Epic and Empire: Politics and Generic Form from Virgil to Milton
8vo, br. ed. 433pp. Alexander the Great, according to Plutarch, carried on his campaigns a copy of the Iliad, kept alongside a dagger; on a more pronounced ideological level, ancient Romans looked to the Aeneid as an argument for imperialism. In this major reinterpretation of epic poetry beginning with Virgil, David Quint explores the political context and meanings of key works in Western literature. He divides the history of the genre into two political traditions: the Virgilian epics of conquest and empire that take the victors' side (the Aeneid itself, Camoes's Lusíadas, Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata) and the countervailing epic of the defeated and of republican liberty (Lucan's Pharsalia, Ercilla's Araucana, and d'Aubigné's Les tragiques). These traditions produce opposing ideas of historical narrative: a linear, teleological narrative that belongs to the imperial conquerors, and an episodic and open-ended narrative identified with "romance," the story told of and by the defeated. Quint situates Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained within these rival traditions. He extends his political analysis to the scholarly revival of medieval epic in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and to Sergei Eisenstein's epic film, Alexander Nevsky. Attending both to the topical contexts of individual poems and to the larger historical development of the epic genre, Epic and Empire provides new models for exploring the relationship between ideology and literary form. David Quint is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Yale University. Titolo manoscritto al dorso e al piatto anteriore. -cc. 8nn., cc.198, c. 1 nn., cc.54 + c.1nn. con l'errata. Registro e al verso la stessa marca tipografica del frontis. Carattere romano, 42 linee, varie parole in greco, capilettera figurati. Edizione originale, curata dal J. Sichardus, veramente rara, di grande bellezza tipografica e ben completa delle due parti con in fine 19 capitoli delle "Declamationes" che pur non essendo di Quintiliano, sono state conservate sotto il suo nome. Dopo l'editio princeps del 1470 in Roma per cura di Joan. Antonii Campani, questo celebre trattato di retorica ebbe molte pubblicazioni e recensioni; è una delle più eccellenti opere che possediamo dell' antichità romana. Le vicende dei Tà meth'Hómeron, il "seguito" dell'Iliade, erano state la materia, in età arcaica, del cosiddetto "ciclo epico", una serie di poemi che narravano il mito troiano dagli antefatti fino ai discendenti dei grandi protagonisti della guerra. Tali poemi, probabilmente, non si leggevano più già ai tempi di Quinto di Smirne. Egli volle così colmare una lacuna, prendendo Omero a maestro dal punto di vista della lingua e dello stile. Ma lo spirito di un'epoca diversa non poteva non penetrare nella sua opera. I personaggi, più drammatici e psicologicamente delineati, si mostrano al lettore nelle loro passioni e nei loro dubbi, nell'odio e nell'amore, e soprattutto nelle loro coscienze: dall'infelice amazzone Pentesilea al gigante etiope Memnone, dall'Aiace impazzito al temerario Euripilo, dal violento Neottolemo alla passionale Enone. Un'epica tradizionale ma diversa, affascinante per molti versi: l'unico poema antico rimastoci che narri questa sezione del mito, e che è stato a lungo ingiustamente dimenticato. An interesting account on the olders Members' Club in london founded in circa 1799. this book traces its growth and changes through the generations of its existence showing its development toa happy and highly individual club. Illustrated with frontispiece and thirty one plates. Collated complete. In the original unclipped dustwrapper. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally excellent with only minor shelf wear. Inscribed by a previous owner to the front free endpaper. The dustwrapper is very smart with only slight shelf wear and some sunning to the spine and edges of the wraps. Unclipped. Internally firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Brossura originale con titolo alla copertina in cornice tipografica una gora alla copertina e piccola mancanza a un angolo qualche ingiallitura. Causa tra il Comune di Roma e il principe Borghese che dopo aver a lungo consentito che la popolazione passeggiasse nei giardini della villa e che qui si tenessero caroselli equestri all'improvviso nel maggio 1885 negò questo diritto acquisito. Da qui la causa persa dal principe. Importante e non comune. Battisti unknown

IL TESTO si trova in un corposo stralcio di circa 100 pagine dai Transunti degli Atti della R. Accademia dei Lincei, 1883. Il testo sul PALAZZO e la BIBLIOTECA CORSINI occup 70 pagine (da p. 330 a p. 369) del fascicolo in-4° (cm. 30x22). Fascicolo editoriale privo del piatto anteriore e con piatto posteriore lacero e gualcito, interno buono nelle sue barbe, in parte sciolto o allentato, ma immacolato. Storia del Palazzo fino alla sua assegnazione ai Lincei e modalità della stessa. L'INVENTARIO dei mobili (323 oggetti) occupa 6 fittissime pagine. L'elenco dei QUADRI e oggetti occupa 16 fittissme pagine. A quel tempo il Presidente dell'Accademia dei Lincei era Quintino SELLA. Lo stralcio contiene anche resoconti di sedute, elenchi di e contenuti di opere e schemi di osservazioni meteo. Esemplare da studio da rilegare.
