the USA to their present unhappy condition, may be reckoned, as a leading one, the predominance in their councils of mere municipal lawyers. The low morals and the crass ignorance (of these) are not equal to the work of government, filched by them from a blindly confiding people. A profession proverbially selfish and dishonest can not produce statesmen, however fecund it may be of politicians. The conduct of government is the work of statesmen - of unselfish, honest, high-hearted, great-minded men = that class has disappeared and has given way to small country lawyers whose minds exercise only upon petty squabbles of the neighborhood, incapable of grasping the vast concerns of a nation. Bad as this is, there is something worse. and that is that the profession of the law is every year sinking lower in ignorance and in contempt, while at the same time it is rising in power." - 1863. London Hospital Whitechapel. Pamphlet on 'State Registration of Nurses' undated; leaflet on the Nurses'' Insurance Society headed with date of 1911 act; syllabus undated. The three items are from the papers of Winifred M. S. Parry of Plumstead who was enrolled as a probationer in 1912. ONE: 'State Registration of Nurses'. Pamphlet in small print 'Reprinted by kind permission of the Editor of The Nineteenth Century and After'. Printed by 'SCHOOL-PRESS 5 Rupert Street London E.' 24pp. 8vo. Stapled in brown printed wraps naming the authors as 'The Hon. Sydney Holland Chairman London Hospital Miss Eva C. E. Lückes Matron London Hospital'. Internally in fair condition on lightly aged paper in worn and chipped wraps with rusted staples. Arguing against the proposal and beginning: 'The State Registration of Nurse is brought forward by its advocates as a sort of panacea for all the real and imaginary grievances against nurses and we are asked to believe that the laudable desire to protect the public from the incompetent will be effectually accomplished by this means.' The conclusion sums up the argument: 'Registration could be no guarantee even of technical fitness. It cannot be any guarantee of character: - that being so the whole bottom of the balloon comes out and it would be perfectly and absolutely useless. It wound not only be useless but a positive danger because it would be a false guarantee. It would lull the public into a false sense of security in leading them to think that if they engaged a Registered Nurse they would get a good Nurse. A false security is worse than a known danger. It would be useless to Nurses and so they have found out in the State of New York where but a very small proportion of Nurses have Registered.' Undated circa 1838. 'London: Published by T. Dawson 29 Bedford St. Covent Garden.'. The caption ends '. a Soldier who desires to kill his General let him do it now. Here I am!' Dimensions of print roughly 13 x 17 cm. On original grey paper windowpane mount 22 x 27.5 cm. Engraved label 4 x 12.5 cm beneath the print with small remarque-style illustrations. Aged and spotted with slight wear to the print. An unusual and attractive piece of Napoleonic iconography a full-length image of the deposed Emperor of the French characteristically attired on a beach with his hand on a rock looking out to a sunset at sea. When held up to the light the Emperor is surrounded by a large group of enthusiastic soldiers one of whom is waving a tricolor. Scarce. No reference to this item on the web. S.S.The British Queen Coloured lithographic print captioned 'Dawson's Diorama No. 4. The British Queen a first rate Steem sic Ship which on holding it up to the light changes to her Magesty sic Queen Victoria attired in her Robes of State.'
Undated but between 1839 and 1844. 'London: Published by T. Dawson 29 Bedeord sic for 'Bedford' St. Covent Garden.'. Dimensions of print roughly 13 x 17.5 cm. On original grey paper windowpane mount 22 x 28.5 cm. Engraved label 3 x 12.5 cm beneath the print with small remarque-style illustrations of the ship and the queen. The print itself is good although aged and a little worn and spotted; the spotting and aging to the margins and mount is a little heavier. Attractive and unusual item the image changing when held up to the light. The ship is depicted sailing on choppy seas and the young queen seated with drapery around her on a verandah with stone balustrades and a landscape behind. Scarce. The only reference to this item on the net is to a copy in the National Maritime Museum. The British Queen was the first ocean steamship ever built. She made her maiden voyage in 1839. In 1841 she was sold to the Belgian government and in 1844 she was broken up. Dioramic prints were introduced in London in 1821 by Joseph Daguerre. Undated, but between 1839 and 1844. British Association for the Advancement of Science 22 Albemarle Street London. 28 November 1882. 2pp. 12mo. Bifiolium. Mimeographed document in purple ink. The date Ramsay's name and Bonney's signature are added in Bonney's autograph. The Association's council 'acting under the powers conferred upon them by the General Committee in accordance with their Report have appointed a Committee . to carry into effect the recommendations of the portion of the Council Report accepted by the General committee'. A 'List of the Committee' is on the second page the eleven members headed by 'Mr. H. G. Fordham Secretary' and featuring 'Mr. Francis Galton' and 'Mr. A. Ramsay'. Laid down beneath the list is a printed slip reading: 'That the Council be empowered to appoint a Committee as recommended in their report adopted by the General Committee on August 23 in order to draw up suggestions upon methods of more systematic observation and plans of operation for local societies together with a more uniform mode of publication of he results of their work. It is recommended that this Committee should draw up a list of local societies which publish their proceedings.' Ramsay a geologist was the editor of the short-lived periodical 'The Scientific Roll'. In fair condition on aged and worn paper with slight damage at head from breaking of seal causing loss of the 'SC' in the heading 'PRICES OF <SC>OTTISH STOCKS.' Table in small print subdivided into sections on Banks Insurance Companies Railways Miscellaneous and English Railways with columns for: Advanced Capital; Annual Dividend; When Payable; Return per Ct. to Purchaser; Description of Stocks; Shares; Present Selling Prices. The ten-line report at the foot of the page begins: 'The state of our Share Market during the last month affords little scope for remark the transactions being few in number and limited in amount. On comparing the above quotations with those of our Circular of 15th ultimo we observe that the following alterations have taken place: - .'. Addressed on reverse to 'Thomson Hankey Junr. Esq 7 Mincing Lane London'. With two red postmarks 24 and 26 July 1843 and tiny red wax seal of unicorn's head. Text clear and complete on aged and lightly-spotted paper with minor wear to extremities. Headed 'Under the Patronage of the Nobility and Gentry.' 48 lines of text including positive quotations from the Observer Christian Advocate Sunday Times and Albion and Star. Describes ten aspects of the exhibition lettered A to K including the conveyance of the ore 'to the surface by a --- G --- POWERFUL HYDRAULIC MACHINE first in kibbles through a perpendicular shaft and lastly in waggons drawn upon an inclined plane'. Ends 'This is the only Exhibition of the kind in Europe and it is pronounced by the first Scientific Men in the Kingdom to be the most wonderful production of art ever witnessed. --- ADMISSION 1s. Open from 10 in the Morning till 9 in the Evening. - N.B. Every Person will see the Model regularly worked.' The following notice appeared in the Theatrical Observer in 1834: 'Hearing that the celebrated Copper Mine at Exeter Hall was soon to close went to view the Model worked by real water — fancied myself wandering in the recesses of the earth every part being so accurately described — quite delighted!'
