[ART] [SURREALISM - GREAT BRITAIN] London Surrealist Exhibition
The International Surrealist Exhibition - Thursday June 11th to Saturday July 4th 1936 Signed by Nine of the Artists
London: New Burlington Galleries / Women's Printing Society Ltd 1936. First Edition. Slim octavo 24cm; pictorial wrappers saddle-stitched; 311pp. French gallerist and art dealer Pierre Loeb's copy with "Exemplaire de Pierre Loeb" in red ink on title page by E.L.T. Mesens along with his signature and those of the following individuals associated with the exhibition directly beneath: Shiela Legge André Breton Jacqueline B. Jacqueline Lamba Breton's wife Roland Penrose David Gascoyne Humphrey Jennings Hans Arp and George Reavey. Light external wear and dust-soil wrappers starting to pull away from staples with some scattered discoloration to rear wrapper; a few very light pencil marks in-text else contents quite fresh; Very Good. Housed in a custom clamshell case. Well-preserved catalog of the first Surrealist art exhibition in England organized by artist Roland Penrose and poet David Gascoyne and held at the New Burlington Galleries from June 11th - July 4th 1936. A ground-breaking event described alternately as chaotic indecent and inspiring the organizers assembled nearly 400 paintings and sculptures by 71 Surrealist artists including Hans Arp Jacqueline B. Hans Bellmer Constantin Brancusi Alexander Calder Salvador Dali Marcel Duchamp Alberto Giacometti René Magritte Joan Miró Paul Nash Pablo Picasso Man Ray Yves Tanguy and others. The three-week event was a true spectacle involving Dalí delivering a lecture and nearly passing out while wearing a full deep-sea diving suit Sheila Legge's performance as "The Phantom of Sex Appeal" in Trafalgar Square and poet Dylan Thomas circulating among the guests at the opening offering them cups of boiled string. In addition to listing all 392 works in the exhibit the catalog features a cover illustration by Max Ernst an English-language preface by André Breton translated by Gascoyne and an introduction by Herbert Read. A significant copy signed by several artists and presented to French gallerist Pierre Loeb one of the great champions of Surrealism. On its own a somewhat elusive catalog rarely seen with such a collection of signatures the auction record showing the last such copies for sale in 1976 George Hugnet's copy signed by nine and 1973 Suzanne Malherbe and Claude Cahun's copy signed by 11. 53024. [BRITISH ARMOUR - TOWER OF LONDON - DUTCH MANUSCRIPT].
Beschrijving van de paarden wapenzaal in de Tower te London.
The Netherlands 1825. Ca. 21.5 x 17 cm. Contemporary green paper over brown cloth with a calligraphed title on the front in a floral frame and a drawing of a knight on horseback on the back board within the same floral frame blue speckled edges. With 12 large colourful ink drawings of knights on horseback depicting various British kings and nobles and a smaller ink drawing of knights in battle on the title-page. 1 1 blank 105 pp. Remarkable manuscript with beautiful illustrations and descriptions of the displays in the Royal Armouries in the Tower of London. As the armoury was engulfed by a large fire in 1841 the largest in the history of the Tower of London some of the depicted armour has been destroyed making the present manuscript a unique source on these objects. The work shows the armour of various British kings and nobles including that of Kings Edward I and VI Henry VI VII and VIII James II and V and military officer Horace Vere. They are all on horseback which is how the armour was displayed in the Tower of London at the time. The illustrations are beautifully hand coloured which gives a good impression of how the armour must have looked. The included text describes the objects and gives extensive background information on the kings and nobles they belonged to.The Royal Armouries in the Tower of London is one of the oldest museum exhibitions in the world. One of the earliest recorded visitors was in 1498 when entry was only by special permission. The visitors in the 16th century who wrote about their experience often called the display "disorderly" suggesting that little attention was paid to presentation at this time. This changed when the Stuarts reclaimed the throne in 1660. Two permanent public displays were set up to encourage visitors to marvel at the splendour of the British monarchy. One of the displays was called "The Line of Kings" which placed figures wearing the armour of former British kings on life-sized wooden horses. In 1825 The Line of Kings was relocated into a new building against the south side of the White Tower where it stayed until the fire of 1841. The present manuscript describes this display during this time period. The edges corners and hinges of the boards are somewhat scuffed with some loss of paper on the spine showing the brown cloth underneath. With very mild foxing on some of the leaves. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. Nederlandsch magazijn ter verspreiding van algemeene en nuttige kundigheden 1843 p. 224. hardcover

