"Elisabeth Bergner geboren am 22.8.1897 in Drogobycz/Galizien, gestorben am 12.5.1986 in London. Sie debütierte 1915 am Theater in Innsbruck, später folgten Auftritte in Zürich, Wien, München und Berlin. Der große Durchbruch gelang ihr 1923 in Shakespeares Wie es euch gefällt am Lessing-Theater in Berlin. "Bergner! Bergner! rief die Galerie. Und wir, die wir dabei waren, nuckelten mit dem Kopf und segneten sie und wünschten ihr alles Gute. Betend, dass Gott sie erhalte, so jung, so schön, so hold. Und dass der Film ihr fernbleibe...", schrieb Kurt Tucholsky später in Die Weltbühne. Elisabeth Bergner prägte die Berliner Theaterszene der folgenden zehn Jahre mit. Ab 1924 arbeitete sie ausschließlich mit dem Regisseur Paul Czinner zusammen, der auch privat ihr Partner wurde. Fortan drehte Elisabeth Bergner auch sehr erfolgreich Kinofilme. Als Juden flohen sie und Czinner nach der "Machtergreifung" der Nationalsozialisten zuerst nach Wien und dann nach London, wo sie heirateten. Der Übergang zum Tonfilm gelang ihr mühelos, auch die englische Sprache erlernte sie schnell. Elisabeth Bergner konnte in der neuen Heimat an ihre Theater- und Filmerfolge anknüpfen. 1935 erhielt sie für ihre Rolle in Verlass mich niemals wieder eine Oscar-Nominierung. 1940 zog sie mit ihrem Mann nach Hollywood. Sie engagierte sich in Exilantenkreisen und gehörte neben Bertolt Brecht, Erwin Piscator und Lion Feuchtwanger 1944 zu den Mitunterzeichnern der Grundsatzerklärung des "Council for a Democratic Germany". Nach dem Ende des Krieges arbeitete sie in New York unter anderem bei dem deutschsprachigen Theater Players from Abroad, bis sie nach London zurückkehrte und bis zu ihrem Tod Engagements als Theater- und Filmschauspielerin in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland annahm."(aus: Deutsches Theater Berlin)
