Some internal wear and browning; remnants of wrapper to inner margin of title. First performed in Vienna at the Theater an der Wien on 24 October 1885 with text by I. Schnitzer after M. Jókai's Saffi.

"Certainly Strauss was no judge of librettos and throughout his life he found it both cumbersome and restricting to compose to prescribed texts though with Der Zigeunerbaron 1885 he showed himself uncharacteristically adept in this. Over the next quarter of a century a further 14 operettas and even a grand opera Ritter Pásmán 1892 cemented Strauss's position as the leading light in 'Silver Age' Viennese operetta though even in the composer's lifetime only three of these found international success: Die Fledermaus 1874 Eine Nacht in Venedig 1883 and Der Zigeunerbaron." TrV 203 227 228 263.

"Strauss considered his operas to be his major contribution to the 20th century and from Salome to Capriccio he averaged a new opera every two to three years. .Coming of age as a composer at a time when the duality of bourgeois and artist had become increasingly problematic Strauss negotiated the worlds of art and society with a remarkable combination of candour and irony. Averse to the metaphysics of Wagner and indifferent to Mahler's philosophical intentions in music Strauss exploited instead the paradoxes inconsistencies and potential profundities to be found in modern everyday life. The new possibilities he envisioned for music were exemplified in the eclecticism of the opera Der Rosenkavalier in which the juxtaposition of contemporary with intentionally anachronistic elements creates a stylistic pluralism that adumbrates subsequent experimentation of the later 20th century." Muller von Asow I p. 409.

Elektra premiered in Dresden at the önigliches Opernhaus on 25 January 1909.

"The music of Elektra is often diagnosed as marking an 'advanced' point - i.e. on the way to modernist atonality - from which the composer then staged a prudent inglorious retreat. That bespeaks a prejudice which he never espoused. Though passages in the opera share the queasy harmonic climate of Schoenberg's op.11 no.2 piano piece 1909 Strauss felt no natural urge towards atonality as the Music of the Future. The sporadic 'atonalisms' in Elektra as in his Ophelia songs were meant to convey the exacerbated spiritual condition of his characters not to promote some more radical cause. .The apparent similarities between Elektra and say Schoenberg's atonal Erwartung also 1909 lie in their violent extremes - of vocal line and histrionic moods of dynamics and post-Romantic orchestration. Strauss's score however absolutely presupposes a secure tonal norm against which to measure its harsh disorientating dramatic effects for an audience with late Romantic ears." A poem by Ritter published in the score postdates the composition though the musical theme for the Ideal may have been inspired by one from Ritter's symphonic waltz Olafs Hochzeitsreigen. In Tod und Verklärung death is less the issue than transfiguration a lifelong fascination for Strauss with its abundant musical possibilities one that manifests itself from Rosenkavalier through to Metamorphosen." STRAUSS Richard 1864 1949
Autograph letter signed to an unidentified male recipient
2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated Garmisch July 20 1908. On lined paper. In French with translation.

An important letter in which Strauss discusses the forthcoming Dresden Berlin and Monte Carlo premières of his opera Elektra.

". Tell Raoul Gunsbourgh that I am sure to finish the score for Elektra by September that everything will be printed by the beginning of December and that the French première at Monte Carlo can take place towards the end of February or the beginning of March. I myself will be able to conduct Elektra at Monte Carlo if all circumstances permit. I want to personally assist in the première of Elektra at Dresden at the end of January. "

Very slightly soiled; creased at folds. As promised Strauss completed the score for Elektra on September 22 1908. The opera premièred at the Dresden Hofoper on January 25 1909 followed shortly thereafter by a performance in Berlin on February 15. Although publically announced in newspapers such as the New York Times the Monte Carlo première appears not to have eventuated. The French language première of the opera was actually given by the Manhattan Opera Company on February 1 1910; Strauss accorded the first American performance of Elektra to this fledgling company of Oscar Hammerstein's as something of an act of revenge upon the Metropolitan Opera for banning his previous opera Salome.

Raoul Gunsbourgh 1860-1955 was the longest-serving director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo his career there spanning almost six decades. unknown books

After the writer's untimely death in 1929 the composer. asked Joseph Gregor in 1936 to develop the Danae idea. There was long painful rewriting and as usual the composer wounded his subservient partner by taking outside advice. and thrusting it upon him. The score was finished in June 1940. Strauss was reluctant to see this 'oeuvre posthume' staged during his lifetime and after the 1944 première meant to celebrate his 80th birthday was aborted by Goebbels when the Allies' Second Front threatened he never sanctioned another performance." "The Symphonia domestica inspired at first even more controversy than Ein Heldenleben. Originally titled Mein Heim: ein sinfonisches Selbst- und Familienporträt the work was always referred to by Strauss as a symphony or symphonic poem and there are indeed four sections that correspond loosely to symphonic movements: introduction presentation of major characters and their themes scherzando child at play his parents' happiness cradle song and Adagio child is put to bed thereafter a parental love scene and finale in the form of a double fugue a new day begins with quarrelling and happy reconciliation."
