Il titolo del primo saggio "Perché dobbiamo salvare Wagner" - indica già il fine che Zizek si propone in queste pagine. Bisogna "salvare" Wagner da una condanna che a partire dalla metà del secolo XX sembrava aver definitivamente sepolto l'autore sotto l'accusa di aver preparato la strada all'avvento del nazismo e al trionfo dell'antisemitismo. Una lunga riflessione che per tanti aspetti lo accomuna ad Alain Badiou, l'altro pensatore "comunista" che ha dedicato tante pagine alla "salvezza" del discusso musicista tedesco. In un quadro di riferimento legato principalmente alla lezione di Lacan e dello strutturalismo, in particolare di Claude Lévi-Strauss, Zizek cerca di svuotare dall'interno l'immagine tradizionale che ancora oggi si associa alla figura di Wagner, la cui musica va al di là di ogni sua teorizzazione scritta o di ogni sua dichiarazione ideologica. La riscoperta del "vero" Wagner ci permette così di restituire a Bayreuth quella immagine di "canone insuperabile, comparabile soltanto con le tragedie greche e con Shakespeare", ultimo grande "antidoto al nuovo ordine mondiale americanizzato".
