In-8°, mm 140x100, cc. (16), 320. Legatura coeva in pergamena rigida con titoli manoscritti al dorso. Marca tipografica al frontespizio. Qualche segno d'usura al piede del dorso, leggera rifilatura del margine superiore che non lede il testo. Firma antica al frontespizio. Nell'insieme una buona copia di questa terza edizione volgare dell'opera di Valerio Massimo nella traduzione dell'umanista Giorgio Dati.

In 2° (30,7x21,3 cm); (12), 246 cc. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida con titolo manoscritto al dorso. Mancanze alla pergamena. Note cinquecentesche manoscritte al recto del piatto anteriore. Prima rara edizione rara, nessun esemplare censito in ICCU, stampata a Venezia da Francesco Bindoni e Maffeo Pasini. Una piccolo nota manoscritta la margine bianco basso e del frontespizio e allo stesso, una leggerissima gora all'angolo basso esterno, praticamente invisibile. Marca tipografica al frontespizio che si ripete anche all'ultima pagina con angelo che tiene per mani un bambino e un cane ai suoi piedi. Numerose iniziali xilografiche. Un sottile ed insignificante tunnel di tarlo all'angolo alto di una decina di carte, sempre lontano da testo e praticamente ininfluente e nel complesso, all'interno in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Nel 1547 uscì un'edizione dell'opera, simile a questa, sempre a Venezia, a cura di Venturino Ruffinelli. L'opera presenta i commenti di alcuni celebri umanisti come Aldo Pio Manuzio, Ascensius Jodocus Badius, Chalcondylas Teofilo. Rarissima edizione di questo celebre scritto del grande storico romano Valerio Massimo (Roma, I secolo a.C. - Roma, post 31). Dopo aver accompagnato nel suo proconsolato in Asia il suo protettore Sesto Pompeo, Valerio Massimo scrisse un manuale di esempi retorico-morali Factorum et dictorum memorabilium libri IX [noto anche con il titolo di Moralium exemplorum]. Opera erudita di carattere divulgativo, raccoglieva fatti e aneddoti ripresi da fonti diverse (tra le quali Cicerone, Tito Livio, Varrone e, fra i greci, Erodoto e Senofonte in particolare), suddivisi in 9 libri (un ipotetico decimo libro potrebbe essere andato perduto) e 95 categorie di vizi e virtù, al loro interno suddivisi in romani ed esterni. Tratti per la maggior parte dalla storia romana e, in misura minore, da quella greca, gli aneddoti hanno un carattere moraleggiante. La modesta finalità dell'autore è infatti quella di portare al lettore exempla (esempi) attraverso i comportamenti virtuosi (oppure tramite quelli più sleali) dei grandi uomini del passato, di modo che i retori, a cui questa opera sembra essere indirizzata, potessero farne uso nei loro discorsi per dare peso alle loro argomentazioni. L'opera di questo autore si propone anche di essere un'edificante e piacevole lettura per il lettore occasionale, non necessariamente colto nell'arte della retorica. Valerio Massimo fu più volte usato e citato dagli autori latini successivi. Nel IV secolo dalla sua opera furono tratti due compendi; uno, che ci è giunto integralmente, di Giulio Paride, l'altro, che si arresta al III libro, di Nepoziano (Januarius Nepotianus).". Come scrive l'Encyclopedia Britannica 1911: "direct and simple statement is eschewed and novelty pursued at any price. The barrier between the diction of poetry and that of prose is broken down; the uses of words are strained; monstrous metaphors are invented; there are startling contrasts, dark innuendoes and highly coloured epithets; the most unnatural variations are played upon the artificial scale of grammatical and rhetorical figures of speech. Valerius Maximus was a widely read Roman author, but little is known of his life. This work, [Nine Books of Memorable Deeds and Sayings] was written around A.D. 30 and is a miscellany of anecdotes about a variety of subjects. It was especially important as a source for writers and orators. The Dutch family of Elzevier (Elzevir; Elsevier) were the foremost printers of their time. They produced a vast variety of well printed scholarly and popular books; many in a very small handy format. Louis Elzevier, the founder of the firm, produced his first book in Leiden in 1583.
