‎Gutes Ex. - Herbert Arthur Strauss (* 1. Juni 1918 in Würzburg; ? 11. März 2005 in New York) war ein deutschstämmiger US-amerikanischer Historiker. Strauss verbrachte seine Jugend in Würzburg. Nach der Mittleren Reife verließ er das Gymnasium und begann eine kaufmännische Ausbildung. 1936 zog er nach Berlin um, wo er bei der Reichsvertretung der Juden in Deutschland das Nationale Jugendbüro leitete. Von 1936 bis zur Schließung 1942 studierte er an der Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums in Berlin, um die Auswanderung nach Palästina vorzubereiten. Im März 1942 holte er das Abitur nach. Die geplante und bereits genehmigte Auswanderung nach England scheiterte am Kriegsausbruch im September 1939. Vom Herbst 1940 an war er neben dem Studium als Hilfsrabbiner für die jüdische Gemeinde in Berlin tätig. Im Januar 1942 wurde er zur Zwangsarbeit als Straßenkehrer verpflichtet. Um der bevorstehenden Deportation zu entgehen, tauchte er im Oktober 1942 mit seiner Verlobten Lotte Kahle, seiner späteren Frau, in den Untergrund ab. Im Juni 1943 gelang ihm die Flucht mit Hilfe von Luise Meier in Berlin, Elise Höfler und Josef Höfler aus Gottmadingen über die grüne Grenze in den Kanton Schaffhausen, in die Schweiz.[1] Die Jahre der Verfolgung schildern sowohl er (Über dem Abgrund) wie seine Frau (Über den grünen Hügel) in einem Buch. In Bern studierte er Geschichte und promovierte 1946 bei Werner Näf mit dem Thema Staat, Bürger, Mensch. Die Grundrechtsdebatte der Deutschen Nationalversammlung zu Frankfurt 1848/49. 1946 ging er in die USA und lehrte dort als Professor für Geschichte am City College in New York. 1982 wurde er nach Berlin an die Technische Universität berufen, um dort als Gründungsdirektor das Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung aufzubauen. 1990 kehrte er wieder in die USA zurück; sein Nachfolger am Zentrum wurde Wolfgang Benz. "The treatment of sciatica by injection of sodium chlorid solution whether epidurally or in the neughborhood of the nerve offers a meas os shortening the duration of the painful malady from weeks and months to days." Strauss "Sciatica until very recently was considered a distinct morbid entity. It was defined as a neuralgia of the sciatic nerve due to conditions within the nerve itself or caused secondarily by organic lesions adjacent to the nerve its roots or their origin in the cord. In the past few years however there has been a tendency in practically all the cases to regard the condition as secondary to some organic lesion. Dejerine and his school have called attention to the segmentary distribution of the sensory disturbances in some cases of sciatica and this they consider evidence that the site of the inflammation is in the roots and not in the trunk of the nerve. They have given the name of "radiculitis" to this condition. Wertheim-Salomonson asserts that one half of the cases of sciatica which he observed were due to radiculitis; he is of the opinion that most investigators overlook these cases because they fail to recognize the root type of the sensory disturbances. Many authors speak of neuralgia of the nerve and it is probable that the indiscriminate use of this term has caused skepticism regarding the existence of sciatica as a clinical entity. A few believe with Gowers that all cases of sciatica are due to a neuritis. It is held by others that most of the cases of idiopathic sciatica are due to lumbosacral and sacro-iliac disease and sacro-iliac subluxation. In fact in the discussion of Rogers' paper' before the Section on Orthopedic Surgery at the 1916 session of the American Medical Association some of the members went so far as to deride the idea that there could be an essential nerve inflammation." A type-written program and script for a musical revue starring some of the biggest names in Broadway musical theater at the time: John Raitt Tammy Grimes Dick Shawn Larry Kert Patrice Munsell Cyril Ritchard. And not known for musicals but another big name: Lillian Gish. The script is dated September; the show opened in November 13 the same year at the St. James Theatre and it ran until February 1 1976. Our copy has the inked ownership inscription of one of the actors/singers in the production Dennis Perrin -- perhaps not as well-known as some of the others but a working actor on Broadway at the time. 4to. 29 by 23 cm. Six leaves followed by paginated leaves with a few inserts but also missing numbers reflecting undoubtedly changes in the script and choice of song during the rehearsal period. The revue was made up of generally well-known standards with scripted dialogue interspersed. We assume that there was plenty of extemporaneous dialogue in other places and the scripted dialogue was never followed religiously with liberties taken here and there even with the well-known songs. It would seem that the impetus for the show though was to pay homage to the old chestnuts at a time the American musical was undergoing some radical change -- the same year as this "A Chorus Line" opened which offers the perfect counterpoint to what was being done here. The only institutional copy of a script for this revue that shows up on OCLC First Search is at the Library of Congress which of course would have to have a copy. It is possible the LOC has several different versions of the script; we can't say what they have is