April 1940 in Berlin) arbeitet als Künstler und Autor. Als Fotograf ist er international anerkannt. Bekannt wurde Michael Ruetz Ende der 60er Jahre durch seine Bilder der westdeutschen Studentenbewegung. Die Fotos der Berliner APO-Zeit, an welcher er als Chronist teilnahm, wurden in den großen Periodika wie Time, Life, Spiegel und Zeit veröffentlicht und erschienen später unter dem Titel Ihr müsst diesen Typen nur ins Gesicht sehen. APO Berlin 1966-1969 in Buchform. In den 1960er und 1970er Jahren bereiste er im Auftrag des Stern die DDR, u. a. während der Weltfestspiele der Jugend 1973 und des 1. Mai 1974. Ebenso fotografierte Michael Ruetz die Akteure und Liquidatoren des Prager Frühlings. In weiteren Reportagen zeigte er Griechenland zur Zeit der Militärdiktatur, Chile nach dem Wahlsieg Salvador Allendes und Guinea-Bissau im Unabhängigkeitskrieg. Aus der Zeit um 1970 stammen Porträts von François Mitterrand, Helmut Kohl und anderen europäischen Politikern. Mit Projekten wie Nekropolis und zahlreichen Bildserien, die sich thematisch an den Reisen Goethes und Fontanes (Auf Goethes Spuren, Auch ich in Arkadien/Goethes Italienische Reise, Fontanes Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg) orientieren, wandte er sich zunehmend kulturhistorischen und dokumentarischen Projekten zu. … (wiki) // In Berlin, 1966-1969. Dieses Buch soll keine Kritik, sondern eine Chronik der APO sein. Ich möchte mich daher auf einen Bericht über meine Arbeit und ihre photographischen Aspekte beschränken, und mich weiter anschweigen über die Fragen, die ich damals kaum beantworten konnte, heute vielleicht beantworten kann. So zum Beispiel: warum die Massen sich uns nicht anschlössen, obwohl wir doch "massenhaft" demonstrierten (Wortspiele hält man ja manchmal für Einsichten). So zum Beispiel: ob die Studenten, die Mitte der Sechziger Jahre "Heraus aus dem Elfenbeinturm" zur Parole gemacht hatten (ich, indem ich mich exmatrikulieren ließ, mit ihnen), die alten Elfenbeintürme nicht nur stehen ließen, sondern sich sogar neue gebaut haben. So zum Beispiel: ob die APO nicht vielleicht doch im wesentlichen ein Aufstand einer privilegierten Minderheit war, oder doch dazu durch die Trittbrettfahrer gemacht wurde. Immerhin: die APO-Generation von 1966 bis 1969 hat wichtige Teile ihrer Revolte selbst gemacht und sie nicht nur gefordert und delegiert. Eine der Wirkungen der APO-Generation - die sich ja auch auf ältere Generationen erstreckten - beruht sicher darauf, daß sie sich Freiheiten herausnahm, die sich die Vorkriegs-, Kriegs- und Nachkriegs-Generationen bestenfalls als Traum gestattet hatten. Um zu einem genauen Bild der APO zu gelangen, bedürfte es noch anderer Einsichten wie der in den Nachlaß von Bernward Vesper. Vielleicht wäre dann eine Erkenntnis ihrer politischen Psychologie und ihrer Kontinuität innerhalb der deutschen Geschichte möglich. Zu allem ist es noch zu früh: 35 Jahre Abstand zum Dritten Reich haben ja auch nicht gereicht, vollständige Kenntnis und Erkenntnis zu erreichen. Da steht uns noch vieles bevor. Dieses Buch kann also nur einen kleinen Beitrag zur Geschichte der APO leisten, und ist am besten als Grundlage (späterer) forschender Auswertung zu benützen. … (Vorwort)
