br. Al tempo della nascita di Cristo, l'Europa era contrassegnata da uno straordinario contrasto. Da poco unificato sotto la dominazione imperiale di Roma, il Mediterraneo era sede di una civiltà politicamente evoluta, economicamente avanzata e culturalmente raffinata. Il resto dell'Europa era popolato da agricoltori con un'economia a livello di sussistenza, organizzati in entità politiche di piccole dimensioni. Più si procedeva verso est, più rarefatto si faceva il paesaggio: meno utensili di ferro, meno produttività nell'agricoltura e minore densità della popolazione. Mille anni più tardi troviamo un mondo completamente cambiato. Non solo i gruppi di lingua slava si sono sostituiti a quelli di lingua germanica, ma, cosa ancora più importante, il Mediterraneo ha perduto la sua centralità. A livello politico la causa va ricercata nel progressivo affermarsi nel Nord di entità statuali più grandi e solide. Tuttavia verso il Mille erano anche molti tratti culturali caratteristici del Mediterraneo a diffondersi al Nord e all'Est. In sostanza le diverse forme di organizzazione umana si sviluppavano verso un maggiore grado di omogeneità lungo una direttrice che interessava l'intera fascia continentale dell'Europa. L'impero e i barbari. Le grandi migrazioni e la nascita dell'Europa
ill., ril. Al tempo della nascita di Cristo, l'Europa era contrassegnata da uno straordinario contrasto. Da poco unificato sotto la dominazione imperiale di Roma, il Mediterraneo era sede di una civiltà politicamente evoluta, economicamente avanzata e culturalmente raffinata. Il resto dell'Europa era popolato da agricoltori con un'economia a livello di sussistenza, organizzati in entità politiche di piccole dimensioni. Più si procedeva verso est, più rarefatto si faceva il paesaggio: meno utensili di ferro, meno produttività nell'agricoltura e minore densità della popolazione. Mille anni più tardi troviamo un mondo completamente cambiato. Non solo i gruppi di lingua slava si sono sostituiti a quelli di lingua germanica, ma, cosa ancora più importante, il Mediterraneo ha perduto la sua centralità. A livello politico la causa va ricercata nel progressivo affermarsi nel Nord di entità statuali più grandi e solide. Tuttavia verso il Mille erano anche molti tratti culturali caratteristici del Mediterraneo a diffondersi al Nord e all'Est. In sostanza le diverse forme di organizzazione umana si sviluppavano verso un maggiore grado di omogeneità lungo una direttrice che interessava l'intera fascia continentale dell'Europa. Furono queste nuove strutture, politiche e culturali, a rompere definitivamente l'antico ordine mondiale fondato sul dominio del Mediterraneo.
