‎Report On Spiritualism of the Committee of the London Dialectical Society Together With the Evidence Oral and Written and A Selection From the Correspondence‎

‎London: Longmans Green Reader and Dyer 1871. First edition. Cloth. Good. 9" by 6". None. The first and only edition of this scarce report on spiritualism by the London Dialectical Society. The first edition of this report of the London Dialectical society into the claims of spiritualism. The society were formed in 1867 to debate questions of ethics metaphysics and theology.  In 1869 the London Dialectical Society formed a committee appointing 33 members whose aim was to investigate the phenomena alleged to be spiritual manifestations and to create a report. This book is the report from that investigation. With correspondence to the society including letters from Thomas Huxley who rejected involvement as 'if any body would endow me with the faculty of listening to the chatter of old women and curates in the nearest cathedral town I should decline the privilege having better things to do'.   Other rejections declining involvement were from G H Lewes and Lord Lytton.  Notable members of the society include Edward William Cox Charles Maurice Davies and Alfred Russel Wallace. The committee members attended seances and reported their findings. A scarce work which provides an insight into attitudes towards spiritualism at the end of the nineteenth century.  In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound. Splits to the head of joints and loss to the cloth at the head and tail of spine. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are bright with occasional light spots to pages. Good Longmans, Green, Reader and Dyer hardcover‎

‎Vero Kemball Shaw (1851-1921), author of books on dogs and animal husbandry [George Routledge & Sons, London publishers]:‎

‎Vero Kemball Shaw writes to his publishers 'Messrs Geo Routledge & Sons'. Autograph Letter Signed 'Vero Shaw' concerning the production of his books 'The Encyclopaedia of the Kennel' and 'The Encyclopaedia of the Poultry Yard'.‎

‎56 St John's Park Mansions Highgate N. London '3 of July 1913'. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium on grey paper. In good condition lightly aged. The letter would appear to concern both of the books which Shaw published with Routledge in 1913: 'The Encyclopaedia of the Poultry Yard' and 'The Encyclopaedia of the Kennel'. He begins by explaining that he is finally sending in 'title page & dedication which I should have sent in earlier had I not been awaiting Mr Ts permission to dedicate the book to him. I only received his letter this afternoon.' He next turns to the illustrations regarding which he was 'under the belief that you had arranged with Mr Fowler to endeavour to obtain some of dogs for you'. Shaw cannot find any individuals 'to pay the price asked for illustrations of their animals. Whether it is that times are bad or that there are now so many illustrated papers in existence I dont know but the fact remains that I have been unable to get the price.' He will be seeing Fowler and feels 'sanguine' that he 'can get some advertisements. When I last saw him he was waiting for some specimen pages.' He asks for 'pulls of all the Poultry blocks you have in hand' and undertakes to 'see that the number is completed'. The author of this letter is not to be confused with the cricketer Vero Shaw 1854-1905 latterly Vero Shaw-Mackenzie. 56 St John's Park Mansions, Highgate, N. [London] '3 of July [1913]'. unknown‎
