Volume I with gentle dust-soiling to the spine and the rear inner hinge with a thin crack. Handsome contemporary bookplate to the front free endpaper and some foxing to the endpapers. Volume II with similar wear but the inner hinges both very strong. Notable stain on the front board which also affects the margins of the first few pages. Occasional and inevitable age-toning and offsetting internally in both volumes due to the acidity in the paper used to mount the plates. The two volumes issued separately are each one of 1150 limited copies SIGNED by Rackham on the limitation page. Unlike so many of these Rackham signed limited editions both of these volumes retain their original silk ties though the rear in volume I is perished. Overall a nearly very good set. William Heinemann 1910. 1st Edition. Full Vellum Fine Binding Hardcover. VG. Signed Limited edition No 79 of 1150 copies. Vellum binding with gilt stamped titles to the front and spine. Top edge gilt uncut edges ixi 159 1pp with 34 tipped in colour plates and Arthur Rackham's signature to the limitation page. Laid in there is an exhibition leaflet for an exhibition of the original water-colours of the plates. The book comes with its original white cloth covered slip case. There is a little light marking to the boards and more to the spine. There are repaired closed tears of around 2cm to the fore edge of the last 2 pages. There is also a small crease to bottom corner of the final plate. There is toning to the pages facing the illustrations and a little toning to the uncut edges. There is a small bookseller's ticket to the rear pastedown and a touch of cracking to the rear hinge. The book lacks both its ribbon ties. The slip case is firm but with some rubbing to the spine edges and and spotting particularly to the top and bottom edges. Despite the issues mentioned this is a lovely copy which has been well protected by the slipcase. Illustrated with tipped-in colour plates. Publisher's light brown cloth with gilt titles to spine titles and decoration in gilt to upper pictorial endpapers; top edge tinted brown. No ink names contents clean edges of text blocks lightly toned bindings carefully used with a few small marks/nicks. Very good indeed. A superb example of Rackham's dramatic interpretation of Wagner's libretti his only work for adults. London-born Arthur Rackham 1867-1939 studied drawing at evening classes at Lambeth School of Art from 1884 for 7 years whilst working full-time in insurance. He began his career using the then new half-tone process his fame spreading upon publication of his illustrated Grimm's Fairy Tales in 1909. In 1905 his illustrated Rip van Winkle introduced him to the US public; one year later Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was published. Rackham was made a full member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1908 and was honoured abroad with gold medals from Milan 1906 and Barcelona 1911.
