London used the first stanza of O'Hara's poem "Atavism" as the epigraph to THE CALL OF THE WILD. Also on On the ffep. is London's autograph clipped from a Merchant's National Bank of San Francisco check laid down beneath his lithographed bookplate with his name printed above a wolf's head between snowshoes beneath the bookplate of noted bibliophile John Stuart Groves. He needed the money badly for he had overspent his income to satisfy his various desires. As well as paying for his ranch and his growing number of dependents he was beginning to squander a fortune on building a boat called the "Snark" for his seven years' voyage. He returned to panning out a living from Alaska in the stories collected in a volume with "Love of Life." His confidence in his own tenacity was shown in that extraordinary story of man's will to survive at all costs. Yet the instability of his long sickness also appeared in "The Sun-Dog Trail." In that underestimated story of a man and woman bent on vengeance against another man the reason for action is hidden and the white silence of the north is as ambiguous as it is murderous. Reality and appearance willpower and dream are all confused in a last reckoning. Sinclair As always the title leaf is a cancel. This is a bright nearly fine copy a damaged corner of the front paste-down and the slightest of rubbing at the extremities; there is none of the usual flaking of the cream-colored front cover border. Michael Brother of Jerry is a novel by Jack London released in 1917. This novel is the sequel to his previous novel Jerry of the Islands also released in 1917. Each book tells the story of one of two dog siblings Jerry and Michael born in the Solomon Islands.12 Michael an Irish terrier was born and raised in the Solomon Islands. The dog now works as a slave hunter aboard a schooner on a mission to recruit native islanders for work. One day the captain accidentally leaves Michael on a beach and sails away. Michael was then abducted by Dag Daughtry a steward on another ship who initially planned to sell the dog for money. First Edition of this posthumously-published book published about six months after JERRY OF THE ISLANDS. Though both books were written by Jack in Honolulu as cash-raising hackwork MICHAEL BROTHER OF JERRY was a better book. It argued that far worse than the Social Pit for men were the cages for trained dogs and circus animals. All the foul tricks of the trade were exposed. So effective was his indignation that hundreds of London clubs sprang up on the publication of the book dedicated to ending the trade in performing animals. Sinclair By the time Jack wrote this book in late 1915 on his and Charmian's second trip to Hawaii during 1915-1916 Jack was swilling so much fruit juice as it helped flush out the toxins his kidneys couldn't handle that he was becoming quite fat. He rarely stirred out of his kimono and his hammock. He felt too ill to walk more than a block and he preferred to take the chauffeur and the car for the shortest excursion. This is a near-fine copy very slightly rubbed at the extremities but the title page bears a blind-stamp and the paste-down an ink-stamp of an early Maine bookseller. First printing Very good- in red cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine and gilt and black text on the front board with a black silhouette of two dogs. A 12mo measuring 7 1/2" by 5" with the cloth at the corners of the head and heel of the spine is slightly worn as is the cloth at the tips of the boards. The end sheets show minor foxing and there is an older four digit price notation on the first free end page. A neat and clean copy of London's 46th book. First Edition consisting of 8400 copies preceded only by a pre-publication copyright issue. Probably the best-known story in this collection is "Planchette" -- in which the spirit of a woman's dead father returns to kill her lover; it showed that Jack had evidently not outgrown his mother's belief in evil spirits. By the time MOON-FACE came out Jack had journeyed to the Far East to cover the Russo-Japanese War for the Hearst organization -- at which he tried to emulate the Great White Scribe of the period Richard Harding Davis. He badly injured an ankle on in a leaping game with the other correspondents on board ship: "It was the beginning of a morbid worry about his physical condition a long anxiety that would end only with his death" Sinclair. He returned to California to discover that his wife had attached his Hearst earnings in her suit for divorce Bess ultimately agreed to a divorce on the grounds of desertion after he offered to build a home in Piedmont for her and their two daughters.
