Nella prima metà dell'Ottocento furono due i processi che, profondamente intrecciati l'uno con l'altro, contribuirono a trasformare il Mezzogiorno continentale in un territorio per la prima volta soggetto al pieno controllo dell'apparato statale. Il primo si espresse nella radicale ridefinizione amministrativa dello spazio interno del Regno, così come nella stabilizzazione del suo unico confine di terra, ovvero quello con lo Stato Pontificio. Il secondo si concretizzò invece nell'affinamento delle procedure di sorveglianza delle frontiere e di controllo del movimento delle persone, alle quali venne imposto di munirsi di inediti documenti di riconoscimento individuale nel momento in cui decidevano di mettersi in viaggio. E tuttavia, non si trattò in alcun modo di un processo unilaterale, dal momento che le istituzioni deputate al controllo del territorio, in primo luogo la polizia, furono costantemente poste a confronto con preesistenti pratiche sociali dello spazio. Lasciando affiorare dalle carte d'archivio storie di passaporti scambiati e venduti, di creazione e disvelamento di identità fittizie, di controversie territoriali dalle radici secolari, il libro ricostruisce i modi in cui, attraverso un'interazione dialettica tra istituzioni e società, il Mezzogiorno preunitario prese parte a quei processi costitutivi di una moderna statualità, che erano all'epoca in atto su scala europea. Dopo il fallimento di Jefferys nel 1766, l'atlante fu completato per la prima volta da Robert Sayer nel 1773. Dal 1794, l'atlante fu pubblicato dai suoi successori Laurie & Whittle. Engraved map of the south of Italy (then the Kingdom of Naples) starting at Abruzzoultra in the north.The map differentiates the political subdivisions of the Kingdom of Naples with fine outline hand-color.The Kingdom of Naples was a major political entity in the southern Italian peninsula from 1282 until 1808. In 1816 it was joined with Sicily to form the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and in 1861 it was annexed to form the Kingdom of Italy.This map comes from Thomas Kitchin's A General Atlas. This atlas was conceived of by Thomas Jefferys in the 1760s. Following Jefferys' bankruptcy in 1766, the atlas was first completed by Robert Sayer in 1773. This was Robert Sayer's first terrestrial atlas. From 1794, the atlas was published by his successors Laurie & Whittle. Later editions tend to be more desirable. Thomas Kitchin's name appears on title pages even after his death in 1784. The maps are after a variety of makers such as d'Anville, Roberts, Dunn, Rocque, Delarochette, Rennell, Zannoni, Dury, Cook, Vancouver, Perouse and others.This map is from the 1797 edition of the atlas. Magnifica prova, impressa su singolo foglio reale di carta vergata coeva, rifilata al rame, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Splendida veduta a volo d’uccello della città edita come separata pubblicazione a Roma nell’anno giubilare 1600. Dedicata a Don Fernando de Castro, Conte di Lemos e vicerè del Regno di Napoli, la pianta reca in alto a sinistra lo stemma Reale di Spagna, a destra quello della città e al centro vicino alla dedica lo stemma del dedicatore Pico Blas, che probabilmente commissionò l’OPERA. Giacomo Lauro, cartografo, incisore e editore attivo a Roma tra il 1585 ed il 1612, è autore di diverse piante e vedute finemente intagliate al bulino. Ereditando la tradizione di Antonio Lafrery nel pubblicare carte geografiche su richiesta, il Lauro viene in concorrenza con gli altri editori romani del periodo quali Claudio Duchetti e Giovanni Orlandi. La sua opera più importante rimane Antiqua Urbis Splendor, raccolta di 166 bulini sulle antichità romane. La più importante pianta della città. Magnificent work, printed on a single contemporary laid paper royal sheet, trimmer to platemark and in excellent condition. Splendid bird’s eye-view of the city, published as a separate issue in Rome in 1600. The plan is dedicated to Don Fernando de Castro, Count of Lemos and viceroy of the Reign of Naples; on the left part, it bears the Royal coat of arms of Spain and on the right the coat of arms of the city. In the centre, close to the dedication, there is the coat of arms of Pico Blas, who probably commissioned this work. Giacomo Lauro was cartographer, engraver and publisher; he worked in Rome between 1585 and 1612; Lauro realized several plans and views with the engraving technique. Driving his inspiration from Antonio Lafrery’s tradition on geographic maps, Lauro entered into competition with other Roman publishers of the time, such as Claudio Duchetti and Giovanni Orlandi. His most important work is Antiqua Urbis Splendor, a collection of 166 engravings on Roman antiquities. The most important plan of the city.
