‎EMIGRATION FROM ITALY IN THE REPUBLICAN AGE OF ROME‎

‎Ex-library copy with one single institution stamp to title-page and pocket with discard stamp to endpage. Minor fading to spine. ; 208 pages; During the last two centuries of the Roman Republic emigration from Italy to the provinces was widespread and increasing. This book is the first to survey the movement throughout the Empire; the emphasis is on private rather than state-organised settlement. The first part is about the Western Mediterranean provinces, whose Romanization began in this period; the second part treats emigration to the Greek East, where, by contrast, the settlers tended to become more and more hellenized. The principal matters considered are the volume of emigration, the kinds of communities formed overseas by the emigrants, their motives and origins, the regions and places settled, the fortunes of the settlers in the upheavals of the late Republican period, and their relations with the people among whom they lived.‎

Rare panorama of the city edited by the heirs of Jeremias Wollf in Augsburg.  The print, accompanied by a 17-item key-legend, shows numerous characters and animals in the foreground.  The Tiber follows the wrong course typical of all city views of Nordic production, but in this engraving the buildings are drawn in a much more realistic way and correspond to reality. The initial prototype for this type of panorama can be identified in the general view engraved by Israel SIlvestre in 1642. Copper engraving, contemporary coloring, in very good condition. 105.‎

‎Summary The exhibition catalogue for When Coinage Was Born - Treasures from the Zhuyuetang Collection (held at the Royal Spanish Mint from June 2025 through June 2026) showcases 148 coins illustrating the development of early coinage around the Mediterranean Sea. The many spectacular coins of the Zhuyuetang Collection provide a deep dive into the wonderful world of Archaic Greek numismatic imagery, so different from the aesthetic language of later Hellenistic and Roman coins, and a vivid tableau of monsters, gods, heroes, and animals. More than a mere assortment of metal objects, these coins tell stories from 2500 years ago about war and international conflict, natural disasters, communities, religion, wealth, and much more. Printed in full color with over 180 images and text masterfully researched and written by two of the leading scholars in Archaic Greek numismatics.
