Bulino, 1595, sulla colonna “ROM A1595 23 septeb”, in basso sedici versi in tedesco distribuiti su quattro colonne “Als Kung Heinrich von Naverr…”.Ottimo esemplare, impresso su carta vergata coeva, ampi margini bianchi.Rara incisione che raffigura, come esplicitato dalla didascalia in tedesco, le varie fasi della fastosa cerimonia di assoluzione e benedizione di Enrico di Navarra, che si svolse il 17 settembre 1595, presieduta da papa Clemente VIII.In quanto eretico e di fede calvinista, Enrico era stato scomunicato da papa Sisto V e dichiarato inabile a regnare sin dal 1585. Salito al trono di Francia nel 1589, Enrico fu costretto ad abiurare pubblicamente il calvinismo il 23 luglio 1593, e dopo una lunga trattativa diplomatica, papa Clemente VIII decise per la sua assoluzione e la benedizione.Sull’incisione è riportata la data 23 settembre 1595, e non 17 com’è registrato sui documenti ufficiali. Forse l’errore si deve ad una confusione proprio con la data dell’abiura pubblica, sopra citata. Di notevole interesse sotto il profilo storico-religioso. Engraving, 1595, lettered on the column “ROM A1595 23 septeb”, lettered within image with captions detailing place and protagonists. Further lettered with sixteen lines of German verse in four columns in lower margin: 'Als Kunig Heinrich Von Nauerr,.../...Die Engelburch Und gschutz nit Saumn.'Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, wide margins, in excellent condition.Rare engraving depicting, as explained by the caption in German, the various stages of the magnificent ceremony of absolution and blessing of Henry of Navarre, which took place September 17, 1595, presided over by Pope Clement VIII. As a heretic and Calvinist faith, Henry had been excommunicated by Pope Sixtus V and declared unfit to rule since 1585. Ascended to the throne of France in 1589, Henry was forced to publicly recant Calvinism July 23, 1593, and after a long diplomatic negotiations, Pope Clement VIII decided for his absolution and blessing. The engraving bears the date September 23, 1595, and not 17 as recorded on official documents. Perhaps the error is due to a confusion with the date of its public abjuration, cited above.
