Notes; Includes bibliography and index. Summary; Chalke and Dunworth hundreds are in south-west Wiltshire on the Dorset border. The parishes of Chalke hundred were united by being part of Wilton abbey's estate before the Norman Conquest but most of the hundred is homogeneous. Long and narrow parishes lie north and south across the river Ebble and are characterized by extensive chalk downs. Until farmsteads were built on the downs in the 19th cen-tury nearly all settlement was in small riverside villages. From the Reformation to the 19th century the earls of Pembroke owned most of the eastern parishes. Sheep--and-corn husbandry and more recently arable and dairy farming was the pattern of agriculture in all the parishes except Semley where there is a remarkable survival of common pastures. Dunworth hundred is largely in the Vale of Wardour and land in most of its parishes belonged to the Barons Arundell of War-dour as successors to Shaftesbury abbey. It is an area of broken landscape and mixed farming in which only Tisbury has grown larger than an ordinary village. Except at Tisbury there has been little manufactur-ing in the area but Portland stone has been extensively quarried at Chilmark Teffont Evias and Tisbury and greensand stone has been quarried at the Donheads. Partly because of its stone Dunworth hundred is notable for its secular buildings. The castle at Wardour is the only one to survive in Wiltshire; Fonthill Abbey in Fonthill Gifford was the most remarkable house of its day in England. Among the many farm-houses of local stone which survive from the Middle Ages is Place Farm at Tisbury which was frequently visited by the abbess of Shaftesbury and has the largest medieval barn in England. Except for Sedgehill parish and part of Donhead St. Mary parish both hundreds are in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty: the exceptions are in a Special Landscape Area. Apparently the second part of two., with 10 of the twenty etched plates. A famous Victorian satirical work, illustrated by Cruikshank. First Edition. Cohn 176. George Cruikshank (1792-1878) was a humorist of the school of Hogarth, and is considered by some to be one of the best that Britain has produced. He was the son of a Scottish painter, Isaac Cruikshank, and apparently his talent was such that he could draw as soon as he could write. From the beginning he was concerned with satire. At a young age he achieved public notice by painting theatre backdrops (the first was for Drury Lane Theatre, London). In the early 1820s he made etchings for the pamphleteer William Hone, but his political caricature work was soon overtaken by his work as a book illustrator. Life in London (1821) was followed by Tales of Irish Life (1824), and then a series of further books at an ever increasing rate. His best known work was for Charles Dickens, starting with Sketches by Boz and reaching its zenith, perhaps, with Oliver Twist. Among his large number of other illustrated books were a Grimm's Fairy Tales (1827), a Pilgrim's Progress and Paradise Lost, and seven novels by Harrison Ainsworth. Despite his large oeuvre, more than 15,000 drawings in his lifetime, Cruikshank was never well off. He required financial assistance from friends in 1866 (led by Ruskin), and late in life relied on a modest pension from the civil list and a Turner annuity from the Academy. **PRICE JUST REDUCED SW3‎

‎Large and elaborate coloured engraved plan measuring approx. 1270mm x 1010mm (50.0 ins x 39.75 ins), folding in 20 panels to approx. 320mm x 210mm (12.5 ins x 8.0 ins); housed in original printed cartridge envelope with self-sealing flap (short tear in flap), A REMARKABLY CLEAN, NEAR FINE COPY. This is an engraved and coloured plan of the Crystal Palace prepared for the intended sale at auction of the buildings and grounds in 1911 (see below). The retaining envelope is printed 'PLAN OF THE CRYSTAL PALACE 1851-1911. Solicitors: Messrs Janson Cobb, Pearson & Company, 22 College Hill, E.C.; Receiver and Manager: Mr. Ernest I Husey (Messrs Jackson, Pixley & Co., Chartered Accountants, 58 Coleman Street, E.C; Auctioneers: Mr. Howard Frank (Messrs Knight, Frank & Rutley), 20 Hanover Sq, London W; and Mr. John Roy Lancaster (Messrs Horne & Co), 85 Gresham Street, E.C.' The plan in well executed and colour-coded to indicate the various leases and tenancies involved. It shows the scale and local context of the magnificent building, together with its world-famous