A Plan of the City of Prague Capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia with the Prussian Camp
London: The London Magazine 1757. unbound. Miniature map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 4.75" x 6.75".<br/><br/> This unusual plan of Prague was published by The London Magazine just a few months following the 1757 Battle of Prague. Oriented with north facing left it depicts the position of the two armies with a key in the bottom margin locating the positions of the artillery reserves batteries and mortars of the Prussian Army on the map. The Battle of Prague part of the Seven Years' War was fought between the Prussians and the Austrians for control of Prague and its surroundings. Although Frederick The Great from Prussia eventually succeeded in forcing the Austrians to retreat he was unable to take the city due to the heavy losses. A beautiful title cartouche adorns the bottom right corner. Most likely engraved by Thomas Kitchin. The map is in very good condition with narrow bottom margin. "The London Magazine or Gentleman%u2019s Monthly Intelligencer" was founded in 1732 as a rival to the popular Gentleman's Magazine. It is England's oldest cultural and literary journal. The magazine has published a wide range of writers from Wordsworth Shelley Keats T.S. Eliot W. H. Auden Evelyn Waugh among others. The first two installments of Thomas De Quincey's "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater" appeared in the 1820 edition of the journal. Today after nearly three centuries The London Magazine continues to publish some of the best writings from London and beyond.<br/><br/> The London Magazine unknown books

The National Association for Freedom 500 Chesham House 30/32 Warwick Street London W1R 5RD. No date dating from between 1975 and late 1978. A scarce piece of political ephemera from the turbulent days of 1970s Britain. The only other copy traced at the British Library where it is tentatively dated to 1977. The pamphlet certainly dates from before the renaming of the organization as the Freedom Association in late 1978. Guardian journalist Marina Hyde’s assessment of the organization as a ‘charmless libertarian pressure group’ seems to be supported by the fact that they failed to pick up on the slang connotation of their acronym NAFF and after renaming because of a fear of confusion with the National Front of their new acronym FA. Two items in good condition. ONE: Publicity pamphlet. 8pp unnumbered 12mo. Stapled. Outer covers in red with lion logo and motto ‘FOR FREEDOM’ on front with name of organization. Six inner pages in blue ink. Some underlining in blue ink but so carefully done that one might mistake it as part of the printing. List of officers on reverse of first leaf; then full-page ‘Introduction’ by Lord De L’Isle ‘those freedoms which we have championed and which should be the right of all men are being taken from us’; page headed ‘Work of the NAFF’ listing seven ‘immediate tasks’; page headed ‘The Free Nation’ ‘our widely read national fornightly sic paper’; page with Ross McWhirter’s fifteen-point ‘Charter of Rights and Liberties’; page with sections headed ‘What Can I Do’ ‘Many things have gone wrong in Britain because the vast majority of responsible citizens have allowed militant minorities to call the tune.’ and ‘Subscribers’. The Navy Office London. Manuscript document addressed to ‘Mr: Turnpenny’ from the Navy Office in the matter of ‘the Hire of the Pulteney Advice Boat’ regarding a request to delay payment of a bill signed by six Commissioners of the Navy.
30 December 1748. Navy Office Seething Lane City of London. The War of Jenkin’s Ear had ended a few months before and Daniel A. Baugh ‘British Naval Administration in the Age of Walpole’ Princeton 1965 describes the sorry state into which the Navy Board had fallen at this point. 1p foolscap 8vo. On recto of the first leaf of a bifolium the verso of the second leaf being addressed ‘To / Mr Turnpenny / Navy Office’ and docketted ‘Commissioners of Navy to Mr Turnpenny’. In poor condition and urgent need of archival repair. The laid and watermarked paper is flaking away and part of text including a couple of the signatures is lacking. The date and place of the letter - ‘Navy Office 30: December 1748’ - has been completed by being pieced together with some flakes. The text reads: ‘We have received your Letter of this date desiring the Bill made out for the Hire of the Pulteney Advice Boat may remain in this Office till some Dispute between the Owners are sic settled; And acquaint you the Bill was yesterday delivered to Mr: Tolcher. / We are / Your affectionate Friends’. Seven signatures of Commissioners of the Navy follow including ‘Will Corbett’ ‘R Osborn’ ‘Edwd Falkingham’ ‘Jacob Acworth’ and the Tintinesque ‘Rd Haddock’. 30 December 1748. The three items in fair condition lightly aged and worn with light damp staining to the Prospectus. ONE: Prospectus. 4pp. tall 8vo. Bifolium. First page headed 'Contractors to the French Government Naval Military and State Authorities. The New Asbestos Company Limited. Incorporated under the Companies Act 1862 to 1886 whereby the liability of each Shareholder is limited to his Shares. Capital - - £120000 Divided into 30000 Shares of £4 each. Shares £4 Each = 100 francs have been adopted to suit the convenience of French applicants. Issue of 25000 Shares .' The prospectus follows a list of the Company's officers and begins: 'This Company has been formed to acquire carry on as a going concern develop and extend a very important Asbestos industry thoroughly established and in complete working order known as the "Société Française des Amianes" of Tarascon.' It includes descriptions of 'Asbestos Properties' 'viz. sixty-two in Italy of an area of over 700 acres and six in France of an area of about 8 acres producing some of the finest Asbestos in the market and the possible output of which is of so extensive a character that several hundred workmen could at present be profitably employed in extracting it from the mines .' 'Buildings etc.' 'Factories' 'Goodwill etc.' 'Depots' 'Agencies' 'Discoveries and Patents' and 'Gold Medals etc.' The final page is printed lengthwise with title in customary manner and includes the company's 'Memorandum of Association' in small print. TWO: Perforated application form. 1p. 8vo. THREE: Paper 4pp. tall 8vo bifolium headed 'Issued with the Prospectus of The New Asbestos Company Limited.' The Refectory Club Mayfair London. Three items of club ephemera: publicity booklet application form and notice. With Typed Letter Signd from club secretary David Mallett regarding theatre historian Maqueen-Pope’s desire to become a member.
