La battaglia di Canne. Il trionfo di Annibale
16mo. br., pp. 288, cm 13,5x20. (Oscar Storia. 552). Il 2 agosto 216 a.C. è la data più funesta nella storia della Roma repubblicana. L'esercito romano, guidato dai due consoli Lucio Emilio Paolo e Gaio Terenzio Varrone, si scontrò con quello cartaginese, comandato da Annibale, nella sanguinosa battaglia di Canne, uno dei fatti d'armi più famosi nella storia. Fu una catastrofe militare senza precedenti, le cui dimensioni, dopo ventidue secoli, non finiscono di stupire e sgomentare: secondo molti storia, il numero delle vittime fu pari a quello provocato dalle bombe atomiche di Hiroshima e Nagasaki, ma alcuni studiosi sostengono che fu molto più alto. Eppure a Canne non c'erano armi da fuoco, nessun grosso calibro di artiglieria e, naturalmente, non c'erano gli aerei. Si combattè con dardi, pietre e giavellotti, armi bianche e primitive, zoccoli di cavalli, calci e morsi. L'esercito di Annibale riuscì a neutralizzare e ad annientare la potente macchina militare romana, dando ai suoi avversari uno scacco matto in tre mosse: sgominando la cavalleria, facendo flettere al centro le proprie fanterie, accerchiando il nemico. Quella di Canne è la battaglia più studiata dai generali e dagli esperti di storia militare perché rappresenta lo scontro campale per eccellenza, l'apoteosi della scaltrezza e della duttilità di manovra di un esercito in guerra e il suo fascino grandioso e sinistro continua ancora oggi a suscitare interesse nei lettori.

La congiura di Catilina
br. La congiura di Catilina, la rivolta che nell'autunno del 63 a.C. avrebbe dovuto decapitare i vertici della Repubblica romana, si è imposta nei secoli come «la madre di tutte le congiure». Raccontato e studiato, quell'episodio pone ancora molte domande. Bocchiola e Sartori tentano di rispondere, individuando una chiave di lettura - la crisi delle istituzioni repubblicane - che riunisce tutti i protagonisti dell'epoca, tra i più grandi uomini di Roma: Cicerone, Cesare, Pompeo, Crasso, Catone.