The second bifolium carries another set of instructions over three pages with no heading beginning: 'The dealer deals 11 cards to each person face downwards and then asks his adversary to name the trump the cards already dealt being placed on the table in this way'. This second section concludes: 'It is a good game for two person sic and is best played with 2 packs of cards each person keeping his own pack -'. [COOPERS - London]
Caption title: Observations on the Case of the Working Coopers to the Distillers in and about the City of London. Humbly offered to the Consideration of the Honourable House of Commons
London: s.n. 1736 1ff. Single sheet. Docket title to verso. Disbound with chipping at gutter and extremities old folds slightly browned to extremities. Ink and wax crayon numerals to head of sheet. An early example of Parliamentary lobbying literature published in small numbers for distribution to Members of Parliament in order to influence opinion in the run up to debates and divisions refuting the Case of the Working Coopers to the Distillers around London in their complaints that 'laying a Duty upon Compound Waters or Spirits' undated but presumably relating to the Gin Act of 1736 would reduce them to 'very calamitous Circumstances'. Referencing the Coopers arguments against the Bill separately published as ESTC N6066 this refutation notes not only that 'the Consumption of Cask by the Brewers and the Demand of Coopers Work for Merchants and Shipping is so great that there are scarce Coopers enough to supply those Branches of the Trade' but also that 'the making the Cask for the Distillers is not so great a Part of the Coopers Business as is pretended'. This document goes further still by making reference to the 'Malt-Distillers' practice of never buying 'any new Cask but make use of old Wine-Pipes which are made abroad'. Rare; ESTC locates a single copy at California State. ESTC N6065. Folio. [s.n.], [1736?] unknown

[COUNTY OF LONDON ASYLUMS COMMITTEE]. [SMITH, Wm Chas Cliford]
Notes of a visit to continental and british asylums compiled for the asylums committee of the london county council. Presented to and printed by order of the Asylums Committee 16th July 1901
London: Printed for the London County Council by Jas. Truscott and Son 1901. v 1 30pp ff31-33 34-55pp ff56 57-103pp. With a further 17 unnumbered leaves of photographic plates or plans. Original cloth-backed printed paper boards. Somewhat worn with a split to upper joint at head and concomitantly to inner hinge and marginal loss to foot of upper board. A rare profusely illustrated report of an extraordinary tour of British and European asylums undertaken by William Charles Clifford Smith 1855-1931 Asylums Engineer for the London County Council between 1892 and 1924 during Easter Europe and Whitsun Scotland of 1901. The tour took the author to 'Paris and Dun-sue-Auron.Munich Wasserberg Dresden Leipsic Berlin Uchtspringe and Langenfield.Leirneux.Utrecht Haarlem and Emero-Veldwijk.Gartloch Woodilee Larbert Hartwood Inverness Murthly.and Whittingham'. In turn Smith examines for each institution the history situation building construction arrangement of bathing and kitchen facilities and the mode of heating with occasional comments on the numbers general afflictions and diversions of and the separation by sex between the institutions' patients. The numerous illustrations are variously original 'presented to me by the medical directors' or reproductions of other reports both British and Continental. Whilst the tone of the work is largely as one would expect from an engineer it has perhaps unsurprisingly not escaped from the attitudes of the day; such as the inclusion of the 'Berlin City Asylum for Insane Epileptics'. Rare. Unrecorded by COPAC; OCLC locates just two copies at Pennsylvania and McGill. . Folio. Printed for the London County Council, by Jas. Truscott and Son hardcover

[Dobbs of London]
Embossed hand-painted pheasant card
London: Dobbs of London 1830. Single sheet of stiff card hand-cut oblong oval 11 x 14 cm. embossed with the publisher's name on the lower left. A superb late Georgian embossed paper pheasant with hand painted watercolor detailing. This beautiful embossed paper pheasant was produced plain in the 1820-30 period by Dobbs of London who were a firm of embossers print publishers and "ornamental stationers to the King". The Regency period saw the introduction of the technique of embossing and it quickly became a very popular form of decoration. Dobbs were known for their use of embossed paper/card designs used in face screens mourning cards writing papers visiting cards and envelopes adapted to all the purposes of fashionable correspondence drawing writing and wrapping papers etc. Painting and drawing were very popular pastimes in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The plain high relief/ embossed card was purchased from a stationer and the artist then set to work bringing the pheasant to life by the use of watercolor. Early dealer's pencil note. Hand-cut into an oval not effecting text or image. Very good. Dobbs of London unknown
