This copy was owned by Neville Laski QC a prominent Judge and leader of Anglo-Jewry with Laski�s armorial bookplate. Bertha Badt-Straus was a Zionist Author and Biographer who was an active member of the Jewish community in Berlin. She wrote articles for a variety of Jewish newspapers including J�dische Rundschau Der Jude Israelitische Familienblatt Bl�tter des J�dischen Frauenbundes and Der Morgen and she contributed as well to two Jewish encyclopedias the German Encyclopaedia Judaica and J�disches Lexikon. She was also a prolific editor and translator of works by other writers including Annette Von Droste-H�lshoff Achim von Arnim Moses Mendelssohn Fanny Lewald Hermann Cohen Rahel Varnhagen Heinrich Heine S��kind von Trimberg Profiat Duran and Leon of Modena. She also wrote a book-length unpublished biography of German writer Elise Reimarus.1885-1970. Wikipedia 2016 In her articles and books she preferred to present a series of diverse Jewish women from past and present without judging their lifestyle. Her only qualification for considering them as Jewish was their return to Judaism and a commitment to Eretz Israel. While not specifying the manner of this return or which role woman had to play in Judaism and in the Yishuv she invited women to take part in the creation of a Jewish community even if they had not previously seen their space in this context because of a rigid male conception of Jewish femininity. In his programmatic Prolegomena to the Medieval History of Oriental Jews JQR 50 1959 he pointed out that it was the task of the historian to understand the Oriental Jewish communities as an integral element of Muslim society and at the same time to note their affinities with Jews from other countries and periods. Ashtor's Toledot ha-Yehudim be-Mi Rayim ve-Suryah Tahat Shilton ha-Mamlukim 'History of the Jews in Egypt and Syria under the Rule of the Mamluks ' 2 vols. 1944 1951 reveals his familiarity with the relevant Muslim literature much of which is still in manuscript his apt use of the accounts of the European travelers and of Jewish sources. He also wrote Korot ha-Yehudim bi-Sefarad ha-Muslemit 'History of the Jews in Muslim Spain ' 2 vols. 1960 1966 .
