Jack London
The Call of The Wild Signed & Dated
U.S.A.: Grosset & Dunlap 1906. 5th or later Printing. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Charles Edward Hooper. This is a 12th printing 1906 by Grosset & Dunlap--authorized reprint through MacMillan from the original printing in 1903. This copy is signed by Jack London on the title page--dated 1912 and "Glen Ellen Calif". This copy is also signed twice by noted author and hypnotist "From Dick Sutphen with "Defiance Oct 13 1906" on the half title page and again on the Chapter I heading "Into The Primitive". It is not known why the date of 1906 was used by Sutphen--that date is before Jack London signed this copy--unless it has some kind of past life reference by Sutphen--In addition there is also a signature on the same Chapter I title page of Vin Moore--Vin Moore was an American film director actor and writer- who directed 83 films between 1915 and 1938. Although Sutphen wasn't born until 1937--he was connected to Jack London through London's novel "The Star Rover" which dealt with self-hypnosis and reincarnation. Sutphen wrote a new epilogue for the 1987 reprint edition of London's "The Star Rover" and claimed to have had a past life connection to the character Ed Morrell. Sutphen wrote the bestseller "You Were Born Again To Be Together"--and wrote 21 books for Simon & Schuster as well as appearing on many TV shows. This may have been Dick Sutphen's personal copy--although not known when purchased at auction. This copy is in "Good" condition--tight and unmarked interior with moderate toning to the green cloth--especially to the spine where the letters are mostly unreadable and the front panel where the depiction of John Thornton and Buck is unfortunately very hard to visualize.

Grosset & Dunlap hardcover

The Call of the Wild
CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform 2015. Hardcover. New/New.
Author: Jack London

Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform

Binding: Hardcover

ISBN: 9781511580359

Release Date: 2015

Number Of Pages: 72

Details: The Call of the Wild is a novel by Jack London published in 1903. The story is set in the Yukon during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush---a period in which strong sled dogs were in high demand. The novel's central character is a dog named Buck a domesticated dog living at a ranch in the Santa Clara Valley of California as the story opens. Stolen from his home and sold into service as sled dog in Alaska he reverts to a wild state. Buck is forced to fight in order to dominate other dogs in a harsh climate. Eventually he sheds the veneer of civilization relying on primordial instincts and learned experience to emerge as a leader in the wild. London lived for most of a year in the Yukon collecting material for the book. The story was serialized in the Saturday Evening Post in the summer of 1903; a month later it was released in book form. The novel’s great popularity and success made a reputation for London. Much of its appeal derives from the simplicity of this tale of survival. As early as 1908 the story was adapted to film and it has since seen several more cinematic adaptations. Background By 1897 California native Jack London had traveled around the United States as a hobo returned to California to finish high school he dropped out at age 14 and spent a year in college at Berkeley. He then traveled to the Klondike by way of Alaska during the height of the Klondike Gold Rush later saying of the experience: "It was in the Klondike I found myself." Leaving California in July he traveled to Dyea where he went inland. To reach the gold fields he and his party transported their gear over the Chilkoot Pass often carrying on their backs loads of up to 100 pounds 45 kg. They staked claims to eight gold mines along the Stewart River. London stayed in the Klondike for almost a year. He lived for a time in the frontier town of Dawson City before moving to a nearby winter camp where he spent the winter reading books he had brought: Charles Darwin's The Origin of the Species; and John Milton's Paradise Lost. In the winter of 1898 Dawson City today mostly deserted was a city with about 30000 miners a saloon an opera house and a street of brothels. In the spring of 1898 as the annual gold stampeders began to stream into the area London left. He had contracted scurvy common in the Arctic winters where fresh produce was unavailable. When London's gums began to swell he decided to return to California. With his companions he rafted 2000 miles 3200 km down the Yukon River through portions of the wildest territory in the region until they reached St. Michael where he hired himself out on a boat and returned to San Francisco. In Alaska London found material that inspired him to write the novella The Call of the Wild. Dyea Beach was the primary point of arrival for miners at the time London visited but without a harbor access was treacherous so Skagway became the new arrival point. From there to reach the Klondike prospectors had
CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform hardcover