Mallett’s letter dated 4 October 1955; on letterhead of The Refectory Club 10 Tilney Street Park Lane W1 London. The other three items undated but slighty earlier in date. From the Macqueen-Pope papers. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Interesting London ephemera: the plans for the Refectory Club were clearly ambitious but there is little to be gleaned about it and it is unclear whether it even opened. Zinkeisen and her sister Dora are the subject of a 2022 monograph by Philip Kelleway Emma Roodhouse and Nicola Evans. The four items in good condition lightly aged but with rust staining from a paperclip. Folded for postage. ONE: Typed Letter to MP signed ‘D Mallett’ but with ‘For Secretary’ typed beneath this. 1p 4to. Begins ‘We have been informed by Mr. Nathan that you would like to become a member of our Club. We shall of course be honoured to accept you but regret that we must ask you to apply formally for membership on the enclosed application form. After you have completed this we should be grateful if you would forward it to Mr. Nathan for proposal.’ Information regarding fees follows. TWO: Illustrated Printed stapled publicity booklet. 7pp 16mo. With three photographs of interiors Dining Hall Lounge and Common Room together with reproduction of drawing of the Dining Hall on the cover. ‘The mediaeval Dining Hall is architecturally unique with its finely vaulted ceiling supported by columns and pilasters of the utmost delicacy. / Curved wall panels provide the perfect setting for exquisite murals by Miss Anna Zinkeisen. The distinguished artist has captured the atmosphere of the period and portrayed it ith touches of subtle humour and gaiety. . The Lounge pannelled in oak with rich period furnishings is a pleasing combination of things old and new. The old has been made to serve again in an unusual recessed long bar. / The pine-pannelled Common Room dominated by a fine old refectory table is reserved for private dinner parties. .’ The architect is named as H. Hubbard Ford the ‘Decor’ is by Dickeson & French Ltd and the murals are by ‘Miss Anna Zinkeisen’. THREE: Notice printed in red. 1p 12mo. Headed ‘The Refectory Club. / The Club will be open to Members on and after 3rd May 1955.’ Gives details of opening hours bar hours and restaurant hours and of membership fees. Typed in red at foot: ‘This applies to the first 500 members. For those joining later the rate will be / FIVE GUINEAS PER ANNUM’. FOUR: Printed ‘Application for Membership’. Biographical note: born in Nice in 1921 Colette Monceau was a student of Charles Dullin in the second half of the forties and played in several plays during the same period. At the end of the 1950s she took courses at Pierre Foix's school of graphology in Paris and worked in particular on dance as part of the exam for the Group of Consulting Graphologists of France. Having become a consultant graphologist she also teaches this technique. Particularly interested in the writings of Louis Jouvet and Sarah Bernhardt she wrote three works that remained unpublished as well as several articles. It constitutes a thousand files devoted to actors and actresses as well as personalities from varied backgrounds. Colette Monceau née Nancey 1921-2016. Notice biographique : née à Nice en 1921 Colette Monceau est élève de Charles Dullin dans la seconde moitié des années quarante et joue dans plusieurs pièces à cette même période. À la fin des années cinquante elle suit les cours de l’école de graphologie de Pierre Foix à Paris et travaille notamment sur la danse dans le cadre de l'examen du Groupement des graphologues conseils de France. Devenue graphologue-conseil elle enseigne également cette technique.