identical to this one. One could think that the musical wasn't helped by performers past their prime but that wouldn't be entirely true. Take Tammy Grimes -- her next show after this was "California Suite" a huge hit for Neil Simon in 1976 in which Grimes starred in all three of the plays making up the Suite. And other stars such as John Raitt and Larry Kert might not have been able to repeat their earlier successes but that was not because there was anything wrong with their voices -- John Raitt voice still had beauty and heft when he performed with his daughter years later and Larry Kert one could say had some near misses. And both were surely not helped by changing styles and attitudes regarding musical theatre. Ultimately the problem with a show such as this is that it was a potluck of second servings. These performers would have gone for a decent new book musical if one were offered to them and likewise the audience could too buy tickets for new book musicals such as "Chorus Line". Johann Baptist Strauss II 25 October 1825 - 3 June 1899 also known as Johann Strauss Jr. was an Austrian composer of light music particularly dance music and operettas as well as a violinist. He composed over 500 waltzes polkas quadrilles marches and other types of dance music as well as several operettas and a ballet. The Russian March is a march by Johann Strauss II Op. 426. The work was premiered on April 29 1886 in the riding hall of the Guard Regiment in St. Petersburg Russia. In 1886 Johann Strauss visited Russia for the first time since 1869 accepting an invitation from the ladies of St. Petersburg society to participate in several charity events. At a gala concert held in the riding hall of the Russian Horse Guards Regiment the composer presented the waltz Les Dames de St. Pétersbourg-written specifically for his Russian tour-which later became known as Wiener Frauen Op. 423. The polka An der Wolga Op. 425 was also composed during this period. Many works created during Strauss's earlier visits to Russia were performed. A new release was the march Garde à Cheval which was later retitled Russischer Marsch. The work was dedicated to the reigning Tsar Alexander III. Incidentally this 1886 trip to Russia proved to be the composer's last. The duration of the piece is 4 minutes and 2 seconds cited in references. This time may vary slightly depending on the conductor's musical interpretation. The Russischer Marsch one of Johann Strauss's 'characteristic marches' belongs to that group of new compositions with which the Viennese maestro charmed audiences attending his series of charity concerts in St. Petersburg in 1886. This trip to Russia made at the invitation of the 'Russian Society of the Red Cross' and a children's charity was to be Johann's final visit there and came after a lapse of seventeen years since his last concert engagement at nearby Pavlovsk 1869. The court society which surrounded the Tsar may have known little of life in Russia thirty years earlier but was well aware of Strauss's reputation as the darling of the public and as a favorite of the Imperial family through his triumphant 'Russian summers' at Pavlovsk during the years 1856-65. The appearance of the Viennese maestro in St. Petersburg in 1886 once again occasioned an outbreak of 'Strauss fever' with shops offering pictures busts and statuettes of the conductor/composer. The venue for the 1886 charity concerts was the vast riding school of the Horse Guards Regiment in St. Petersburg and the 80-strong orchestra of the Imperial Russian Opera had been provided for the concerts. Johann conducted his own compositions. The majority of the works he performed were those which had proved popular in Pavlovsk during the 1850s and 1860s but these were supplemented by more recent works like the Brautschau-Polka op. 417 and Schatz-Walzer op. 418 both based on themes from his latest operetta success Der Zigeunerbaron The Gypsy Baron 1885. In addition Johann composed four new works especially for his 1886 Russian visit - 2 waltzes a polka and a march. It was at his third concert on 29 April 1886 = 17 April Russian calendar that he unveiled his Marche des Gardes à Cheval March of the Horse Guards written as a tribute to the Tsar's bodyguard in whose riding school the concerts took place. Although the Marche des Gardes à Cheval is without doubt "uniquely interesting" as the critic of the St. Petersburger Zeitung opined of this and the polka-mazurka Mon salut = An der Wolga op. 425 its title does not really suit the character of the piece. Far from being a 'cavalry march' in the style of the Grossfürsten-Marsch op.107 or the Caroussel-Marsch op. 133 for example this work is more descriptive of heavily-laden Russian foot-soldiers trudging wearily through the snow even to the extent of the diminuendo at the end of the piece as the column of soldiers disappears into the distance. Thus much more apposite was the name with which the march was rechristened for audiences in Vienna when Johann conducted its first performance there as an encore item during Eduard Strauss's benefit concert in the Musikverein on 7 November 1886: the Russischer Marsch. This was also the title under which August Cranz published the work together with the composer's dedication to "his Majesty Alexander III Emperor of Russia etc. etc" A. Buttner [associated with Aug.