gardens and grounds, including the tiered sculptural terraces, the patios, and the renowned lakes and fountains. Key features such as the Flying Machine, the Maze, Brunel's Polygonal Water Towers, the Lower Lake area housing Waterhouse Hawkins' recreations of dinosaurs (still present today) and the Sports Grounds are clearly highlighted. HISTORICAL CONTEXT. After the Great Exhibition of 1851, the Crystal Palace was re-erected in a considerably enlarged form in 1854 at Sydenham in South London. During the next half century it continued as a major metropolitan tourist attraction attracting visitors from all over the world to marvel at the building, its contents and gardens, and to witness a wide variety of entertainment including music, acrobatics, circuses and fireworks. By the turn of the century, however, the novelty was wearing thin and the number of visitors declined to the point where in 1911 the Palace was declared bankrupt and placed in the hands of a receiver. 'On 28 November it was to be sold by auction, to be offered in one lot as a going concern. This was a fateful period in its history. There was grave danger that it would pass into the hands of the developers. Every jerry builder within striking distance was eager for the moment when he might be in a position to swoop down on the beautiful grounds and reduce them to terms of bricks and mortar. But that ultimate indignity was not to be. The Earl of Plymouth produced £230,000 to buy the Palace as a going concern; at the same time the Lord Mayor of London opened a fund to purchase the Crystal Palace for the nation, and to reimburse Lord Plymouth. This was completed in 1913 and the Crystal Palace was saved.' [A.R. Warwick: The Phoenix Suburb (1972)]. During the Great War the revitalised Palace served as a Royal Naval base (HMS VICTORY VI). At the end of hostilities it became for a short time the home of the Imperial War Museum and then reverted to tourism with exhibitions of early flying, pioneer television, dirt-track racing, music festivals, dog and cat shows, dancing and fireworks. In this way it continued until completely destroyed by the tragic fire of 30 November 1936 - the end of a great era. IT IS UNCERTAIN HOW MANY OF THESE ELABORATE PLANS WERE PRODUCED, BUT THE NUMBER CANNOT HAVE BEEN GREAT. GIVEN THAT £230,000 (VERY APPROXIMATELY £7M BY TODAY'S STANDARDS) WAS REQUIRED TO OBVIATE THE NEED FOR SALE, THE NUMBER OF INTENDING BIDDERS MUST HAVE BEEN FEW INDEED. IN ANY CASE IT IS UNLIKELY THAT MANY COPIES SURVIVE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS VIRTUALLY UNOPENED STATE COMPLETE WITH ORIGINAL ENVELOPE. ‎"Joseph Davey Cunningham, (b. Scotland, 9 June 1812, died 28 February 1851) was the author of the book History of the Sikhs (1849) and an authority in Punjab University. [...] He published "History of the Sikhs" in 1849. The second edition of the book was published in 1853 after the death of Cunningham by his brother Peter Cunningham. The book was noted for Cunningham's criticism of Sir Henry Hardinge's management of the Anglo-Sikh War and which then brought about his dismissal from political service since the views expressed in this work were anything but pleasing to his superiors. As a punishment, he was removed from his political appointment and sent back to regimental duty. The disgrace is reported to have hastened his death, and soon after his appointment to the Meerut Division of Public Works, he died at the city of Ambala, Punjab in 1851. His grave is still there in Ambala Christian cemetery." In 1777 William Curtis (1746-1799) began to lay out a Botanic Garden at Lambeth Marsh, 'somewhat more than an acre in extent, situated to the north west of the Magdalen hospital'. This enterprise Curtis made known to the public in 1778 with the publication of his Proposals for opening by subscription, a botanic garden, to be called the "London Botanic Garden". He closed this pamphlet with the statement: 'The garden to be opened the 1st of January, 1779.' The garden was duly opened In 1783 "to members of the public at a subscription of one guinea a year and had a library for their use. To stock it Curtis received plants "from his Majesty's matchless collection of plants in the Royal Gardens at Kew," from the Chelsea Physic Garden and from the private gardens of Pitcairn, Fothergill, John Coakley Lettsom, Sir Joseph Banks and many others, and also the nurserymen L,, Gordon Malcolm, Davies, Loddiges and Grimwood."?Henrey.
