Il testo è in italiano e in latino, incorniciato pagina per pagina in fregi xilografici, con anche le iniziali figurate e finalini. “I consoli dei comuni italiani giuravano, all'atto di assumere il potere, certi capitoli nei quali erano comprese da un lato regole riguardanti la condotta politica, dall'altro norme concernenti l'esercizio della giurisdizione. [...] Così a Venezia vediamo il doge giurare le "promissioni", delle quali la più celebre, quella che si mantenne sino alla caduta, è di natura politica; accanto però ad una riguardante la giurisdizione criminale. [...] La promissione ducale di natura politica contiene [...] una serie di promesse di governare e giudicare rettamente, di serbare il segreto sugli affari di stato, di eseguire le deliberazioni del consiglio e così via; ma, sin dalla prima che ci è conservata, cioè quella del doge Enrico Dandolo, del 1193, contiene pure una serie di restrizioni al potere ducale, come quella di non corrispondere direttamente col papa né con altri principi, di non intromettersi nella nomina del patriarca, di non disporre dei beni del comune, ecc.” (Treccani). Le promissioni sono cinque e seicentesche: la più recente fra tutte porta la data del 1656. L’insieme di queste regole, oltre a chiarire i precetti ducali, costituisce un interessante punto di vista su diversi aspetti della cultura e dell’economia veneziana in questi due secoli. Le indicazioni contenute sono infatti di vario genere e comprendono i campi più disparati, come per esempio l’abbigliamento, la vita coniugale e il nepotismo (negli anni si intensificano le regole per prevenire un esito di ereditarietà della carica ducale - che era notoriamente elettiva), i commerci, arredi e competenze urbanistiche, politiche monetarie, ecc. Questa copia non è conforme a quelle presenti nelle biblioteche italiane: manca la carta A1, come premesso, ma fuori segnatura ci sono pagine di testo non descritte nei cataloghi, e peraltro non numerate né indicizzate (l’indice si trova alla fine). Full vellum, leaf A1 missing. The text, in Italian and Latin, is framed at every page in xilographic ornaments. The “promissioni” were the collection of rules and laws that the Venetian Dukes had to swear on, when put in charge. The most recent of the “promissioni” here gathered is from 1656; this text, beyond the importance about Venice government, is an important and original point of view about many aspects of the venitian culture and economy. The directions include many fields, from the clothing to married life and nepotism (during these years the rules to prevent the heredity of Duke’s office are enhanced), commerce, furnitures, architecture, politics, money, etc. This copy is different from the ones preserved in Italian libraries: there are text pages off the signature and numbering, and not indexed (the index is in the final part of book).‎

‎15 1 blank pp.First bilingual Italian and Dutch edition of a sentence pronounced by the government of the Venetian Republic the Consiglio dei Dieci or Council of Ten on 21 April 1612 declaring Anzolo Badoer in absentia a traitor stripping him of his knighthood confiscating his property banishing him from the city and the Republic's territories and sentencing him to be hanged in the original Italian with a parallel Dutch translation. It also offers a reward for his capture dead or alive 4000 ducats if captured in the Republic and 6000 ducats if captured abroad. Anzolo or Angelo Badoer 1565- 1630 was the eldest son of Alberto Badoer 1540-1592 who had served as Venetian ambassador to Spain the Holy Roman Empire and Rome until his premature death. Anzolo succeeded to his father's knighthood and followed him into diplomatic service as Venetian ambassador to France from 1602 until he came into conflict with the Council of Ten in 1607.With a large "9" on the title-page in red pencil. ‎Original 19th Century photograph showing a venice canal with a bridge reflecting into the water and gondolas docked to the side. The photograph is very large measuring 10-1/2"x14" and mounted on heavy cardboard to an overall size of 14"x20". The Ponte dei Sospiri or "Bridge of Sighs which is the focal point of this photograph is an enclosed bridge passing over the Rio di Palazzo which connects the prison to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. The bridge got its name because the view through the narrow stone-barred windows was the last sight of Venice convicts got to see before being led to their imprisonment. Catalogue numbered in the lower left hand corner within the photo "9. Venezia/ Ponte dei Sospiri." Another image of the same size and condition is on the verso labeled within the photo "38. Venezia/Palazzo Ducale." Moderate staining and warping to cardboard but photograph itself is in fine condition. unknown books‎

FIRST EDITION. 18th century calf-backed marbled paper boards raised bands spine panels with gilt floral sprig black morocco label. Paragraph marks in red numerous three-line initials painted red one five-line initial painted red with floral decoration and gold highlights. With manuscript foliation both Arabic and Roman numerals and a few marginal notes in an early 16th century hand. Front pastedown with an armorial bookplate of Augustus Frederick Duke of Sussex about whom see below; front free endpaper with the bookplate of George W. Pratt and a purple stamp bearing the initials "GWP"; four smaller loose sheets of bibliographical notes by various modern hands laid in. Goff S-724; BMC V 219; Walsh 1662. Binding with significant general wear but entirely sound. Light marginal dampstain in the upper corner becoming slightly darker and extending the length of the margin on the last 20 or so leaves some uneven toning more than half the leaves quite bright but the rest a shade or two darker other minor imperfections in the text but still an appealing copy internally generally fresh and with extremely comfortable margins. This is an attractively rubricated copy of the first appearance of the first printed book on the laws and statutes of Venice as well as one of the first to include maritime law and customs in print. Given Venice's role as a commercial powerhouse and an early model of capitalism in the Medieval period this work is of obvious interest to the student of law and economics. At the time this work was printed Venice was one of the wealthiest cities in the world as well as one of the most populous in Europe by some estimates second only to Paris. With sea trade at the center of this wealthy and powerful Republic the section on maritime law here necessarily occupies a good portion of the text and includes a broad range of regulations pertaining to cargo and equipment payments and wages disputes between sailors abandonment by crew members arming ships and much more. We have not been able to decipher in full the notes in manuscript that appear after the primary text but a pencil note on the rear pastedown dated 1851 mentions that they are "more recent decrees" made into law after the book had been published. Pollard notes that our printer Filippo di Pietro active 1472-82 published about 40 works in his career after separating from his kinsman Gabriele in 1474 most of which were literary including editions of Aristotle Cicero and Dante. The present work comes with a very desirable provenance. Augustus Frederick Duke of Sussex 1773-1843 was the sixth son of George III and his wife Charlotte Sophia. He amassed a huge library containing "upward of fifty thousand volumes of Mss and printed books" according to the account of Thomas Joseph Pettigrew the Duke's librarian and surgeon!. In 1844 following the Duke's death the library was sold off in order to cover his considerable debts no doubt in part due to his penchant for book buying. The book later came to George W. Pratt 1830-62 an American senator Union Army officer and avid book collector with more than 8000 volumes in his library according to a contemporary account. He was the son of Zadock Pratt who built the largest tannery in the world including an entire town to operate it in the Catskill Mountain region. This copy is recorded in the ISTC as one of only five in the US also Harvard Yale LC and the Morgan. It also appears to be extremely rare on the market--we could not find a single auction record on either RBH or ABPC. Filippo di Pietro unknown‎
